I give nothing away by saying this is a story about falling in love (re: see the title), but it's so much more than that. The book covers a year in the lives of some characters with...a pretty traumatic history, and the author takes full advantage of that to explore interior and magical worlds. This is a slow burning romance that feels less like a love story and more like a mystery/drama/adventure/comedy with plenty of occult/magic references, fantastical creatures, and violence to keep things interesting and fun. The love story brewing underneath it all is super relatable. At times sweet and sumptuous, and at times intense and frustrating - as can be the case in real life. The slow burny-ness also makes it so that when the romance turns spicy, its even more enjoyable.
The banter between characters had me cackling out loud, the rhythm/pacing was great, and the writing was very well done.
Were there plot holes? Very few, but none that made the reading less enjoyable.
What was not enjoyable at all were the authors' notes at the beginning of almost every chapter. The notes were never more than a few sentences but I would have preferred them to be annotated as footnotes and placed at the end of the book. I've never read a fanfic before and never read the Harry Potter books (utter heresy, I'm know!) but I did watch the movies so I had some context and I felt like that was enough. Maybe if you read all the books, you might find them useful? To me though, utter distraction.
I normally find slow burning romance boring as hell but this turned out to be an unexpectedly wondrous and heart pounding read. I was 100% invested in the characters, there were so many enjoyable twists and turns with all the strange situations the characters kept finding themselves in. This is definitely something I would read again, and I'd love to read more from this author.
Excuse any typos (if any), I can't spell for shit :)
