Short stories are typically not my cup of tea, but these were very good. While not necessary to read for the Sun Eater Saga, they do provide nice backgrounds for the politics of the Empire, the devastation of the war, and they flesh out some of the minor characters.

Amazing...simply amazing.
The characters, the plot, the prose.....the cooking (if ya know, ya know).
Ken Liu has created a masterpiece--3 epic volumes, with one last volume to go.
I have no idea how this is going to end, only that it is going to be epic.
Do yourself a favor and read this series--you will not regret it.

Starts off slow and muddles about a bit. The twists and reveals at the end ring a bit hollow, but the execution of Poirot putting together the pieces and confronting the murderer is flawless as always.
3.75 Stars.

Perhaps the greatest piece of historical fiction ever written. Grand, intricate plot, fantastic characters, and as historically accurate as one could expect from a book about feudal Japan set almost five hundred years ago.
Clavell, who also wrote on the greatest WWII movies ever (The Great Escape), has created a work that is easy to visualize and that plays in your head like an epic movie--sprawling action, politics, and even a dash of romance.
It had been a number of years since I had read this last and I am marveled at how good it is.

The first Hecule Poirot mystery....story written in 1916!
Over 100 years old, and it is perhaps the best debut novel ever written. Poirot is in peak form from the get go.
Classic mystery, and the prose and plot hold up today, a century later!
