the person who said this was a mystery - when i find you.............
/j but seriously, wtf
I mean, sure, it kind of was, but what a messed up story - skipped to the last chapter, didn't make sense, found a summary on reddit and was deeply disturbed
idk which was worse, this or neon gods

actually, it was pretty good...I think at the time I was tired of the indecisions
re-reading that last chapter may not have been the best idea at 3 AM..[SPOILER] my heart hurts for Maven :(
Hmm...it definitely left some loose ends that were kinda ¿¿¿ but the ending works
Upon the rereading, I realized that maybe [SPOILER] Maven shifting his weight onto Mare's collarbone wasn't entirely a mistake on his part.....I think it was deliberate.... Man....I dunno
mild spoiler
I wish there could've been some redemption for Maven, but - at the same time - his character was written beautifully as it was
:(
Before reading the sequel: um...
This book was....surprisingly very good ? ... !I think I was hesitant because I found “Flame in the Mist” to be well written but (imo) the sequel was slightly disappointing....I think the author did a better job of character and story development in this one. I really liked Khalid - the Caliph was fascinatingly complicated...and I liked that he was accepting of his faults without seeking to justify his mistakes. It takes a certain strength/courage, and discipline to be able to face yourself, face your mistakes, and still have hope that you can be better. I'm not sure if it's me or the fact that I read the book in one sitting (and was reading kinda slow lol) but at times I found the suspense to be unnecessarily extended? Simultaneously, I liked the build-up to the revelation of the letters . Hm...also, I have a soft spot for these kinda stories: historic-fiction setting
retellings / myths (so, different lore) haters -> lovers lol
3.5 - Sherlock retell
I liked the story...t'was predictable, but still a fun read. Definitely gave some BBC Sherlock vibes :)
I'm pleased to say that I was able to solve the mystery (almost immediately - which was a nice change because oft-times I over-analyze to the point of indecision LOL)...though the plot was kind of cliche, it had its own unique twist on The Classic Detective.
I NEED THE NEXT ONE NOW WHDOFBWLXBWOQ
i liked the pacing, the character development, dialogue, action-
fantastic story, overall
can't wait for book 3
Hmm....this was a good trilogy, but, maybe it's just the mood....it was actually quite well written and the story was actually quite well developed - i liked the arcs, and the conclusion.
But something about it...maybe because of the genre (dystopian ?) and it reminded me of other books that are of a similar caliber - I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to....which is a shame, because it actually really was a good story...
Interestingly, this is another story where the protagonist, Kestrel, played the piano :)
okay so:
- these 2 guys are waiting for Godot
- this guy and his slave come - the guy abuses his slave, the slave breaks into a dance and says some words that might be symbolic, and then they leave
- a boy comes and says “Godot can't come today, he'll come tmrw”
- the 2 guys are like “kay so like...we'll come back later”
~ curtain drops: intermission ~
- some time has passed (as evidenced by the leaves changing colour... ?)
-the guy and his slave come again except this time the guy is blind and the slave can't talk; the guy doesn't rmbr the 2 other guys
-the boy comes to tell the 2 guys like “yo, i dunno y'all but Godot can't come today, kay bye” and the 2 guys are distraught like “pls! we saw u yday! pls rmbr us!” but the boy has already bounced from the place
-the 2 guys contemplate death but they're like “we don't have a rope... let's come again tmrw to see if Godot comes but if not, we'll also have a rope”
~ curtain drops ~
i love Sherlock Holmes (how can you not) so i obviously had to check out this one (even though the cover kinda had me hesitating ¯_(ツ)_/¯ don't judge a book by its cover!)....some random notes:
there's a murder mystery (duh)there's a Watson/Holmes duo (Watts/Mycroft - and Watts is a female character)
the characters make Sherlock Holmes references the characters are 17/18, so they're “younger” versions of the classic duo...in fact, Watts/Mycroft are kind of their own character...
they're Australian! - the slang was interesting to decipher LOLoverall, a fun “light” read :)
breh false advertisement much thanks booktok
hmm...thinking back on it, it was a little bit all over the place, esp the mmc/fmc dynamic. that said, there were some good points to the story too, even if it was a bit on the nose. i think it's the author's first book so good effort
dystopian
05/02/2022: picked this one on a whim and it surprised me.
THE TITLE IS INCRIMINATING but the story was amusing enough; the f.m.c. stood out to me in that - she was completely normal. in most books the m.c. has some sort of insecurity, etc. but the f.m.c. was aware of herself, her boundaries, and pretty confident.
it's been a while - she might've had some insecurity that was part of the plot, but... idk, the vibe was different

bonus star for that one Nancy Drew reference LOL
