An exceptional collection of stories that so clearly show the influence they hold on modern (especially male-written) literary fiction, for better and for worse.
It has all the theatrics and ego of poetry that I loathe, but there were actually a few poems that I really enjoyed.
Charming children's literature. I'm not a child though so who cares what I think about it.
The miraculous historical-fantasy-fiction lovechild of David Grann and Hayao Miyazaki, perfected by Saunders' trademark wit.
The closest I've come to actually enjoying poetry (still not very much, but noteworthy nonetheless).
There are many things I wish this book had covered, especially concerning all the people surrounding Jude, but I'm still enamored by the story it decided to tell and the empathy and sympathy it was able to drain from me. A truly heartbreaking book.
If the short story of this sad little town doesn't break you, then the generous, empathetic man at the center of it surely will.
This is the kind of story someone tells you before they ask for ten dollars, except this one is actually good enough that I'd think about giving it to them.
came into this vaguely familiar with onoda's story and was hoping this would be an elaborate retelling of it considering it's a work of historical fiction, but it's told mostly straightforwardly and didn't leave much to imagination. that said, it's still a really good story and short enough that i don't regret the few hours i dedicated to reading it.
One of the most depressing books I've ever read. It honestly probably lost a star for how much it fucked me up and bummed me out
You'd think I would've had a hard time reading this between all the leg swinging and blushing and giggling, but it actually went pretty smooth.
All the other reviews saying “this is exactly like that other romance book” LOL BRO THAT'S EVERY ROMANCE BOOK! I still enjoyed this one a lot.
“My hair. He tucked it behind my ear. He's just being nice and helping his ginger klutz roommate.” Girl BFFR FOR EVEN ONE SECOND PLEASE
this is just a very very very good romance. likable characters, a central conflict that's always present but always feels surmountable, and the perfect length to not ruin itself with inconsequential nothingness.
I was genuinely really loving this book so so so much and then it kind of just ended and I was like “oh ok I guess we're done”.
This one was such a joy to read, but Bee and Levi are the dumbest geniuses. Complete goofballs.
why is henry so GOATED WITH THE SAUCE?! in spite of that ending that i saw coming a mile away and libby being an extremely unlikable character (to me), the leads just had so much chemistry and good banter that i couldn't help but love it. and the pace!!!! henry could teach a masterclass on great pace. i'm so happy to have read another fantastic romance from her.
