A series of narratives of what happens when maths go wrong in the real world. Since no one is perfect, mistakes are everywhere...Engineering mistakes and maths mistakes have immense consequences - some hilarious, some tragic.
Well-crafted scream of consciousness POV story with just enough normal to feel real and just enough crazy to feel like fantasy. It's a fast paced easy read with the plot pulling you through the story. You think that things are fine and you are nodding along; then...it is madness.
Strange, dystopian - so much world building but such a short book - it's hard to get into the story because there is so much that the reader has to process.
Combining a history of food with narratives that bring it to life - why do we love certain foods?
bit of a lame - captured prisoner/hero rescue plot but some fun world building and adventure
I love this story. This is the second book. Read the first one, even though you don't “have to”. It will make so much more sense.
The first part of this episode is hilarious - especially comparing and contrasting the different characters' reactions to traveling across America. The book also goes through a few rough patches. All in all, a good continuation. It ends with directly a call to book 3.
Baz is still my favorite. He's one of my all time favorite characters now.
I loved the characters - especially Baz, so conflicted.
The story moves along quickly, and the story is quite funny - mostly situational humor.
There is quite a bit more kissing than I enjoy in books, but it is sweet, and these poor kids need all the fun and sweetness they can get.
I listened to this one. Nice short interview with author at the end; shocked to hear she was inspired for the main character by an Eddie Vedder song. Must listen to Guaranteed. Must get the next book. This book has some issues - mostly with the pacing at the beginning and dialogue. However, it improves over time with both.
The plot pulls the story along. Characters develop; some more than others.
Overall, this is an interesting story for kids that highlights the challenges of military families and puts a multilingual Spanish kiddo as the POV character. It also shows the value of teamwork. The animals are snarky; which is fun.
It starts off a little slow and repetitive, but it gets moving.
There is real violence and danger in the last half of the book.
When our POV character survives but in a place she's never been...and then she comes to have near god like power. She still feels like she is not in control of her self or her life or her choices.
On the whole, the book is depressing, continuing the theme. I, unfortunately, expected something good to happen in this book. I am not sure if I will read the next one. Surely there will be a next one because the ending cannot be the end.
We get a bigger look at the world. We get a closer, deeper look at some characters. The author does well at making us care about the characters.
This book is a fun story about what it means to be a friend, to be yourself, to trust, and to wait. It's about patience and of honor.
There were a couple of times where it seemed the characters had the thoughts of older kids - just slightly more aware and mature and outside thinking, but it doesn't take away from the story.
