It was really cute! Pretty sad too, which is something I wasn't expecting. The main character was relatable and I liked all of the boys. But Cam was definitely my least favorite- oops.
The only gripes I have with it are the fact that I found the flashbacks annoying and that the “plot twist” was pretty predictable, at least it was in my opinion.
Overall it's a really cute book that's pretty addicting and worth the read.
We read this in class and it was okay. I think I prefer Paulsen's other novels, such as Hatchet, to this one however.
I love a great romance and this was a great romance.
What brings this to 5 stars, though, is the thoughtful depiction of OCD in this book. It's a rare thing when I am able to consume a piece of media where OCD is described on a level that I can actually relate to (you know–the character with OCD is not a serial killer in this book). Accurate depictions of mental health are important, and it made me so happy to see that in this book.
I have such mixed feelings about this one.
Overall, the story was very, very cute and I think Adam and Olive had great chemistry. I'm also a sucker for a fake-dating story and this one was a solid one.
With that said, some of the science did make me cringe (listen– if you're going to write a book based around science and academia, make sure it's accurate). And some of the phrasing was also very awkward and, again, made me cringe.
I am also curious as to who edited it. The second half of this book had a shocking amount of obvious errors, especially spelling errors. Hopefully, this gets resolved in Hazelwood's future books because I think she has a lot of promise as an author.
Reeeeeally thought I'd updated this but apparently not, oops.
Anyways, y'all know I love these books. This one is no different. I also love how this one delved into some more serious topics as well– great for illustrating Oseman's range as a creator.
Nah, cause what happened in this book and why didn't I completely hate it. The bar only gets lower for me, I am scared to say.
I did enjoy this book and found it quite informative.
There were certain things I wanted to hear about more in the book (especially microplastics!), but after looking at the publication date I can't really hold that against the book itself.
With that said, it was an enjoyable read which was made more enjoyable from my background in art history, oddly enough, since it largely discussed design history which I found rather fascinating. My only complaint is that I didn't feel there was a strong call-to-action for the average person. Of course, production needs to change at the industry level, but I was hoping for a small and more explicit call-to-action for the individual person in addition to the system.
Me and these books have a toxic relationship, so I am going to take a break and reconsider my life choices before picking up the next one if I ever do.
Overall, I thought this was a very nice retelling of The Great Gatsby. I really enjoyed Jordan's character and oddly felt connected to her in a number of ways. The writing style was also quite lovely and I do hope to read more of the author's work in the future.
The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is the development of magic in this world. I felt rather confused by it for the most part and wished it played a larger role in the book than it did. In many ways, it felt as though it were haphazardly thrown in there at random times when it felt convenient to fill plot holes or word count.
In all, I would absolutely recommend this book! It's one of my favorite retellings I've personally encountered (and I do love me a good retelling).
So good, so good, so good.
This was a highly anticipated read for me this year and I'll be honesty, I wasn't sure how I felt about it the first 100 pages. However, the remaining 260 definitely made up for it! I loved this book and would recommend it in a heartbeat.
I really liked this! I don't think all of it made total sense, but I was utterly hooked.
I liked this! I enjoyed the story and I'm glad I read it.
I really tried not to compare it to RW&RB since I'm concerned that might be a reason for the big divide on this book. I enjoyed the story, and the romance, I just can't give it 5 stars because I did not like our protagonist.
I wanted to like August, I really did. I loved every other character in this book, to be honest. I just found August to be a bit whiny, repetitive (in the things she said), and not-like-other-girls (ack). Fortunately my dislike for her didn't ruin the overall book.
Overall, I enjoyed it and I'm glad I read it!
I enjoyed this book a lot. With that said, there always felt like there was something missing, something off.
It really reminded me of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, but set in modern New York City. It felt a bit forced at times, and pretty much stuck exactly to the story.
While it was interesting to see the story unfold through the Beast's eyes, I didn't always feel like his character was a realistic male character. You could argue that it was because of the change and the circumstances, but I don't know. I stand by my beliefs.
The romance was okay but not great. Overall, I thought it was a good, easy read. Nothing too special or terrible in my opinion.
Listen, there's only so far addictive writing can take you. This book has no plot for 95% of it, and while I might be a sucker for the characters and “love” story (lol), I just don't think you get a free pass for writing about nothing for 40 chapters.
Onwards to book 3!
Really fascinating and beautiful read. I just wish we'd gotten some clarification on several things relevant to the plot and world building.
This was so good. I don't read enough true crime. Why don't I read more true crime?
I digress.
I love how this book is written. I listened to the audiobook and wow. Just wow. The narrator did an excellent job at bringing this story to life.
This is one serial killer I'd never heard of before so the book and its contents were completely new to be. It's an excellent read and I think it would be a great introduction into true crime for those looking to break into the genre.
I enjoyed reading this book, but I still don't understand this book. The main character was incredibly compelling, however, so while I don't think the plot made much sense (and I still have many, many questions, and not the good kind), the character salvaged at least some of this book for me.
