Their relationship was cute and all but this really wasnt for me because I haven't ever watched any sort of reality dating so I wasnt into all that at all but that's just my situation. My main gripe with the story was that as an indian if you changed the name of mc dev to Dave and made him white there wouldn't be any difference in his character so I felt the characterization of both the mcs was very shallow.
This was a riveting read. Reading about two souls finally come together and experience love and acceptance, something they both desperately crave but had in short supply all their lives, felt poignant and heartwarming but most importantly this book was also honest as well as heartwarming. that's a difficult line to toe but it was done superbly well in this.
This one was kind of a page-Turner for me which generally doesn't happen with rom-com for me often. Get a life, chloe brown is still my fave rom com but this book was lovely too.
2.5 Thoroughly average! If you've read romances before there is nothing new in this book. not a single original dialogue that you wouldn't have read before. As a consequece There are many better versions of this book out there. There is just so much telling and not even a little bit of showing. The Author says the MC is a charismatic guy well we dont see that anywhere. This book has fanfiction level of depth to it in that sense. Telling only works if these chracters had been fleshed out in some canon literature and then the reader would take it from there. I just decided to put all the flaws aside and finished the story only because it was easy to read and the MCs were not so annoying that you couldn't bear to read another word about them.
I haven't felt this ecstatic reading a book in a while. I loved The Martian but Project Hail Mary surpassed that for me. Good Good Good !
This book has made a forever home in my heart because of its musicality and absolutely beautiful prose.
He's one of my favorite comedians but this book is just a dud. If you dont read it you wont miss anything. It's just a tegurgitatons of his specials imho.
2.5/5 The ingredients were all there for a good murder mystery whodunnit - creepy and claustrophobic atmosphere, multiple suspects with motive to kill, loads of secrets threatening to be revealed but this book falls a little flat.
I could guess the secrets halfway of 3 out of the 4 pov characters so my mind wasn't blown really which is the #1 thing I want out of a thriller. I also didn't like the characters much at all. Jules was so self-centred. I thought I'd like Charlie but he turned out to be a spineless POS. Hannah was just so hungry to be desired from rando males it made me roll my eyes. Olivia is a hot-mess but she's only 19 so she's the only ones that gets a bit of a pass. I love flawed characters but these people aren't flawed they are just miserable people. I'm only giving it 2.5 only because I still turned the pages to see who actually had died. I've DNF'ed thrillers before. I don't understand the hype. This is as average as average gets.
I have not read many short story collections but even then I knew that the book I held was written by a master of her craft. The characters that inhabit these stories feel like they enter your head fully formed even if you have only read a page of their story and that in itself is praise-worthy. I am still trying to find the right words for how masterfully she has explored the themes of this book. Suffice it to say that I will most definitely be reading more of Evans. I can't get enough of her voice and you should definitely read this.
really enjoyed reading this for many many reasons.
1. Reading is an excursion into the world that a character inhibits and it's
a really wonderful wonderful experience to go into the world of a character as fully
realized as May Attway is. She captivated my imagination from the first chapter itself.
2. as a tree-hugging nature enthusiast, I was delighted to google the various trees she talks about throughout the story.
3. the beautifully subtle, quiet, meditative and introspective prose of this novel.
4. The writing is also so astutely observational that I highlighted many passages in this book. perhaps the biggest sign of a great book (to me).
5. her father's memorial tree research Chapters were always a highlight. They had my heart.
This whole book was a joy to read.
I don't even remember how I came across this book but really really glad I did.
Wanted to reread this one because i thought i might be able to appreciate it more since i am a full grown up now and all but my opinion remains unchanged. I still didn't like reading about characters whose main traits are self-sabotaging behaviours, shrugging every three sentences, and saying “I don't know” 24*7. None of the side chracters were fleshed out at all. just archetypes. three stars are for Rooney's style of writing. Zero stars for creating a relationship where there is miscommunication just for the sake of drama.
