Very nice set of stories. Each one has something that touches you. Enjoyed reading this one.
Had some expectation that this book would reveal things about Bangalore which I didn't know. But it turned out to be a typical crime story and it can as well be any city. Not necessarily Bangalore.
Just wonderful. The way the writer tells the story is closely similar to Tejaswi. The characters are funny and it feels like we are reading about people from our own villages.
Worth multiple reads!
Brilliant story. It shows how political propaganda can turn people minds. The book tells about the horrific events resulted by partition of India.
Morrie tells us how to be happy and the real happiness is with the people around us and not in career, money and other things. The way he stands up against the inevitable is commendable. A great man, Morrie Schwartz.
It is a refreshing book. Though when I got it, I thought I was reading the Malgudi Days (of TV fame) but it is actually a collection of short stories. The novel which TV serial was based on is a trilogy starting with “Swami and Friends”
My next book I suppose.
The short stories are good. Most of the characters are from Narayan's other books (ex: Swami, Raman, Daisy, Boardless Hotel etc)
The Diary of a Young Girl has survived the greatest destruction of humanity and lived to tell the future generations of the horrible times of the second world war. In this diary, Anne writes down her daily life, the difficulties they had to face while hiding with utmost care. They could not live life in a normal way because of the people that were working in the same building who had no idea that Anne Frank's family was hiding in the above floor.
Anne Frank's family and Mr. van Daan's family and family friend of theirs namely Dussel go into hiding in 1942. They hide in the factory of Anne Franks father's friend who helps the 8 people. They hide for 2 years and in 1944, they are arrested by the Nazi and sent to concentration camps. Out of the 8 people, only Otto Frank, father of Anne survives to publish the diary of Anne Frank.
In some parts of the book, Anne Franks comes out as straightforward who does not keep anything to herself and says right to the person in the face. But sometimes, in the passages about Peter, she says how she has to be patient and not rush things fearing she might come out as modern. Throughout the book, she has a love-hate relationship with her mother, father, and her sister. She also had a changing opinion about Peter whom she starts loving at the end of the book. Throughout the book, Anne battles with herself about the various people with whom she is living. It is only natural for a teenage girl to have confusing thoughts at that age.
This is an important book which everyone should read in their lifetime to know impact caused by the Systematic elimination of Jews by Hitler.
A brilliant read. The descriptions of Kafka imprint an image through out the book and makes you think about Gregor nonstop and the situation he found himself in.
In this book, Ruskin Bond tells us the beautiful stories of the hills, memories, innocent love stories, going back to the roots, nature and other little but effective things. Each story is one of a kind and makes us think for a long time about the way it is told.
Ruskin Bond gives importance to preserving the nature and its inhabitants and uses this book to convey his message. He stresses about showing respect to the elders with few of the stories in this book. The stories in this book make us long for the childhood in our lives to experience them once again. The outdoor activities with friends, the simple times of early adolescence.
In “The Night Train at Deoli” story, the author tells about a boy who travels in a train and meets a girl who sells baskets in a station. Every time the boy passes across the station, he sees the girl and develops an affection towards her. He longs for the journey only because he hopes to see the girl again.
In “The Leopard”, we come to know about the evil intentions of men who want to destroy everything in nature. The author puts a strong message that the animals do not trust humans because the humans are greedy.
There are many stories which show the love of hills by the author. He constantly says that once you have lived with the mountains for any length of time, you belong to them, and must return again and again.
The book is a must-read for anyone who loves reading about nature and want to relive the earlier times. The stories are fast paced and when you finish reading the book, you will start craving more.
A beautiful life story of a gooner comprising ups and downs just like Arsenal. The similarities he find between his life and the Arsenal club are brilliant.
Must read for every fan!
Beautiful. The portrayal of older days of Afghanistan before it turned into a pile of ash and rubble. The story of two brave women who find comfort in each other amidst all the terror surrounding them.
A story of immigrants that spans for over 100 years and portrays the immigrant experience in Japan.
The power of crowd, the Lad culture and football. The author gives his experiences of the football scene in England during the 80s. Glad the situations are much better and safer for everyone.
hot damn! that was shocking and i cannot believe what i've just read! truly amazing!
A story which shows the undying courage and resolve of humans. To travel 4000 miles on foot in diverse and difficult climate takes a lot of strength.
This book is about the unsuccessful rebellion of Igbo community against the Nigerians which lasted 3 years.
The book is told through the experiences of several character on how the war affected their life and made it difficult.
It is such an eye opener to know about the Biafra war which was ignored by many countries and failed to recognise the condition of civilians who struggled to carry on.
Its a fun read about the simple minded Painter who meets a girl who has her own different views about family, children, marriage and other things which are considered normal by most people in the society.
