Realmente me gustó la película y por eso estaba tan emocionada por leer el libro. Sin embargo, pienso que lo hubiera disfrutado más si no fuera tan largo. Siento que hubo partes de la historia que pudieron haber sido cubiertas en muchas menos páginas y no alargadas por tanto tiempo.
I really liked the movie and that's why I was so excited to read the book. However, I think I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't too long. I felt that there were parts of the story that could've been covered in much less pages and not dragged for too long.

Como sea, en general sí disfruté el libro; pero aun no estoy segura si quisiera leer la secuela. Creo que esta puede quedarse como un final adecuado ya que la historia concluye y no deja dudas sin resolver.
Neverthelss, in general I did enjoy the book; but I'm still not sure if I would want to read the sequel. I think that this can remain as an adequate ending given the story concludes and does not leave unanswered questions.

It's a cute short story that I feel reads like a poem. Also feel like there's more under the surface that I didn't quite get.

I don't want to write anything about this book so I don't ruin the experience for anybody. All I should say is that it is fast-paced, thrilling, unpredictable, and has some serious HOLY SH*T moments. Perfect to keep you hooked the entire time.

The Heatwave takes us on vacation to the south of France prompted by a letter Sylvie receives one day at her London house. A small fire has taken place at La Rêverie, her French village childhood home; for which she needs to go to look at the damage and finally settle the selling arrangements.

This story is told using alternating times in Sylvie's life to which the author resorts to reveal details and information drop by drop, and also using beautiful descriptions charged with sensations, setting an ethereal atmosphere just right for this suspenseful tale.

I liked this book a lot, it was an awesome ride. The end felt a bit anticlimactic though, for which I give it 3.5 stars but rounded up to 4 because the rest was still very good.

It was a beautiful, somewhat sad, little book. The story is a short, simple song of dinosaurs falling in love, and the illustrations are the cherry on top.

There's not much to say about the plot of Midnight Sun since is the same as Twilight. However, the twist here, is that the whole story is now told from Edward's point of view.

I'm not even going to try to do an objective review considering pros and cons, because I absolutely loved this book and I thought it was PERFECT. A true masterpiece. Though I'm going to try to walk you through the factors I usually consider to rate books, for this one in particular.

First, there's the engaging story. Many people with whom I've talked to about Midnight Sun don't get what can possibly be new and different between this book and the first one of the saga: A LOT, actually. Being inside Edward's mind gives the reader a brand new perspective on the story, the characters, even the background story, and brilliantly reflects the growth and experience as an author that Stephenie Meyer has acquired through these last fifteen years. I could clearly see the improvement because, to be honest, I was reading and comparing chapters between both books along the way. There are so many details that add to the narration that previously felt missing and so many more that I couldn't have ever imagined, but that complement and complete the tale so well, it made my heart dance with excitement.

“I was used to the way that scent made me feel - the dry ache in my throat, the hollow yearn in my stomach, the automatic tightening of my muscles, the excess flow of venom in my mouth. This was all quite normal, usually easy to ignore. It was harder just now, with the reactions stronger, doubled, as I monitored Jasper.”[...]“My eyes locked for half a second with a pair of large, chocolate-brown human eyes set in a pale, heart-shaped face. I knew the face, though I'd never seen it myself before this moment. It had been foremost in every human head today. The new student, Isabella Swan”

Stephenie rises the narrative to a whole new level, with her descriptions of Edward's thoughts, feelings and emotions being so on point and clear that you can now fully understand scenes entirely and make sense of all his and -almost- everyone's actions and reactions; one of the advantages of the fact that your main character can read minds, has excellent hearing, sight, and a sister who can see the future. All the information we get about what is like being a vampire and about the Cullens specifically, is priceless.

