I had fun with this book. My difficulty was the end. I loved the inclusivity in this story. It doesn't feel forced and no one is a token character by any means.
Just that last quarter of the book I really struggled. I'm still going to read the sequel and I am interested in seeing what else Gailey writes.
This was such a good book! I loved the shifting POVs and the slow reveals. This is a book about a hidden community - and the dangers it faces when it is threatened by outsiders.
I only wished that we got more of a why for how certain things happened and the more immediate history of Pastoral.
This book was messy. It was messy in the way that you felt a knot tighten in your chest just hoping for someone, anyone, to step in and help these characters. I had been looking for a book that I could devour and Ancrum delivered.
I was really worried that this book was going to be a long drawn out queerbait. Instead it was about neglect on multiple levels from those who should've shown up for Jack and August. It was about neglect even within their own relationship because of the weight that both boys had to carry.
It did end up feeling more like a journal with the added touches of the mixtapes, notes, and detention slips.
If any of this book interested in I would say just try it out. It did not leave me disappointed.
This book is on my personal hall of fame shelf now because it emcompasses grief in a way I could just feel it ache in my chest.
A fun read but after simmering on it I realized just how much I lacked a connection to Quincy.
Death lurks around every corner in this unforgettable Jewish historical fantasy about a city, a boy, and the shadows of the past that bind them both together.
What an absolute delight of a book.
Set with the backdrop of the Chicago World Fair Polydoros gives us queer horror in such a fantastic way. Besides the horror of having his body taken over by his friends dybbuk - Alter is also having to face the trauma of his own past to discover how to save his future.
The main cast of characters are so great and have such a great dynamic with one another. I can't wait to see what else Polydoros does!
This felt like what a downwards spiral feels like. Gilda is a lesbian who while looking for help ends up at a catholic church and doesn't say no when they mistake her as the new hire.
Gilda is often ruminating about death and that life feels like it could be cut short at any moment. There were parts that felt like disassociating. Just simply existing but I'm a total daze.
This book is so special. It's soft and full of heart. It's full of love and growing friendships. It's about finding your family in more than one way. When Casey tweeted about a queer Kate & Leopold I was on board. I fully intend to read [b:Red, White & Royal Blue 41150487 Red, White & Royal Blue Casey McQuiston https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1566742512l/41150487.SY75.jpg 61657690] but when I got approved for an arc by St. Martin's Press (thank you!) it became one of the books I wanted to prioritize reading. Reading this book I finished it feeling so comforted and my heart is so full. _________initial reaction at book announcement:okay but 1. the age range of the characters I AM HERE FOR IT 2. A BUTCH CHARACTER MY HEART SIMPLY CANNOT TAKE ITcasey I am just not prepared
This book took me so long to finish for whatever reason and I still really enjoyed it! Certain Dark Things is an interesting take of vampires. I really wasn't a fan of the romance in this book but did enjoy the wild ride of an adventure that we were taken on.
Thanks so much for providing me with an arc Tor!
I will probably simmer on this book and come back with some more coherent thoughts but right off the bat I do have this to say.
1. I flew through this book. Ward wrote in such a way that had me wanting to stay up way too late to finish.
2. The twist was... lackluster for me. Even if it went on the track that I was expecting it would still be completely unexpected and feel fresh. Possibly being shelved in my brain as one of those weird books. Instead it went more towards traditional tropes when it comes to thrillers. I know we can't reinvent the wheel HOWEVER it feels like a cope out to use the 'it's all in their head' trope.
You know what you are getting into when you read this book but it doesn't make the experience any better! It was so well written but I hated being in Celeste's mind!!
Thank you to Stelliform Press & Netgalley for an arc for an unbiased review.
Kern tells the story of Noah Mishner who finds shelter after a major hurricane within the walls of the Dallas Mavericks' basketball area. Noah starts seeing visions of his absent grandfather, Abe, who had fled Nazi Germany as a boy. All the while he is just trying to survive in a micro-community full of the same aggressors before the hurricane happened. This tiny novella packs such a punch. There were a few anxiety inducing moments but as someone new to the horror genre I feel like it was something I could handle. Within only 70 pages I found myself about to cry more than once. I devoured this in a single sitting and can't wait until I can go back and highlight the passages that really sunk in for me.
I have been waiting to read this book ever since I had first heard about it. I was drawn in by 1950s gothic horror with a debutante sent to see that her cousin is well after receiving an alarming letter.
I managed to get my pre-order days early and it only felt appropriate for how badly I had wanted to read this to drop everything else and visit High Place. THIS IS NOT YA!!!!
Mexican Gothic is a slow build up to the nightmare. Noemí is a dynamic heroine who enjoys parties, fancy cigarettes, anthropology, and is filled with so much determination to get what she wants. The way Moreno-Garcia crafted this story I felt like I was able to watch it unfold before my eyes. Halfway through I already felt as though it was just made to be adapted. This story takes classic gothic horror and gives it a far more interesting backdrop than the English countryside.
I do not want to give much away but this is a story that you just sit back and embrace the ride that you're being taken on.
This book is heavy with trigger warnings so please check them out before proceeding. CW: murder, epidemic, incest, attempted rape, cannibalism, racism, eugenics, hallucinations, gore.
