Can't say I enjoyed it. The plot gets more implausible as it progresses.
I had to finish it to see how it ended - not worth the effort.
I've read most of this series, but it came to a point where I could no longer stand the main character - Jon Santon. I could not finish the book. On the surface he should have everything going for him, but he seems to do everything he can to to screw it up.
I kept wishing for the guy to get a break, but, no it ain't happening.
To depressing to finish.
One dimensional characters. Predictable, repetitive plot scenarios with stupid action and violence.
Quite good fun, but Jack Widow is a Reacher clone. The writing is getting better, but needs better editing
The problem I have with these books is that when I read Jack Widow I hear Jack Reacher.
Well, I finally finished this on the second attempt. Not sure what originally put me off, but eventually I enjoyed the story. Don't think it's one of Reynold's best books, but, hey, it was OK.
As usual, from Alastair Reynolds, some great ideas. However I thought the ending was a bit confused, with several unresolved questions. I can't say what they are without spoilers.
I didn't enjoy this book much - I guess it's a score of 2.5. I can't quite put my finger on what has put me off it; other folk have enjoyed it immensely. I found the writing style somewhat old fashioned and cumbersome, and the dialogue stilted. It is a space opera but it put me in mind of 1950's space opera. The plot was okay but I did not engage with any of the main characters
This is one of my favourite books. Every few years I reread it and usually find something that I previously missed.
My rating was a 2.5.
Overall, I was disappointed in the trilogy of books, of which this is the third. It started well in the first book, but went downhill with the second and third volumes.
Yama's ongoing mission to find his origin, was in my view, tedious. I really had to force myself to finish the book, and when the culmination was reached it was pedestrian and somewhat predictable.
I'll try some of the authors other books which I hear are better.
An excellent story. Deceit, lies, betrayal, love, murder;it's got it all. Very well written with great characters.
I had not realised that this was a third of a trilogy, but it was a freebie so I read it anyway. An odd little book, but quite entertaining.
Perhaps the best book I have read this year. There is a strange and complex beauty to the writing of this book, where the reader is dropped into a maelstrom of events that are initially confusing. Just go with the flow and enjoy the strange culture, characters, and exotic technology that populate this universe.
I really wanted to like this book a lot. Started well, ended interestingly, but the middle of the book was basically boring. Pages of introspection and mental self flaggelation by all of the main characters. Hard work. I have book two lined up, but I need a bit of a rest first.