“I looked down at the girl again, bemused by the vast range of havoc and upheaval that, despite her ordinary, unthreatening appearance, she was wreaking on my life.”[...]“‘Did you get contacts?' she asked abruptly.What a strange question. ‘No.' I almost smiled at the idea of improving my eyesight.‘Oh,” she mumbled. ‘I thought there was something different about your eyes.'I felt suddenly colder again as I realized that I was not the only one attempting to ferret out secrets today.”Then there is this sea of emotions. I found myself giddy, jumping in excitement, squealing, crying and dazzled (wink wink) more often than not. Getting to see, literally, how and why -really- Edward gets interested in Bella and how his emotions start to become love feelings was a wonderful experience. I truly connected with him many times when he felt anxious, uncertain, hopeful, by being involuntarily thrown under circumstances that made him more human than he could have ever imagined he could be again. There's so much depth to his character and, actually, to all characters, that the reader can discover in this book since their own personal backgrounds, motivations and dreams are displayed in its pages for us to devour. It somehow, at times, becomes kind of an anthology given all the cleverly intertwined stories we can get know: what happened during that time Edward was a “vigilante”, Emmett's encounter with one of i suoi cantanti, Rosalie's integration to the Cullen family, and so on.“I wondered what she would do when she saw me? Blush and walk away? That was my first guess. But maybe she would stare back. Maybe she would come talk to me.I took a deep breath, filling my lungs hopefully, just in case.”[...]“She looked that way sometimes when I smiled at her. Was she... dazzled?I would have loved to believe that.”On an interview with the author in the Remember Twilight? podcast (if you're a fan, this is a must, go check it out), she said something that perfectly resumes what Midnight Sun is all about: “You get to see how, through loving her, he learns to love himself”.I also loved that Stephenie Meyer didn't shy away from addressing all the problematics that have been talked about this saga since its rise to popularity. She did a great job in linking in either explanations that let us see the whys of certain situations or -better yet, in my opinion- acknowledgements by the very characters about these problematics.“I just confessed to stalking her and she sits there smiling?”Needless to say I was head over heels for Edward all over again. Though, surprisingly, I did get to love the entire Cullen family as he portrays them throughout all the other books, from Twilight to Breaking Dawn , and I wasn't able to since now. Again, it really changes your perspective seeing everything through new eyes. I must say: Emmett is, indeed, a brother I would love to have.I think there may be so much more to say and discuss and analyze about this book, but there's nothing more on my mind now. I think I covered the essentials of why this is precious and I also don't wan't to spoil or give anything away, because it was an amazing experience that I would like everyone to enjoy when going into this book. (As a side note: I think, too, that this could be a great standalone for anyone who hasn't read any Twilight saga content and want to just dip their feet a bit).This one goes into my favorites' shelf forever.“She dreamed of me. I wanted to dream of her.”

I can't think of much to say about this book. I only know it was a wonderful experience, just like everything else I've read from V.E. Schwab.

The story of Adeline, reborn (in a way) as Addie, and how she discovered what truly matters in life, left me speechless.

This book touches on themes like what it means to be really free, the relevance of art, the fact that everything comes with a price, and essence of being human.

I can't recommend this enough.

Esta novela narra una historia donde realmente no se le da mucha importancia al tiempo que transcurre. El personaje principal (en mi opinión) es el mundo. El mundo feliz. Y el relato de eventos se enfoca principalmente en cómo van afectando a nuestro personaje principal; debido a que el tiempo en sí no afecta al mundo, éste termina siendo irrelevante. Sí, hay algunos personajes recurrentes a los que seguimos ocasionalmente, pero sólo para ir conociendo cómo éstos afectan al mundo.
This novel narrates a story where the passing time is not given much importance. The main character (in my opinion) is the world. The brave new world. And the telling of the events is mainly focused in how they affect our main character; given that time itself does not affect the world, it ends up being irrelevant. There are some recurrent characters that we follow occasionally, but only to get to know how they affect the world.

La premisa de este “mundo feliz” es que no existen relaciones interpersonales “obligadas” como la familia, nadie sufre porque todo lo que puedas desear está al alcance de tu mano, y todo lo que puedas desear es factible porque los seres humanos son condicionados a su casta y el rol que conlleva esa casta en la sociedad desde el momento en que son creados en el laboratorio. Todos son de todos y todos trabajan para todos. La sociedad existe en un balance perfecto minuciosamente controlado.
The premise for this “brave new world” is that there are not “forced” interpersonal relationships such as families, no one suffers because everything they could wish for is at a reach of a hand, and everything they could wish for is feasible because humans are conditioned to their caste and the role of their caste in society since the moment they are created in the lab. Everybody belongs to everybody and everybody works for everybody. Society exists in a meticulously controled perfect balance.

Claro está, debe existir un conflicto que lleve la historia; algo que perturbe este balance. Y, efectivamente, existe uno.
Clearly, there must be a conflict to drive the story; something that disturbs this balance. And effectively, there is one.

