Beautiful story. Maddie is used to living the high life but when her husband Ellis and his friend Hank decides to go look for the Loch Ness, her world is horribly turned upside down.
She has to get used to another country in a small village, left alone on most days, she starts a friendship with the help and at the same time discovers that her life is not what it all seems. The Loch Ness is not the only monster in this story.
An enjoyable historical fiction.
This is book number two of the Promise Falls trilogy (there is a 1.5 called Final Assignment that's available but not necessary to read). This is not a standalone book, it has to be read in order to understand the story.
Bombs explodes in a drive-in The Constellation with the screen falling down on cars and killing four people. This was not an accident but deliberate murder. Dective Duckworth is on the case while identifying the bodies, someone broke into one of the victims house looking for something. The daughter of the victim contacts private investigator Cal Weaver ( who was featured in the novel A tap on the window) to found out what they took and why. He gets more than he bargained for taking on this case. Also David Harwood is back being the assistant tp Finley who is trying to be re-elected mayor, deep down he knows it's the wrong thing especially when Finley does a faux-pas going to the drive-in for publicity but since losing his job at the newspaper he has no choice..
Not only do they have to deal with the killing at the drive in but so much is happening all at the same time, the significance of the numer 23 that started in the first book, kidnapping attempt, spouse sex swapping and trying to find out who killed a woman three before and Rosemary Gaynor not too long ago.
What I love about this author is nobody is safe in his novels. The characters are complexed, well written and all have their faults. Detective Duckworth not only does he have to investigate the murders, lose weight but has to deal with his son working for Finley springs, a man he despises and knows he wants something in return. David Harwood is working for the would be mayor who makes his skin crawl also feels that something is going on with his parents, the death of his aunt still haunts his mother but his father is acting strange. Cal Weaver comes back to Promise Falls after losing his wife and son, to start a new life but thinking he's just going to help a friend with a break in becomes a more twisted situation in more ways that one.
I love this book, a lot of twists and turns that at one point you think that too much is happening but at one point it starts to connect to each other. Some twists are still not answered in this one and since it's a trilogy, all will be answered in the next one. I've been reading quite a few books from Linwood Barclay and still haven't found anything negative to say about him. I truly enjoyed the book that I couldn't put down.
5 stars.
Having being dissapointed by the book [b:You're Next 10148340 You're Next Gregg Hurwitz https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1393104022s/10148340.jpg 15046649], this one made up for it big time. Great characters, awesome story. Keeps you guessing all the way through. Fast-paced, intriguing, action-packed, can't wait to see what's next for Evan Smoak!
This is a romance story but more than that, it's a zombie romance. This one is particular because it's ‘R' the zombie who is telling the story. He doesn't remember how he became a zombie but he knows he's different than the others. He talks and listens to music and when he eats the brains of his victims he remembers a part of their lives.
During a hunt he meets Julie, he doesn't want to eat her but he wants to save her. He starts to bound with her and something inside of his zombie body changes.
Not only this is a romance book but also a post-apocalyptic tale and the questionning what would happen to humanity if we lost it all.
Well written, funny and sweet at the same time.
Beautiful book, yes it's sad look into a family living with a family member with Huntington's disease but it is done with brilliance. You can sense everybody's fear, anger and love through this book. I knew a little bit about this disease by watching documentaries but this book gives you a personal aspects and you cannot read this book without shedding a tear more than once.
This is a dark, beautiful, intriguing novel. Theo Decker is telling you through his life from the day his mother died tragically. His life goes trough mostly a dark path (drugs, alcohol). We do get sucked in each step of his life until he reaches adulthood. You see through his eyes in extraordinary detailed, the people, the scenery. At times, this book is depressing but you just keep on reading. A remarkable read.
L'm giving this book a three stars. I couldn't get into it until I passed half of it. The story is seen though the point of view of four characters. They are well developped, the story is interesting but since it's not a genre l'm not that really familair with and it took awhile to get my minset in the book. It's still a good fantasy book and will continue the series.
New York 1817, Catherine Benneth is a doctor which is a rarety in those times. She sometimes has to dress like a man to practice the job that she loves. One night, she's attacked and is saved by her friend James. Her gratefulness doesn't last when he tell her she's accused of murdering a man from a respected and wealthy family. Wrongly accused and afraid of being hang, she changes her name to Laura Ellington and runs away with her maid Maureen to Colorado.
On their way there, the are brutalized violently by Indians and she ends up in Texas. She becomes a war doctor but she still has to look behind her back afraid someone will recognize and turn her in.
Catherine/Laura is a fierce, stubborn and brave woman, a rôle model to some woman for her time but not respected with most of the men. With the murder accusation, the violence and the disrespect of many, she's still is strong, determined person.
I truly enjoyed this suspense/mystery novel. Lots of twists that will keep you guessing and of course there is love and passion included. There is graphic violence and language but it goes with the story.
Great characters, great story makes this one an amazing book.
The fight between good and evil is back again at Hogwart's. More action and suspense makes it a amazing book. This book was better than the first one. Wherever Harry Potter is at, trouble follow him but with the help Ron and Hermione and nothing can stop them. Having seen the movie first, I can say that yes the book is better but they did a pretty good job giving it life on the big screen.
Abby, her three year old daughter is dead. Jodie wants to end her life but she has one more thing she has to do: kill the person responsible for her daughters death, her husband Ethan. She succeeds but she
s still alive and now in jail. While in prison, she discovers that Ethan had a lot of secrets and Jodie will try discover who her husband really was.
Jodie is a great character. In the beginning she was weak because she had nothing to live for but then she became this strong heroine who you had to root for until the end. She lived in a town where people respected her husband and when she tried to get help, her charming husband made sure that the town would turn their back on her.
Novak, a journalist who has been hounding her for awhile to speak to her gets a chance to give a piece of information that makes her go forward in her quest for the truth. Even though Novak has some personal problems, hes there to help her and the pairing if these two characters was perfect.
This book has violence especially abuse, this kind of story can happen to anyone, which might upset some readers but it was integral for the story to understand some of the characters.
It was a gripping, thrilling book. The writing was on point. Some parts were a little bit slow but then it became this fast paced thriller that you couldn
t let go. A lot of twists happen, some are predictable but most of them were total surprises. This is a dark story and you feel if for the moment that you start reading it, her description of the characters and the setting made the book more real and easy to visualize.
This was my first time reading Ava McCarthy and she did not disappoint.
