Baloney detection kit is all we need to live better lives both as individuals and as a society. It is the only safe-guard we have against human atrocities of any kind, be it stupidity, ignorance or tyranny!
This overlaps in some parts with other books of the author. This includes some fine tips and anecdotes regrading intricacies of remote work.
Also conveying that they are cool doing whatever they do, super cool almost, with extra points on how to get as cool them, and the fact that it might not work for most people.
The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win
Amazing how much I could relate with main characters, it helped a lot to see IT operations from a different angle.
It was rather short, I am kinda used to living in a SciFi universe, Asimov's Foundations, Clarks' Ramas and Heinlein's Moon colony in Moon is a harsh mistress was portrayed in much more detail.
But nevertheless, it was a good read, had some strange but well tought ideas about society governance and it had the Heilineian touch to it.
[deep breath] it was a hard read, not that it was not well-written (it is captivating), but that I would find myself cringing while unintentionally imagining myself under the circumstances that characters went through. It reminded me of [b:Man's Search for Meaning 4069 Man's Search for Meaning Viktor E. Frankl https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1535419394l/4069.SY75.jpg 3389674] a bit.
Convinces you through logic and sheer repetition of some facts that indexing is the best long term investment plan there is.
It was my first experience with [a:Heinlein Robert a. 4836500 Heinlein Robert a. http://www.goodreads.com/assets/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg] and I should say I am pleased, Looking forward to read more, perhaps [b:Stranger in a Strange Land 350 Stranger in a Strange Land Robert A. Heinlein http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1156897088s/350.jpg 908211] would be next. The story begins with a slow pace, describing characters and general atmosphere of society, and then keeps a steady acceleration in pacing and events towards the end.Reading first few chapters, being new to author style and characters I was OK, getting through rest of Book One I was like whatever, And then in Book Three I couldn't stop reading it. The final chapters were well written and gave a good farewell with characters. It was a pleasant reading. I am gonna miss Mike!
This is a self-help book, I don't know why I expected otherwise, it has the same tone and mind-numbing tails to hammer the anecdotes home! I gave it 4 chapters before giving up.
A good read on Big Data, which provides a comprehensible background on digitization and datification.
Although I have read most of reference books mentioned in Decisive, Yet I hadn't put together practical techniques and advices for every day decision making. That is what this book had for me, a model (WRAP) for day to day application and constant practice.
This was our text book for “Introduction to Linguistics” course.
It was a good read, I almost enjoyed reading it for the final exams, which is a rare thing to happen :)
As always both informative and amusing, hearing him slide witty remarks in middle of sentences and serious stuff is fun!
As a work of fiction, it is terrible book, cliche characters, forced drama and suspense, lack of penmanship in describing dynamics (hence resorting to outright naming them with overt adjectives). As a non-fiction self-helpy psychology book (which it so tries to be) it is nothing more than psudo-scientific, psudo-profound, new-age tale of spirituality.
You could summarize this (and answer the question in the title) into: due to extractive political and (subsequently) economical institutions. But then you would miss most of the fun in reading thorough examples and detailed rhetoric of why that is the case.
Good wrap-up on aspects of defection, pressures and various forms of security. Most of the examples are from areas we don't usually consider security or take seriously.
A key takeaway: the cost is defection is often born by all members of the relevant society, but on the other hand eliminating defection is not feasible, a healthy amount of defection in societies is more realistic from cost/freedom perspective and also provides fuel for change.
Clear definition and exemplifications of two systems, two species and two selves sheds light on various aspects of our decision making and rationality.
I have plan to re read this, few month in the future.
This was cool, not any deeper than books on cognitive biases and error (e.g Thinking Fast & Slow), but full of good, tangible examples.
In essence knowing you are biased isn't often sufficient, you need to counter it per case, and this book covers some well known examples of such biases and counter measures.
This book was basically my introduction to SciFi novels. I am, as I always been, a fan of science fiction, Hard SF rather that Space Opera.
And this is -in my opinion- as Hard as it gets in SciFi. Nothing gets in the way of detailed exploration of an unknown alien world like Rama.
Characters are well drawn, by the end of the book you feel like a member of the main exploration team and you know major characters by heart.
The fact that there is no major plot twist is amazing, this means you can't get spoiled with this book, and consequently you can read it several times and still enjoy it!