Esto genera conversaciones y argumentos bastante interesantes que me hizo reflexionar sobre aspectos de nuestra realidad mundial y cultural actual, en por qué las cosas son como son y lo que sería necesario para un cambio verdadero.
This creates really interesting conversations and arguments that made me reflect on aspects of our current universal and cultural reality, on why things are the way they are and what would be necessary for a real change.

Es un libro corto y, debo admitirlo, a veces un poco tedioso ya que la escritura suele enfocarse en aspectos técnicos de la realidad del mundo feliz, por lo que le doy 3.5 estrellas. Sin embargo, si logras ver más allá de eso, es una lectura interesante, pero ciertamente no para todos.
Is a short book and, I must admit, sometimes a bit tedious because it usually focuses in the brave new world's reality technical aspects, for which I give ot 3.5 stars. However, if can see past this, is an interesting read, but certainly not for everyone.

Cinder is a sci-fi retelling of Cinderella. I never thought I'd get so invested the first time reading a story to which I already knew the plot and the ending. Or thought I knew.

In this futuristic version of the world where Lihn Cinder lives, she's the unwanted adopted child of a widow mother of two girls and former wife of a world-renowned scientist, who brought Cinder into the family after a life-wrecking accident stripped her of her memories and most of her human body. In this story, Cinderella is a cyborg.

This tale follows a cyborg, expert mechanic Cinder, trying to make the best of her days while living under the guardianship of a mother that does not want her and a sister that treats her as servitude. She only finds comfort in her close and loving relationship with her little sister Peony and in the company of the house droid, Iko. However, there are bigger thing happening in the world outside her daily struggles: the constant threat of a war with the mind-controlling Lunars, a “blue-fever” pandemic to which no cure has been discovered, and a sick Emperor that could leave the East Commonwealth (made up by most of the countries in the world) unprotected at any moment.
Este relato sigue a una Cenicienta cyborg y mecánica experta, tratando de sacar lo mejor de sus días mientras vive bajo la tutela de una madre que no la quiere y una hermana que la trata como servidumbre. Solamente encuentra consuelto en su cercana y amorosa relación con su hermana pequeña Peony y en la compañía del droide doméstico, Iko. I thought the retelling aspect was very well used throughout the weaving of this new narrative. It was enough for the reader to be able to relate some aspects and events between Cinder and the original Cinderella, but not too much, making it a somewhat original story. The key elements are still there: Cinderella being the unwanted child with two sisters, the sparkly dress, the sneaking to the ball, the midnight deadline, the lost “shoe”... But it still has many new things that help bring to life this first installment in The Lunar Chronicles saga and to make it a great one.
Considero que el aspecto de recuento fue muy bien usado a lo largo de la creación de esta nueva narrativa. Fue suficiente para que el lector fuese capaz de relacionar algunos aspecto y eventos entre Cinder y la Cenicienta original, pero no demasiado , convirtiéndola en una historia considerablemente original. Los elementos clave siguen ahí: Cenicienta siendo la hija no deseada con dos hermanas, el vestido brillante, el escabulirse al baile, el límite de medianoche, la “zapatilla” perdida... Pero aun así tiene tantas cosas nuevas que ayudan a traer a la vida a esta primera entrega de la saga de Crónicas Lunares y a hacerla una genial.

Though I have to be honest. It was only after the first half or the second third of the book when it really got me hooked. Is not that it was boring at the beginning, because many interesting things happened that kept me guessing and trying to come up with my own conclusions for the ending, but the pace was a little too slow. I still recommend it because it is very good, so good I hadn't already finished it and I ordered the next one to keep on reading about it asap and I think it does a great job as the first book in a series, which is to lay the groundwork for the world-building and presenting the characters, ending in a cliffhanger.
Sin embargo, debo ser honesta. Solamente hasta después de la primera mitad o el segundo tercio del libro fue que quedé enganchada. No es que haya sido aburrido al inicio, ya que pasaron muchas cosas interesantes que me mantenían adivinando y tratando de hacer mis propias conclusiones sobre el final, pero el ritmo fue un poco lento. Aun así lo recomiento porque es muy bueno, tan bueno que aun no lo terminaba y ordené el siguiente libro para seguir leyendo lo más pronto posible y pienso que hace un gran trabajo como el primer libro de una serie, que es sentar las bases para la construcción del mundo y presentar a los personajes, terminando en un momento de suspenso.

