disgusting. i don't care for deep meaning or beautiful writing, im not reading a book about a 67 yo man abusing a 17 yo KID. it's not a consented relationship, its a gross elder abusing a girl with daddy issues & a heavy lack of self-esteem.
ew
I lost my love for reading years ago, and I think this book just bring it back to life. It was really beautifully written and easy to read.
Felt like I was enveloped in an eerie atmosphere when reading it and it was definitely an amazing experience.
I definitely recommend it to people like me, who are seeking to get back in touch with reading.
Chilling, frightening, was losing my mind along with Kenji.
Have to admit it felt a bit boring at times. Took me longer than planned to finish.
But that may also be because I was too anxious about what was going on to keep on reading lol.
No but it was seriously so tense at times that's crazy.
An interesting take on mental insanity embodied by Frank. I enjoyed the portrait of Japan's night life & lonely souls as well.
The ending was a bit lacking though and some scenes were a tad too graphic but ig that's what I signed for.
après avoir vu la hype autour de ce livre et étant une amoureuse du réalisme magique j'avais vraiment hâte de commencer ma lecture.
ce fut une aventure beaucoup trop confuse, que je me dois donc d'arrêter.
life's too short to force myself to finish books i'm clearly not enjoying reading.
a big let down.
finally a GREAT book omg
i loooooved the structure, the writing style (very straight to the point, not dragging itself out), the non-fiction fiction element. it just made everything feel so real and tangible. i would pay a loot of money to see a movie adaptation
the way he deconstructed his own “construction” in a very self-aware way was so refreshing too see, especially in the horror genre. so i appreciated both, the story but also the commentary on misogyny, mental health, religious fanatism & how they intersect
the way those pastors really tried to interpret very straightforward and easy to understand things in a way that didn't go against their beliefs was very interesting to see, as well as how feeling like you're in a dead end makes you sink deep into religion, in an often fruitless seek of hope
by the way, how is he so good at writing “non-fiction” while building such a great story, with stomach churning plot twists ? idk. the last pages really kept me on the edge of my seat. so twisted, yet so good
all the characters felt real, like they didn't behave like book characters but actual people. they were such a mix of confusion, fear, despair, with marjorie's very complex & tormented mind. i still don't know if she just listened to the voices in her head on those last pages, didnt mean to actually kill people or if she just wanted to hurt merry
all that to say that i very much loved reading this book
2 for the plot, 2 for the incredible narration
it genuinely felt like i was watching a movie, thats how immersive the writting is
there were a lot of unnecessary parts tho, and that ending is not my favorite
but i still enjoyed the reading experience, especially the tense atmosphere
so fucking dumb. dumb plot, dumb characters. AFTER 9 YEARS OF VIOLENT ABUSE, WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU WANT TO EXTORT MONEY FROM YOUR CAPTOR INSTEAD OF FUCKING GOING TO THE POLICE ???? MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE.
and those plot twists went from stupid to stupidER. i hate this book.
it's such a waste because the writing style was actually nice, read it like a breeze, but that damn plot
THIS IS SUCH A GREAT BOOK !!
A slow & disturbing descent into madness.
Greatly exposes the way loneliness can break someone's mind & make them completely give up on themselves just for an illusion of happiness and affection.
She didn't care about how toxic and deeply harmful their relationship was as long as she felt loved. She was in utter despair to receive love.
Sickening psychological horror, 5/5 would recommend.
hate stories exclusively built on STUPID characters, things have...spoke is still a masterpiece tho <3
hated the writing style & how corny it was at times (i don't wanna see edtwt #s or @s in a book, can't take it seriously). it was really giving wattpad
also it was way too unbelievable like no way every person this girl encounters' that dumb
& no way she's that dumb either
2.5, very average sinon mediocre
hated some of the pop culture references, hated alex & her stupid decisions, & the whole book just wasnt as interesting as i thought it would be
also pretty mediocre dialogue & immature GROWN ASS characters
hated that story within a story situation, also disliked the way the ending felt rushed
That was weird. I basically expected something else ? It started off interesting & just kept getting quite weirder & weirder. And that ending left me hungry & dissatisfied.
