Burnett single-handedly started my love for dusty Victorian mansions with hidden doorways while threading in themes of growth, grace, and renewal as two little kids mend their heartbreak together. Just love this sweet story and the Colin Firth movie adaptation.
Why this book?
Annie's story begins fun and idyllic as she meets a sweet boy, but she's suddenly swept away into the middle of a 19th century murder mystery. She has to be true to herself and loyal to her friends, even if it means not finding a way home. I vibed with the adventure, mystery, and selfless love.

Why this book?
Lucy inherits her grandmother's ruby ring, and like a children's version of a monkey's paw, she gets two wishes. So of course she wishes she could live in a big house with ponies, but the wish doesn't materialize how she expects. Lucy then has to navigate being a servant in 19th century Langley Castle, helps others, and makes life-long friends along the way. I remember the story being light, intriguing and a fun intro to another world so different from my childhood.