There's also something that I personally appreciated very much that the author did. She took a princess fairy tale, popularized for having a damsel in distress that ultimately is saved by a prince just for being pretty and of small feet, and made it a story about resilience and self-discovery, while still keeping the romance in but not making it the star of the show.
Además hay algo que hizo la autora y que personalmente aprecié muchísimo. Tomó un cuento de hadas de princesas, popularizado por tener a una damisela en peligro que finalmente es salvada por un príncipe sólo por ser bonita y tener pies pequeños, y lo convirtió en una historia sobre resiliencia y descubrimiento personal, mientras mantuvo el elemento romántico pero sin darle protagonismo.

I really really liked it. I can't wait to see how the other princesses turned out.

This action-packed story is the perfect sequel to the awesome beginning we had with Cinder, and the sci-fi element doesn't get left behind either.

In Scarlet, we are presented with the main character, namesake of this book. She is your typical badass that doesn't let anybody get away with it at her expense, though that seems to have given her some trouble in the past. We meet her while looking for clues and anything she can find about her missing grand-mère, whom everybody else in her little French town has labeled as the “crazy lady” and guess that she just went mad and ran away. But Scarlet, who has lived with her and been raised by her since she was a toddler, knows better. She knows her better that anyone else, and knows that she wouldn't just up and leave her without saying a word. Or so she thought.
En Scarlet nos es presentado el personaje principal, homónimo de este libro. Ella es tu típica chica ruda que no deja que nadie se salga con la suya a sus expensas, a pesar de que parece que eso le ha traido problemas en el pasado. La conocemos en un momento en que está buscando pistas y lo que pueda encontrar sobre su grand-mère desaparecida, a quien todos en el pequeño pueblo Francés tienen tachada de “vieja loca” y suponen que su locura pudo más y se fue. Pero Scarlet, quien ha vivido con ella y fue criada por ella desde que era una niña pequeña, la conoce mejor. Ella la conoce mejor que nadie más y sabe que no se iría así sin más. O al menos es lo que pensaba.

Honoring the suspense, plot-twisting and page-turning vibe left by the first instalment, Scarlet takes us on a journey alongside a shady, military type man nicknamed “Wolf”, to find her grandmother while unearthing so many secrets, seemingly, after each step of the way. All the while we, as readers, also get to follow Cinder right from where we left her at her imprisonment in Emperor Kai's palace at the ending of the first book.
Haciendo honor al la vibra de suspenso, de giros de trama y de querer darle vuelta a la página que dejó la primera entrega, Scarlet nos lleva en una aventura junto a un hombre misterioso de tipo militar apodado “Wolf” para encontrar a su abuela mientras descubre muchos secretos, pareciera, tras cada paso que dan. Mientras tanto nosotros, como lectores, también podemos seguir a Cinder desde donde la dejamos encarcelada en el palacio del Emperador Kai al final del primer libro.

Marissa Meyer once again does a wonderful job taking elements from the original fairytale of Little Red Riding Hood and making them her own on this reimagined futuristic tale, and also mastering the art of directing an intermittent plot, giving us just the right amount of Scarlet or Cinder at a time until they inevitably meet, at the climax of the story. Not in one moment did I feel disengaged from the co-protagonist that I wasn't reading about in any given section of the book, or did I forget about the last think we learned about her.
Marissa Meyer de nueva vez hace un trabajo asombroso tomando elementos del cuento de hadas original de Caperucita Roja y volviéndolos suyos en esta historia futurista reimaginada, y también dominando el arte de dirigir una trama intermitente, dándonos cada momento justo la cantidad exacta de Scarlet o Cinder hasta que inevitablemente se encuentran, en el clímax de la historia. En ningún momento me sentí desenganchada de la co-protagonista sobre la que no estaba leyendo en dada sección del libro, o que se me olvidara qué había sido lo último que supimos de ella.

