Book Club Pick #2
This story is very strange. But I was definitely entertained, and I don't think I'll forget it for a long time.
I read this after reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones and the Six, so I had high expectations, and I was a little disappointed. It sounds like there's a consensus that earlier Taylor Jenkin's Reid novels are different than her two most recent books (Evelyn and Daisy). So, that's probably good to know going in.
All comparisons aside, I enjoyed the story. I thought the concept was interesting and I liked the main character and I really liked her family, especially the grandma! One thing I found surprising was how sad this book was. Not “bawl your eyes out” sad, but just kind of depressing to read about how unhappy the two main characters were in their marriage.
Okay, I definitely need an Ove in my life!!
There's really not much plot, but Ove is just so grumpy, and funny, and lovable that you don't care! You just want to learn what made him the way he is, and root for him to get a happy ending.
Side note: I listened to the audiobook, and while I still really enjoyed the story, I think I missed some of the charm that would have come from reading the physical book.
