Phew. A hard book to read but super important. I have to admit, it got overwhelming at times and sometimes I felt close to crying at how cruel people (in this case men specifically) can get. But still it was very informative and I recommend it.

dobelli has some good points (news focuses often on the bad and sensational) but the way he frames everything and makes an idiot out of everyone who doesn't follow his news-free lifestyle is just making me not want to listen to Anything he says, even if it is one of the better points

then some screaming at clouds about celebrities being people who don't deserve it instead of inventors, casually dropping the alpha male ideology of women choosing higher status partner... if a book on the same topic with similar points was written by someone else, maybe it would've worked. i was hoping to find out something about the psychology of news, the inner workings of the journals headquarters or some studies backing up what he says. guess im gonna have to find that somewhere else
Richarda Osmana mám ráda, ale myslím, že psaní není jeho forte.
Premisa zní super - vyšetřovateli na vlastní pěst je banda důchodců, celkem originální, jedem! Až na to, že spíš ne.
Mezi klady patří humor, je vidět, že Osman není přidružený ke sféře britské komedie jen tak. A co se postav týče, přišly mě zajímavé holmesovská Elizabeth a Joyce jakožto babička žijící svůj sen, být součástí detektivky.
Za mě bohužel ale knížka jako detektivka absolutně propadla. Na to, že detektivní příbě má být primárním tahounem, mě vyšetřovací linka absolutně nezajímala, neorientovala jsem se v ní, ani v přehršli postav (proč by mě měl zajímat Donny ex?), které kromě zmíněných dvou žen byly poměrně ploché a nezapamatovatelné.
Za co bych ještě dala plus bylo přepínání mezi všudypřítomným vypravěčem a Joycinými deníkovými zápisky, přičemž to druhé mělo větší náboj a bylo příjemným zpestřením narativy, která byla jinak nic moc.
Další knihy ze série zůstanou mnou nedotčené a s Richardem se uvidíme při sledování Pointless.
Nádherná kniha, pokud máte rádi Dívka, žena, jiné od Bernardine Evaristo, tohle je knížka pro vás. Má podobnou strukturu, vypráví příběh rodiny během několika generací a dekád, soustředí se na téma identity a rasy. Příběh plyne naprosto skvěle, postavy jsou úžasně vykreslené a nejsou ploché, dává čtenáři prostor sympatizovat i s lidmi, kteří se chovají nepříjemě. Moc mě potěšila nečekaná queer reprezentace - čtenářstvo, pro které je to důležité, potěší, kdo queer postavy nevyhledává si nebude mít důvod stěžovat, že by to tam bylo nějak moc v popředí, protože není. Mně to udělalo vážně radost. Vážně doporučuji ♥
The story is pretty scattered and I wasn't sure what and who to pay attention to.
The tension/mystery aspect felt super inconsistent. There was a “countdown” dowards someone dying and then we find out it was the asshole who made like a single appearance being abusive. Not really a shocker and not a pity. Phoebe as a POV character was absolutely forgettable to me. But. I love Knox. I love Maeve and I cared about their storylines a lot. I liked the cameos by the heroes from the first book. And it all came together in the end. And somehow it still managed to keep me glued to the pages and elicit feels in me. So 4*

I don't really know what to make of this book. It was kind of shallow and repetitive. The reviews say it's funny - I have no idea where.
The only interesting part was when the protagonist started doing things during her blackout, I thought that would also lead somewhere but nope. And the backstory into her miserable childhood and parents was also intriguing.
Didn't really get the ending either. Dunno, maybe just not a book for me. So far I've read 2 contemporary super popular books and I didn't like either

I've heard really good things about this book. And it was charming in it's own way, had a little of that found family trope that I love. But I was also struggling to finish it, which given the length, is telling. Maybe I would've liked it more if I liked maths.
3.5* sigh, I guess I expected more. The messages in this book are overall useful, but not really that mind blowing or original especially when you've read one or two self help books before - things like “only you can help yourself improve” “don't take on responsibilities of others” “live in the moment” and “only you are truly responsible for your emotions.” There's some good advice that's well phrased and the format of a dialogue is an interesting change from other help books.
However. Some of the concepts are a bit whack in the oversimplification. Such as “a kid will only harm themselves for their parents attention.” That's a really bad example to explain a concept that otherwise could be persuasive. Then there's the whole questionable punch they give you right at the beginning of “there's no such thing as trauma.” Like, I can agree with what they further say - your trauma does not define you or determine your future indefinitely. But to say that the influence is dismissable and that “we do not suffer from trauma but only make out of them whatever suits our purposes” is a bit of a harsh stretch. I'm not one bit surprised that people are giving this book 1* ratings and saying it's just victim blaming bs because if I were at the beginning of my recovery and read this, I would feel the same way. So don't read this as your first self help book.
Tldr - some good points but there are books out there that sell them better.

Co se psaní týče, tahle knížka je nanejvýš průměrná. Ale ty témata, co nese, uf. Už jsem toho o feminismu načetla mraky, ale prostě zase jsem u týhletý knížky řvala. Celou dobu jsem přemýšlela nad třema hvězdičkama, třema a půl, ale ten konec mě rozsekal, takže čtyři.
Jsem moc ráda, že i v YA příbehu o feminismu se mluví o intersekcionalitě, ale pořád jenom okrajově, přitom tam figuruje dost rozmanitých postav (a ve filmové adaptaci je tohle ještě posíleno o holku na vozíčku a trans holčinu ♥), možná kdyby bylo pár kapitol z pohledu ostatních, dobře by to podtrhlo rozmanitost oblastí, které může feminismus řešit.
Love interest hlavní postavy je takovej nemastnej neslanej, stejně tak samotná “romance”, ale slouží dobře k zobrazení toho, že být ally neznamená, že všechno dokonale chápete.
Ještě v kontrastu s filmem, kterej toho dost vynechal, jsem si uvědomila, co všechno je v knížce přítomný - ženská* solidarita, intersekcionalismus, chyby v systému, zpochybňování výpovědí obětí sexuálního násilí, navazování na práci předchozích generací feministek a zároveň zanechávání lepšího světa pro lidi, co přijdou po vás, různý způsoby protestu, ať už přímý a hlasitý nebo tišší a nenápadnější, každej po svym.
Pokud feminismus není vaše láska a hobby, klidně vynechte, ale pokud jo, tak Moxie doporučuju.