Contrary to the first instalment, Scarlet keeps a mostly fast pace from the start and does not slow down, not even in the end, keeping the reader engaged and grasping for more after every turn of the page. Surprisingly, it doesn't become overwhelming or sloppy, as one might think (or at least that's how it was in my experience) and helps maintaining the hype for each revelation we are handed. Since this is also a retelling, of course is easy to guess most of the “twists” in the story, however, I think the manner in which they are presented to us keeps the excitement and the surprise element alive.
Al contrario que la primera entrega, Scarlet mantiene un ritmo mayormente rápido desde el inicio y no desacelera, ni siquiera en el final, manteniendo al lector enganchado y buscando más tras cada vuelta de página. Sorprendentemente, esto no se vuelve abrumador o descuidado, como uno pensaría (o al menos así es como fue en mi experiencia) y ayuda a mantener la expectativa por cada revelación que se nos entrega. Dado que esto también es un recuento, claro que es fácil adivinar la mayoría de los “giros” en la historia, sin embargo, pienso que la manera en la que se nos presentan mantiene vivos la emoción y el elemento sorpresa.

All in all, as I “reviewed” before I finished the book a few months ago, I was on the 400-page-mark with my hands already itching for Cress and that sneak peek at the end of the book was perfect. That didn't change much after I finished it, or even now, as I'm trying to move forward on my TBR list as fast as I can to finally get my hands on that pretty book waiting on my shelf.
Tomando todo esto en consideración, como “reseñé” antes de terminar el libro hace algunos meses, estaba en la marca de la página 400 con mis manos ya ansiosas por Cress y ese vistazo al final del libro fue perfecto. Eso no cambió mucho cuando terminé el libro, o incluso ahora, mientras intento avanzar en mi lista de libros por leer tan rápido como puedo para al fin poder poner mis manos en ese bonito libro esperando en mi librero.

This time l still liked it a lot, but not 5-star a lot. The story remains entertaining and I think the author made a great job at evoking the eeriness of High Place as well as portraying the disturbing things that Noemi gets to experience. Will definitely keep this in my to-reread list.

After making a deal with her father so she can continue her studies, Noemí heads to El Triunfo with a mission to find out what is happening in the mansion and, if necessary, bring her cousin back.

Before I start explaining why this is a great book and it easily deserves those 5 stars, I want to start with the cover. What a pretty thing! Besides the visual appeal, is the ideal way to set the tone of the novel.

It conveys the main character's identity, the ambiance of the scenery where the story takes place and the mysterious tone of the narrative. The latter is developed by a third-person narrator that is dedicated to follow Noemí, but that I think works perfectly because it helps maintain perspective over all that is happening without ruining the surprise element of each discovered secret, given it is not an omnipresent narrator.
Transmite la identidad del personaje principal, el ambiente del escenario donde toma la lugar la historia y el tono de misterio de la narrativa. Esta última es desarrollada por un narrador en tercera persona que se dedica a seguir a Noemí, pero que creo que funciona perfectamente porque ayuda a mantener la perspectiva de todo lo que sucede sin arruinar el elemento sorpresa de cada secreto descubierto, al no ser un narrador omnipresente.

The story is catchy since the beginning. However, it is not because the intrigue component is present from the very start, but because of the first interactions in which we can see our protagonist's personality:
La historia es atrapante desde el principio. Sin embargo, no es porque desde un inicio esté presente el componente de intriga, si no por las primeras interacciones en donde podemos ver la personalidad de nuestra protagonista (una disculpa si mi traducción no le hace justicia):

“Hugo looked like a younger Pedro Infante, which was a great deal of his appeal. As for the rest -personality, social status, and intelligence- Noemí had not paused to think too much about all of that. When she wanted something she simply wanted it, and lately she had wanted Hugo, though now that his attention had been procured she was likely to dismiss him.When they arrived at her house, Hugo reached out to her, grasping her hand. “Give me a kiss good night.”“I've got to tun, but you can still have a bit of my lipstick,” she replied, taking her cigarette and putting it in his mouth.”

“Hugo se veía como un Pedro Infante joven, lo cual era una gran parte de su atractivo. En cuanto al resto -personalidad, estatus social, e inteligencia- Noemí no se había detenido a pensar mucho al respecto. Cuando ella quería algo simplemente lo quería, y últimamente ella había querido a Hugo, aunque ahora que su atención había sido obtenida, lo más probable es que ella lo rechazara.
Cuando llegaron a su casa, Hugo la alcanzó, tomando su mano.
“Dame un beso de buenas noches.”
“Tengo que correr, pero puedes tener algo de mi labial de todos modos,” ella contestó, tomando su cigarrillo y poniéndolo en su boca.”

