A fast-paced cinematic novel (20th Century Fox bought the rights to it I believe). An elite crime fighting unit in NYC led by Sgt. Denny Malone battle crime, their own deep involvement in corruption and the more complicated corruption at higher levels of government. Lots of intrigue, violence and a story that is in the hands of an author who can really move the plot along. If you liked books or movies like Serpico or The Departed you'll most likely love this novel.
Really enjoyable novel. Humorous and touching. If you liked “A Man Called Ove” or “A Confederacy of Dunces” then you'll probably like this.
I'm a sucker for techno-thrillers and Daniel Suarez does a great job of delivering novels where technology is pushed to some barely foreseeable degree. This time its genetic modifications. Fast moving as always and story driven by tech. If you enjoyed Michael Crichton novels then you'll most likely enjoy Daniel Suarez's work.
Difficult dated reading. The story is lost in endless parenthetical remarks. There are online guides that can clue you into the many references throughout the book.
Good writing. The story wasn't that interesting for me but I did enjoy the writing.
Free download on my Kindle, good detective novel
Plot moved along. Protagonist, woman from town where murders are occurring, and now a FBI agent, was interesting. Scenes were just ok. Overall story was ok.
Enjoyed this up to a point. Began to seem long-winded and unnecessary for the last couple hundred pages.
Memoirs, in general, are not something I'd read. Someone loaned me this book after they really enjoyed it so I read it. I don't think there's anything particularly 2-star worthy in this book. Its just that I don't enjoy reading these works. Hey, at least I can talk about it with the lender now and understand what's being discussed.
An older book (1990) in the field of cognitive psychology but a great introduction to the early research that led Professor Seligman (U of Penn) to spend his career researching helplessness and how to overcome it. There are online versions of the various tests in the textbook so I'd recommend using those rather than doing them out of the book and then having to grade them (the online versions do the automatic grading). I'd also recommend checking out his TED talk if you enjoy the book.
Interesting historical fiction about a young German immigrant girl captured by the Kiowa and then sold back after a few years. The story is about her long travel through Texas with an older man, Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd, who aims to return her to whatever relatives are left. Time is 1870, shortly after the end of the Civil War, with Texas in a tumultuous state. 2016 National Book Award nominee. The author was a poet prior to the publication of this novel and the imagery is vivid and engaging.
Interesting rambling discussion of sapiens. How we came to dominate the planet and why? good mix of philosophy, history, archeology.
so difficult to explain a language. you learn so much more from just doing. This isn't a bad intro to Ruby though from the looks of it.
Like a lot of other readers I found this book exasperating. I appreciated the mythical approach and the mystery that needed to be solved but the pace was glacial. Definitely not for me.
Another very good Claire North book. Unique imagined scenario where a “ghost” is moving from body to body via touch taking over their consciousness.
Its gritty Boston as a quiet bartender makes a journey of faith through the violent world around a drop bar in an area that probably bears a striking resemblance to the Dorchester that Lehane grew up in. Similar to Elmore Leonard in capturing the patterns of speech of the subculture. And, hey, its a movie too. Will have to see if I can catch that to see how it was interpreted for the screen.
Some OK but very basic recipes but the tone is just odd and I didn't find the gimic funny.