První polovina skvělá. Christopherova máma, šerif, Ambrose - super. Stephen King vibes. Od části V dál se to neskutečně táhlo a opakovalo, ztratilo to jakýkoliv momentum a tak minimálně 200 stránek se dalo proškrtat. Konec celkem meh.
Naprosto povinná četba s tématikou BLM a vhled do života velké části černošských obyvatel USA. Kromě hlavního tématu policejní brutality zvládla knížka pokrýt i mnoho dalších témat spojených s rasou a mě osobně to nakoplo vyhledávat více podobných příběhu a zajímat se víc o Černou historii.
Please, everyone regardless of gender, read this. It will make you mad at times but it's such an important book.
I don't understand why is this so popular. The main characters are super unlikable and flat, side characters just blend into each other as none of them have a personality (except for Lorraine, I actually liked her). I understand the stylistic and perhaps somehow symbolic choice of not using quotation marks but it makes the book just hard to read and it wasn't good enough for that to be justifiable in my opinion. If it was supposed to be about relationship between the two heroes and how they get together and then leave and then get together again - I simply couldn't care less about them or their relationship. Plus the long bland descriptions of the most mundane actions... Boring and not worth your time
An excellent YA mystery with great characters? It's more likely than you think!This was so good. First things first, great and belieavable mystery with layers.Really well done pacing that moves along well but also always keeps some mystery to keep the reader engaged, even when you think it's all over.And now the main reason I love this book - the characters and the writing. The protagonist is likeable, she's nerdy and always on top of her schoolwork, but is not the stereotypical outcast bookworm #notlikeothergirls, she's funny and chatty and has friends that she goes camping with. I also appreciate Pip's dad, who was just so endearing and after reading two books portraying broken and abusive families, reading about Pip's family was refreshing. None of the characters were flat, everyone had their distinct personality and nuances and I appreaciate that. I feel like a quote from Pip sums it up perfectly: And though the story has its monsters, I've found that it is not one that can be so easily cleaved into the good and the bad. In the end, this was a story about people and their different shades of desperation crashing up against each other.Lastly, it was just so well written, some pieces of the dialogue just felt exactly like something I could hear myself or my friends say, like “I know it's not enviromentaly friendly, but I always wanted to put up a murder board.” Plus other lowkey mentions of issues the current youth gives a damn about just made it feel real.I'd definitely recommend this, especially if you liked for example [b:One of Us Is Lying 58679358 One of Us Is Lying (One of Us is Lying, #1) Karen M. I am not the target audience. This is more for people who see the word “feminism” and scream and run.
The “essays” ranged from anecdotes related to the female experience, but didn't really touch on feminism itself (Kat Dennings) to deeper analyses of the fear of feminism (Alison Sudol). I think it was the word “essay” that lead me to expect a more consistent mix of writings - like everybody writing what feminism meant to them personally or how they got involved with feminism etc. But after a weak start (sorry Evanna Lynch, but seeing JKR mentioned as a feminist rolemodel in 2022 is pretty yikes) there are some cool segments. Uuuf. Tohle není dobrá kniha.
Jediná postava není sympatická, snad kromě Adama, se kterým jsem musela soucítit že má všeho dost a občas sestry Emy. Nejlepší kamarádka je naprosto protivná a nerespektuje, že Viktorie nechce trajdat po rande (a pak se “obává o její orientaci” (55))
S hlavní postavou je hrozně těžký soucítit - možná ze začátku to jde, ale když vlastně celou knihu nedojde k posunu a čtenářstvo jenom sleduje, jak všechny od sebe odstrkuje, tak je to sice realistický, ale jako knižní zážitek maximálně frustrující. Její vnitřní pochody se v podstatě také jenom opakují. Taky mi přišlo trochu cringe jak její jediná charakteristika kromě jejich problémů bylo, že je #notlikeothergirls tim nejvíc stereotypním způsobem a i Adam říká že proto se mu líbí. Yikes. Vztah s Adamem jde z 0 (“nikdy mě kluci nezajímali fuj nechci na rande”) na 100 (“ale on je krásnej a skvělej”). A taky je v knize naznačeno že láska vás vyléčí z depresí (“Od té doby co jsem zamilovaná zmizely i deprese” (82) “Milovala jsem intenzivně. Ta láska mě léčila.” (186)) což prostě není pravda.
Černooká figurující v názvu hraje v příběhu důležitou roli hlavně v přibližné poslední čtvrtině. Dialogy působí hrozně nepřirozeně, jak mezi teenagery, tak z úst doktorstva. Největší bizar formulace bylo “Jako kůň ve stáji stojím ve sprchovém koutě” (43). Ty dvě hvězdičky jsou za to, že místy je vyzobrazeni deprese přesný (špatný spánek, málo energie, všechno se zdá k ničemu, pocit viny), ale repetitivnost, špatně postavy a podprůměrné psaní a pár dalších problematických věcí prostě na víc nedosáhnou. Hledání po dobrým českým autorstvu pokračuje.
Příběh i postavy jsou pěkné, ale bohužel asi nebudu patřit k těm, kteří jsou světem Pratchetta naprosto nadšení a fascinováni