Personalmente, me pareció un caracter fuerte, ingenioso, talvez no completamente agradable, pero interesante de ver en situaciones de conflicto que seguramente vendrían después. Y vaya que hubo conflictos. Puedo decir que un 90% del tiempo no podía despegar los ojos de las páginas, fuera lo que fuera que pasara a mi alrededor, mientras navegaba por un mar de emociones: confusión, interés, sorpresa, felicidad, ansiedad, nostalgia, asco, tensión, excitación... Ustedes nómbrenla. Noemí realmente fue mi personaje favorito al ser representada como una joven que se ve atada a las obligaciones sociales de una mujer en los años 50 pero que saca el mejor provecho que puede de ello. Aunque también podemos ver el lado de esto que la aflige.

Todos los personajes contribuían su granito de arena a crear el ambiente tétrico pero a la vez místico que inevitablemente te invita a seguir y seguir leyendo. Cada uno de ellos estuvo tan bien definido, tan impredecible como una persona real, que por consecuencia, la historia nunca se volvió predecible; talvez sí en los aspectos o “típicas escenas” que uno espera encontrar en una novela de terror o suspenso, pero no en los detalles de esas escenas. Como cuando sabes que algo sobrenatural le va a suceder al personaje tomando un baño en medio de la noche, pero no puedes adivinar qué.

Se incluyen también tantos datos e información histórica tan bien investigada, que vuelve la lectura aun más interesante al momento de darse el espacio de indagar un poco en los temas que se tratan. Por ejemplo, aprendí sobre la eugenesia y que un primo de Charles Darwin fue pionero de este movimiento, o que José Vasconcelos fue autor y promotor de la ideología sobre la raza cósmica.

No quiero entrar en más detalles porque realmente es un excelente libro y siento que al decir más podría arruinar la experiencia completa. Definitivamente quiero leer más de Silvia Moreno-García. Gods of Jade and Shadow ya está en mi lista de “Quiero leer”.

This was a short read but somewhat difficult at the beginning, which made it a bit slow at moments. I had some difficulty with the Victorian style; I got confused several times and had to re-read the same paragraph twice or thrice.
Esta fue una lectura corta pero algo batallosa en un inicio, lo que en momentos la volvió un poco lenta. Tuve algo de dificultad con el estilo victoriano; varias veces me confundí y tuve que releer el mismo párrafo una segunda o tercera vez.

I liked the way the author manages the chronology and his use of different narratives from varied characters' point of view to slowly make the pieces of the puzzle come together, because this helped build up the tension and gives the story the mystery touch: it keeps you expectant of what piece of information will be revealed next.

I was also satisfied that all my questions were answered by the end, though the chronology's ending came actually at two thirds of the book ( for me, the excitement was diminished when finding Mr. Hyde dead on the floor and stilll having questions to answer). However, it was still interesting to, after, be able to know of all the events behind Dr. Jekyll's transformation.

Me gustó muchísimo que la creación y enredo unas con otras de las vidas de los personajes se sintiera tan correcto y natural. Conforme fui conociendo más de Sydney, Mitch y Serena -y claro, Victor e Eli-, no me sorprendieron sus reacciones o los cursos de acción que decidían tomar, aunque eso no significa que la historia se volviera predecible o tediosa. Al contrario, se volvió más emocionante y atrapante mientras avanzaba.

Este libro fácilmente podría ser un maravilloso libro autónomo, pero la probada de Vengeful (la segunda parte de esta duología) te atrapa firmemente con la promesa de una historia atrayente a través de un clavado profundo en el mundo ExtraOrdinario.

Definitivamente disfruté mucho esta lectura y rápidamente se ganó un lugar en mi estante de favoritos.

Loved it! And kind of made me want to rewatch the movie.

I'm still unsure about marking this as “Read” since I only skimmed through the entire second half of this book. I did get to the end, though, so I think I'll leave it like that.

I don't like speaking badly of books since I don't share the talent of writing and storytelling and, when I don't enjoy one, I usually try to find what I could see other people enjoying. Sadly, I couldn't find anything to be enjoyed in this book.

It started off interesting, setting the premise of a jealous mother-in-law and a momma's boy blind to the extents his dearest could go to get rid of his new girlfriend. However, all it did was make me mad.

