Sometimes Stephenson's love of details is welcome, such as when it's exactly described how the characters deduce which apartment the hackers are in without any high-tech devices, handwaving, or mumbo-jumbo. But in the middle of a fight scene all the minutiae tends to detract from the excitement.
I was loving this until the contents of the trunk were revealed, then I kind of lost interest.
Yes, I agree with others who have said this could have used more editing. There are lots of extraneous bits and threads that are either not fully explored or too fully explored in relation to the ultimate importance they have on the story. But beyond that, I found the fact that this book was Too Big to be part of its charm somehow.
Also it's hilarious.
