(3.5 but rounding up)
I love the Netflix series based on this book and I wanted to love this just as much. It was good and I definitely enjoyed it but it lacked the substance that I wanted from it. I wished it went more in depth but I'm also conscious of the fact that I already have expectations set by the show. Besides from this though, it genuinely was creepy and psychologically scary - often catching me off guard. I really liked how it was written and overall really enjoyed it.
3.5 ⭐️ this was fun and creepy and sure it was a little silly and unrealistic but it's literally fiction so
3.5 stars
I love slow burn, simmering thrillers where the unease creeps up on you and this was definitely one of them.
Already knowing the crime and the offender from the get go, this story focuses more on how we got from the perfect nanny to a brutal murderer. And while I think this book was very well written (although I only read the translation), I was so disappointed and ANNOYED at the ending. I completely understand leaving it slightly open ended and not explaining exactly what drove Louise into her madness (I suppose to keep up the motif of still not knowing Louise fully no matter how close we are to her) but I still hated such an abrupt ending. I would have rated it 4 stars if it had more closure.
DNF @ chapter 5. I tried so hard but I just could not finish this book. El pisses me off. The story telling is boring. I don't care about any of the characters, and it feels like there is no plot. I'm so disappointed, I was so excited for this one.