All I could feel was anger towards all characters -not just the scheming mother- and I never got to relate or empathize with any of them, as there was nothing of substance that any could offer. By the time I got to the halfway mark, I couldn't bear it anymore, but keep on reading (and by reading I mean skimming through dialogs) only to prove me right on the “twists” that were yet to be revealed, as I had already guessed all previous ones.

I was also very disappointed by the ending as there was nothing in the 250+ pages before that gave any indication of the final reveal, so it felt very forced and out of character. There was even an attempt to tie everything together by making the main character “remember” certain things and moments that made it all click, but it just didn't work.

So, I've reached the end of my rant. I'm truly sorry, but I would never recommend this to anyone.

I think this is the most pretty and nostalgic book I have read in a while.

Nunca lo había escuchado despotricar así—sobre la guerra y los jóvenes muriendo por una causa que no entienden, y en la que mucho menos creen, y cómo aquellos que sí vuelven a casa son olvidados porque a nadie le importa. ¿Es tan disparatado, entonces, creer en algo bueno, tener la esperanza de que nuestro triste, horrible mundo no es todo lo que hay?

No soy exactamente conocedora del mundo de las hadas, pero me encantó que esto fue muy consistente con lo que sí sé, más algunos datos interesantes nuevos para mí. Por ejemplo, la descripción de cómo el aire se ondula con el movimiento de las hadas o la mención de los Niños Repique: ellos son nacidos entre medianoche de viernes y el canto de los cuervos en sábado, y se cree que tienen la habilidad de ver fantasmas y hadas. Cada pieza de información dada por la autora se entreteje cautelosamente en una historia fantástica, con tiempos alternantes, que termina en una maravillosa culminación de todo lo que pasa durante esa semana y media que Alice pasa en Darkling Wood.

Aprecié mucho que, a pesar de ser ficción juvenil, la historia incluye varios temas considerados “para adultos”, cuya discusión usualmente suele evitarse con los jóvenes. Los temas van desde profundo dolor familiar a la enfermedad de un ser querido hasta trauma post-guerra. Es bastante interesante y relacionable ver a nuestra protagonista pasar por todas estas cosas como una chica adolescente que constantemente está siendo apartada por “ser muy joven para lidiar con ello”. Los niños son capaces de comprender más de lo que solemos darles crédito - y eso se sintió muy cerca de casa.

He doesn't look back. The doors swing shut and he's gone. Part of me's glad. The other part is mad at him for running back to his new family because it's easier than staying here with us.
No mira hacia atrás. Las puertas se cierran y él ya no está. Parte de mi se alegra. La otra parte está enojada con él por correr de regreso con su nueva familia porque es más sencillo que quedarse aquí con nosotros.

Honestly, this book started a bit slow for me and at moments I had to push forward into finishing it, but now I finished, I noticed it was mostly because it was more dense than I expected. In the end, I can gladly say that it was worth it.
Honestamente, este libro empezó un poco lento para mí y, en momentos, tuve que esforzarme por terminarlo, pero ahora que terminé, me di cuenta de que en su mayoría fue porque fue más denso de lo que esperaba. Al final, felizmente puedo decir que valió la pena.

This book is about the transition of British 16-year-old Rachel from her childhood-veiled memories of Africa into the real world struggles that start to surround her when the African independence movement stirs up and locals start getting recruited to rise up against the British settlement. The story starts when Rachel gets back to her childhood home from her education years in England to which she was sent when she was a little girl and her mother recently died. This all develops against the backdrop of a beautiful African landscape perfectly described by the author (not that I've ever been there, but that's how good she does her job); she makes you be able to smell the humidity and dust in the air, and see the clear blue skies above and the abundant lilac jacaranda petals covering the dirt below.
Este libro es sobre la transición de Rachel, una joven británica de 16 años, desde sus memorias de Africa veladas por su infancia hacia los problemas del mundo real que comienzan a envolverla cuando el movimiento de independencia Africana empieza a tomar fuerza y los locales comienzan a ser recrutados para levantarse en contra del asentamiento británico. La historia inicia cuando Rachel vuelve al hogar de su infancia de sus años de estudio en Inglaterra después de haber sido enviada allí cuando era una niña pequeña y su madre había fallecido recientemente. The tale, however, is full of rich and well-defined characters that are very easy to despite or root for, and a crude set of events that gradually develop into a barrier that prevents Rachel from reconnecting with her beloved father and African family while clinging onto relationships and memories that no longer are what they were when she left several years ago.