This was an unexpectedly amazing re read because when i first read this book in 2020 I was left a little underwhelmed by the exploration of politics and the over idealisticness of the chracter's outlook was a bit of let down for me but reading it today i was purely able to tap into the whole escapism part of a romance like this. Focusing on just the relationship turned this one into a real page turner for me when previously i wasnt a fan of this book. So i feel like i can't rate it out of 5.
3.75
I can see 16 year old teen detectives obsessed me giving this book five stars but now i relate more to the older sibling chracter and can't condone the stupid shenangins the young'ns get up to in order to advance the plot. also i had been listing to Album Guts by Olivia rodrigo these past few days and the vibe of that album elevated this book's reading experience quite a bit. Still a good mystery novel and if youve never been exposed to these tropes maybe even a bangin' one.
Truly moving. an amazing (quick) read and I think it would have been majorly influential had I read it in college. Pausch's optimism and resilience in the face of adversity are truly inspiring, and his message of pursuing your dreams and making the most of your time on earth is something that will resonate with everyone.
I picked up this book and didn't put it down until I finished it. That is the magic of literature for me.
Thank you Maya Angelou.
Reading romances to dull the pain somewhat. If you're very into this genre you'll love it but for me halfway through the book I realized that this was just average. The friendship between the mcs really didnt feel deep at all so I didnt wanna keep turning the pages as I usually do because of character's inner thoughts. I finished it still but this was not fully it
don't really know how to rate this. You will love it if you have some idea what the poems are about but if you go in blind expecting something else you probaly won't like it. It delivers greatly on what it sets out to do
As someone who has not read a lot of true crime, i do not how this book stands against the rest in the genre so i am not sure how to rate it. Three star rating because I just remember how chaotic I felt the structure was. This book does what a lot of non-fiction does. It jumps back and forward through time. Now, with standard non-Fiction, this can make the book tedious or complicated, but overall, I can keep up with the events of the story. With true crime, it is a bit harder, as there are a myriad of dates, locations, victims, investigators, etc., that we are keeping tracking of on top of the timeline. I constantly found myself getting out of the flow state of reading because it was quite difficult to keep track of all the key pieces of information provided in this book, simply because of the scattered way in which it was pieced together. Which brings me to the overall structure of this book which bounced all over the place. In fact, I would say there was very little structure overall to the book, which made it hard to follow but i was still able to connect with it. Looking forward to searching about more true crimes which could be 5 star reads.
It is getting to the point where it is becoming impossible to talk about everything that happened because there is so much happening in the story arcs of each and every character. (good problem to have imo). I have so much to talk about yet also so much that I can't spoil. This book get 5 stars solely on the basis of the quality of the Sanderlanche that hits us in the last 200 pages. Additionally, It's not all character development. Indeed, most of it is occurring during really fantastic scenes of action or during inopportune times. The momentum is maintained. And then there's a whole squad of flying, storm-riding heroes. Matter-altering women, master illusionists, blade dancers, immortal assassins, gods, and my personal favorite... the cognitive realm itself. There is so so much to love in these books that if i put it all down the length of my review will start to rival the length of Sanderson books. To sum it up : The book is brilliant. read it.
I am completely in love with Murakami's prose. always have been from the first time I picked one of his books years ago. His writing style pulls me effortlessly into the narrative like no other author's does. It makes me relive the sense of awe I had as a child when I was picking up books for the first time and understanding just how evocative words could be, How an author could create an ambience just with words, a world that I would just want to escape into and how magical a feeling is that.
I don't think any review of mine could do this book justice. Baldwin's intelligence is so provoking and his sentences so elegant that words will most definitely fail me. He says in a single paragraph what most books fail to say in a hundred pages and there are many such paragraphs in the book.
I first read this in September 2021 and I rated it 3 stars because I was too focused on why she divorced her husbands and why she chose Monique and I was looking for answers to those questions and the answers weren't really as evocative as I was hoping them to be. The book's best parts on my first read wer where young Evelyn creates these narratives around sticky situations that the press just laps up. On this reread this book fared a bit better because I put emphasis on the relationship between Evelyn and the love of her life and saw its beauty whereas the first time around I couldn't ignore that aspects of that relationship were underdeveloped and hence it didn't have an impact on me.
