I enjoyed this Duet, but not nearly as much as Travis & Viola. I connected with Courtney because she yearned after a man she couldn't have, especially a sexy man in uniform. I'm glad there was some drama and excitement in the plot, the crazy ex kept me guessing. About 2/3 of the way through I was honestly tired of the characters though, and I was ready to move on. Not enough to DNF, which I'm glad I didn't because the craziness near the end made it worth finishing. The spice was hot, but not as hot as T&V, in my opinion. I'm not sure if I will continue the Checkmate series, as I don't really care about Logan and Kayla. shrug
DNF @ 26% (3hr 40min in the audiobook).
I LOVE Marissa Meyer. She's one of my all time faves. But I could not get through this book. Maybe because I'm an adult and listening to a bratty 16 year old girl who is so self righteous.... Ugh I just couldn't. I wanted to slap Pru almost immediately. I hoped it would get better once the magical element was introduced, but it didn't, and I couldn't look past the MCs attitude.
Oh man. This book took me quite a while to get into. Like 200+ pages. I back burnered it and was thiiiiiiis close to DNFing it. But I was determined to finish this behemoth of a book. Once Hunt was introduced, I was HOOKED. It was hard to put down at times. One day I read for nearly six hours. My ONLY gripe is the lack of seggs. This book gave me blue balls multiple times. Come on SJM, this is adult fiction. How can your YA have sex but not your adult?! UGH. But goddamn it was well written. I didn't expect the twists in the last quarter of the book AT ALL.
My review is low because there's just something about this genre that I don't like. Maybe because I'm a 32 year old woman, I can't relate to young boys coming of age stories. And there's something about reading about a 16 year old boy's urge to masturbate that turns me completely off. I wanted to stop listening to this audiobook at 82% because of it. But I pushed through. The ending was very sweet, but it felt too rushed. The best thing about this book was that it was narrated by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
This book was major MEH. I wanted to like Snow, but I just couldn't will myself to do it. It was interesting to see how the monster was created, but I couldn't muster the empathy to care about him at all. Definitely my least favorite of the series. What I really want is a book about the 50th Hunger Games. I really need to know how Haymitch won his games.
As someone who grew up reading Calvin & Hobbes, and I own three collections, I was so interested in the premise of this book. I suppose I didn't read the blurb well enough because I was a little disappointed. This book is written in an odd style, almost like a journal entry, versus actual dialogue. Once I got past the formatting, I enjoyed the story, but it did not end the way I expected.
The audiobook is 100% the best way to read this book. Narrated by Newt himself, Eddie Redmayne, it gave a bit of whimsy to this “textbook” and connected it to the movie in my mind. It's a super quick listen, only 2 hours (1 hr 35 min if you listen at 1.2x speed like me). Overall quite enjoyable, although I do miss being able to see if there were illustrations in the actual book.
This was not at all what I expected from this book. But I loved it nonetheless. Just like the other Nightvale novels, it was weird and wonderful. Most of the book was set outside of Nightvale, so that was kind of refreshing actually. Learning the Faceless Old Woman's origin and how she came to be was very interesting. Also, Mara Wilson's narration was top notch, A+ audiobook experience.
Victoria, why do you like to break my heart?! I have a rule of thumb that if a books makes me cry, it'll get five stars. And this 100% gets five stars.
I went into this book thinking it would be a love story between a French girl and the Devil. While that's not exactly what happened, it was so much more. I will definitely be rereading Addie when it is officially released.
Thank you to NetGalley for this early digital copy!
This is one of the most beautifully written books I've read in a long time. The audiobook was masterfully recorded, the narrator is brilliant and I highly recommend the audio experience. I am crying as I type this review because this book punched me right in the feels. The last few chapters were a whirlwind of emotion for me, I cried at least three times.