What I liked the most about this book is that you can feel the main character's hope, longing and impotence with each situation she faces; your point of view transforming along with her intense desire to return to her childhood ways, the realization that old ghosts are very present in her family's current life, and that new threats are starting to creep in to separate her from her loved ones more than ever, even with her not being hundreds of miles away.
Lo que más me gustó de este libro es que puedes sentir la esperanza, anhelo e impotencia del personaje principal con cada situación que enfrenta; tu punto de vista transformándose junto con su deseo intenso de volver a sus costumbres infantiles, la comprensión de que viejos fantasmas están bastante presentes en la vida actual de su familia, y que nuevas amenazas comienzan a inflitrarse para separarla de sus seres queridos una vez más, a pesar de que ya no se encuentra a cientos de kilómetros de distancia.

In the end, there were some slow/very dense parts that, though, help build up the political background and understand the whys of how the plot develops, but concoct a riveting story of childhood yearning, buried secrets and the transition of a country into a new, independent setting.
Al final, hubo algunas partes lentas/muy densas que, sin embargo, ayudan a construir el trasfondo político y entender los porqué de cómo se desarrolla la trama, pero confeccionan una historia fascinante de añoranza infantil, secretos enterrados y la transición de un país hacia un entorno nuevo e independiente.

Una historia corta, enternecedora y triste. Sin embargo, a mi parecer, las acciones de Natsuru no tuvieron una razón clara de ser (lo cual probablemente sea acertado para un niño de 11 años) y eso me hizo no poder empatizar mucho con él.
Las dos estrellas no significan que sea un manga malo, sólo no fue particularmente de mi agrado.

I started The Mysterious Key and What It Opened because I wanted a short, light read. Having read before only Little Women from Louisa May Alcott, I wasn't expecting anything too far from a 19th century entertaining mystery - almost Sherlock Holmes' style (I've only seen TV series, so please don't judge if I'm wrong); really just wanting to enjoy her writing and know what did the mysterious key open.
Comencé The Mysterious Key and What It Opened porque quería una lectura corta y ligera. Habiendo leído anteriormente sólo Mujercitas de Louisa May Alcott, no estaba esperando nada muy alejado de un misterio entretenido ambientado en el siglo XIX - casi del estilo de Sherlock Holmes (sólo he visto series de televisión, así que por favor no juzguen si me equivoco); realmente sólo queriendo disfrutar de su escritura y saber qué es lo que abría esa misteriosa llave.

Instead, I was pleasantly surprised with Alcott's ability to deliver a mystery/gothic/suspenseful short story so different from Little Women's cute, motivational, sweet feel that I deeply love. I truly enjoyed it, being in a spooky-Halloween mode as I was when I read this.

This is a story that hooks the reader with the premise of a family curse and an inexplicable death, both of which move the story along when, a few years after the incident, a boy named Paul comes to the Trevlyn's house searching refuge as a favor to a friend of the widow's.

Paul becomes little Lillian's escort, growing a close relationship that I thought was very interestingly developed. We discover that he has a hidden task to complete and weird, eerie, spooky things start to happen in the house as answers start being searched for and secrets unearthed.
Paul se convierte en la escolta de la pequeña Lillian, haciendo crecer una relación cercana que creo fue desarrollada de una manera bastante interesante. The book had me deeply invested in what the big mystery was going to be and I also got a bit agitated through some suspense, nail-biting moments. Who would've thought a Louisa May Alcott's story would have me on the edge of my seat, expecting a jump-scare? Certainly, I didn't.
El libro me tuvo profundamente interesada en saber cuál iba a ser el gran misterio y además me causó un poco de agitación en unos momentos emocionantes y de suspenso. ¿Quién hubiera pensado que una historia de Louisa May Alcott me iba a tener en el borde de mi asiento, esperando un susto repentino? Ciertamente yo no.

This was so much fun and I highly recommend it. As Mandolin said in her review, it does remind you of the stories that Jo must have written because “that's what sell”.
Fue muy divertido y lo recomiendo altamente. Como dijo Mandolin en su reseña, en efecto te recuerda a las historias que Jo debió haber escrito porque eran “lo que vende”.
