DNF. But it probably deserves another chance. I'm adding it to my 2nd chance challenge list.
Great story, sad its done. likely to re-read the entire series again. I'm likely to re-write this review too as I feel the series deserves a thoughtful review.
better than the movie
This was my first manga book, once I got used to the reading direction I couldn't put my iPad down. I read through the story very quickly.
I would have given this 5-stars but the reading experience on kindle was wonky. I found it disrupted me to have to adjust the view just so I could read the dialog. This occurred toward the second half of the book more than the first because there seemed to be more dialog. In the middle of the screen. This would crop the dialog off in awkward places.
Yes, it was different than what I'd expected.
I knew before diving in that it's be different. It wasn't what I'd expected. I wished it would've cast light on any of the possible mysteries in the main story. But it didn't. If it did I missed it.
The odd thing is that I don't dislike the story. I liked reading about her world. She is a unique spirit. She's a “namer of things” which I liked, and her odd way was engaging. I ended up forgetting about kvothe and wondering more about what was going on under the university long before it came to be a university. My questions don't get answered. And, still it was okay.
I find myself really respecting this author‘s creative choice. He shares his reason in the author notes. That alone was an interesting read.
To me, this is a beautiful story that is cut off from Kvothe's world. At least that's what it seems like.
I don't think we'll get another king killer story, I really wish we would though. This was a wonderful world that was nearly completely created.
Couldn't put it down
A rich layered psychological thriller.
An invisible hand manipulating a team of explorers drawing them deep into dangerous places. Mmmmm Numnumnum.
Hypnosis, planted suggestions, intellectual brainiacs reduced to insanity, savagery or madness. Yes yes yes!
The story had me in its grip. I couldn't put it down. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Bought the 2nd book immediately. I hope it holds me all the way through the next two books. Can't wait to see how this unfolds.
Gave me pacman fever
Brought me back to the 80's arcade adventure, D&D and early computer hacking. I'll re read this one when I want to feel nostalgic again. Vector games ruled.
happy I gave it a second chance
Pros
I really enjoyed the authors writing. The way he introduces the magic system and builds the world was entirely enjoyable.
I love the omnipresence of powerful things lingering, waiting, perhaps watching.
I enjoyed the pacing, things are revealed nice and slow pace and cleverly introduced.
I love how the author writes the life of this character. It's familiar in the way and it is unpredictable, sometimes meandering, much like the way you might hear someone recounting events that happened in their life.
Cons
This is purely personal, but I really don't care for traveling troops, bards, minstrels etc, they just annoy me, I don't know why. Silly but it was something I had to get over and I'm glad I did. I have come to really love the Adema Rue and how that culture defined the main characters life.
Like some of the other reviews I've read, I agree that this story wanders and leaves me wondering why are we here/ what's the purpose of this deviation? When it happened for the second time, I dismissed it as something the author probably did on purpose to reflect how a story would actually be recounted - in a roundabout and somewhat disorganized way. Who knows if that's true?
Intriguing story
The less that is known about the story the better it will be for you.
Need a qualifier? This is one of only a few scot-fi books to receive top honors in the three most prestigious science fiction writing awards.