Wouldn't say it‘s a bad book, but it was just confusing, the whole plot got me lost like what was even going on exactly ??
INCROYABLE
i was initially pissed by the structure of the book, namely the back to back switch between many characters, felt like i would never be able to remember shit about them. oh boy was i wrong
absolutely loved the different plots, the twists and turns were so subtle yet effective. most chapters were short and ended with a cliffhanger, which made me even more excited to know wtf is going on
some happy endings, some less happy ones but overall a really really really interesting & well written book
i feel very conflicted. on one hand, it was a pretty entertaining and easy to read book. on the other molly was written in such a cliché way, like you can't be more oblivious.
does nita think neurodivergence means having the social awareness of a 3 yo ? and all that while randomly acting clever and logical out of nowhere
molly is such annoying character to read like god, i don't wanna be offensive but damn girl !!!!! and why did ANYONE treat her accordingly to her psychological state ? why was this bitchass officer so oblivious to the very obvious fact that this molly girlie might be a little special ? matter of fact, why is it never brought up in her defense ? i don't understand
also, how the hell did she keep that “murderer identity” secret for so long ? it makes no sense when you know her personality. why all the lying and random violent thoughts ??
its fucking stupid im so sorry. too much suspension of disbelief required & too many dumb decisions made just for the sake of the plot.
emma's dumb, like do you have 0 instinct de survie at all ???? pourquoi se réfréner d'alerter la police & dans la même veine save you damn life just to save a neighbour you know nothing about ???? or risk your life for a dog ???? im sorry it makes 000000 sense
n how did she survive being poisoned then dunked into the ocean w a bag full of rocks ????? how did her husband instantly forgive her after ghosting him for MONTHS, & when they just lost their child ????? (TOTALLY HER FAULT BTW!!!!)
6 FUCKING STARS
i adored this book from start to finish !!
absolutely loved the way millie was written, actually the way the whole book was written like i was so invested in the story????
i genuinely felt every emotions the girlies were feeling, anger, pain, FEAR
i literally threw my phone away to some point because it was so tense I WAS TOO ANXIOUS TO CONTINUE READING
the plot twists had me SCREAMING, and the ending was so beautiful???
it was just an amazing reading experience <3333
first it was boring, almost dnf it but decided to keep reading just to see if i could be proven wrong, if anything interesting would happen
then it got fucking stupid, un plot twist tiré par les cheveux built en induisant le lecteur en erreur & plain out deception, THATS THE LAZIEST TYPE OF PLOT TWIST
then it got even more stupid, to the point of it being ridiculous, like nothing makes sense at all. there's just too much going on PICK ONE
im annoyed
i officially despise back to back alternative timelines
& this book just lost me idk, it just wasnt as good as i expected it to be
and a LOT of things were just trop tirés par les cheveux honestly, at some point i had to violently roll my eyes
it was doing too much, too many twists, too many reveals, too many turns, & those hallucinations? ass
very unsatisfactory read, 2.5
2.5
plot twists trop tirés par les cheveux, & globally unrealistic plot (you're telling me police found noooothing wrong with him, even despite the fact that he went around pretending he was deaf ? like is that not fishy ??)? jsp it just seems too easy & unsatisfying
also the fact that she left absolutely no clues seems a bit much, like the whole thing doesn't make a lot of sense
that last sentence doesn't seem right with me too, i know the author was tryna make us have a
Started off well but couldn't get myself to finish. Got heavy & quite boring for some reasons
edit : finished it 2yrs later, very immersive & interesting book. very disgusting and appalling at time. a bleak and lugubre aux derives de la victim mentality, & how we can become notre propre bourreau, juste pour inspirer de la pitié et de la sympathie aux autres
I don't get why it was marketed as “funny, quirky, humorous”. Didn't laugh a bit, just felt bad for Keiko.
It's a well executed deep dive into societal norms & the unfair treatment of those who don't fit in.
I really loved the ending, she finally embraced her feelings, her individuality and put it over what society expects of her.
I'm not gonna lie it was boring & sleep inducing at times but still a good book !
