4.5 stars. Love the h. Unlike most Betty Neels h, she spoke back at the evil rich relations. She even threatened to hit one with her rolling pin.
In fact, I would have given this 5 stars if it weren't for the vandalism. It was the culprit's accent that got me. I do realize Betty Neels is old-fashioned, where you always have the working class and the Quality but somehow the fact that the vandals do not speak the Queen's English doesn't sit well with me. It's as if criminals are always from the lower class.
Typical light-hearted Emma Darcy. Not actually a 4 star since the epilogue kinda ruined it for me. It was a surprise since I usually enjoy having a peek into the MCs HEA but this book's epilogue was just crammed there in the end. As if Emma Darcy had written a much longer story but then tthe editor told her to cut down the number of pages
This book is a mess. Thin plots, cardboard villains, and unlikeable, inconsistent MCs.
I enjoyed other books by this author and I can't believe how this one can be such a disappointment. I wanted to give this 1 star but considering I got this for free I guess it would have been too harsh. I'd be mad as heck, though, if I had paid for this.
3.5 stars. Essie Summers is my new favorite author. Modern harlequin authors should learn from Essie Summers on how to write a book without relying on trivial misunderstandings which could have been resolved if the MCs would just talk to each other. Unfortunately this book was not as good as her other books I've read. The drama near the end felt too contrived, what with landslide and miraculous survival.
A really cute fantasy short story. This reminds me of my childhood stories, giving me the warm feeling.
I decided to read this because it was the first of a series. Little did I know that it's a spinoff of another series.
Quickly decided to dnf this early on (around 3rd or 4th chapter, I think) because obviously if you haven't read the other series you'd be lost since there were too many siblings mentioned in the beginning. And I know this is fiction but almost all of them are titled or married into titles?? Come on.
Melissa Erin Jackson is one of my favorite authors and the second book of this series has only entrenched her place in my bookshelves. I love the way she fleshed out her characters and the setting was also clearly described. Her writing is fun and I really enjoyed the whole time I was reading it. The only bad thing from this series is that I have to wait 6 months for the next book.
This series has something that somehow makes you keep reading to the next book. I got annoyed with so many minor errors almost each book has but this one has a really glaring one. The previous book stated that Nelly was having her seventy-fourth birthday but suddenly she's sixty-three in this book??
Yet I continued on to the next book...
update: at first I rated this 3 stars but then I saw the current rating was 4.12 which it definitely did NOT deserve so I decided to knock it down to 2 stars.
3 stars for Devil in Winter fans. Very weak as a standalone but who cares?? It has Sebastian and Evie in it!! Since I'm a sucker for them, I, and the other fans, will definitely read any book that features them and boy, how the publisher is fully aware of this. At this point, they're just milking Sebastian and the rest of the Wallflowers characters until the fans have had enough.
For non-Kleypas readers, this book only rates 2 stars, so only read this when you have nothing to do and are just looking for some random books to fill your time. Do not expect much from this book but please don't let this book discourage you from trying out Kleypas' other (much better) books
