I can see why some people didn't get on with this book because it was really no plot, barely any characterisation, just vibes
But those vibes were immaculate!
I saw a commenter describe reading it as like waking up from a pleasant dream, where you're starting to lose the main thread but revelling in the warm feeling that it left behind and that is exactly it
Ok ok I know 3/5 is a low rating for me for a fantasy but I just didn't buy into the Oak/Wren romance at all and that did sorta ruin it
I think it's the probably of the pov switch honestly we never saw Oaks POV falling for her so from the start he just randomly loves her even though she's literally being the enemy
This was just a lot of women suffering for no reason. There was no overall moral purpose or message from it, just suffering. And they didn't even rise above it with their own strength they all got saved by magic?!
The writing was not good enough and the characters were not strong enough to justify me reading pages and pages of trauma
I also hate the message that all men are bad like one of the men is described as “a good man but a man none the less” cmon it is 2024 we aren't going to get anywhere with more divisiveness
Ugh this just felt incredibly sexist. A lot of women suffering for and having to fix problems caused by men. And glorifying their suffering. Thinking back on it makes me so angry I'm dropping a star
Also the writing sucks. The bio says the author is a playwright and you can really tell because it read like a script
