This book was okay. It kept me interested throughout, but I have no desire to pursue the series further. I felt like there was so much it could have done with the day of the dead celebration, but that was barely even a factor in the story. None of the twists actually surprised me. I also felt the love story was terribly fast. It didn't seem like it had time to become love at all really. The villains were basically incompetent proven by how many times people escaped from them in this book, making it really not seem as threatening as it was supposed to.
The big thing I did enjoy though was that her skills she learned from movies kept coming up in ways to help her save herself.
Overall though, I would not recommend.
A week later and I still don't know how to feel about this read. It was gorgeous and lyrical, and saying it's haunting would not be hyperbole because a week has past and I still have shudders over certain scenes. It was the kind of book that gripped me and now won't leave my head, but I truly can't say if I liked it.
I can't even put into words how much I love this book. THAT is how you end a series!
What a fantastic book about mental illness and resilience. I was not expecting the feeling of warmth this book left me with. It unflinching in its depiction of having severe mental health difficulties and in loss. Yet it was deeply hopeful. Full recommendations on this one
Neil Gaiman is a Halloween staple for me. His children's horror is incredible. This book made me care so deeply for each and every character, and the end genuinely made me cry. I loved it. It's a delightful horror twist on the Jungle Book and absolutely worth a read!
I adore Greg Rucka. His writing is constantly wonderful. He injects a warmth into his stories that make them fun and emotional in wonderful ways. The action was great! You can't beat space pirate adventures. This is the book I hand people who are skeptical about my love for Cyclops.
This is one of the best Batman stories by one of my favorite Batman writers! I cried, a lot. It was so moving and surprising
I love Harley. They just don't get better than her. It was so fun to have a story starring her. I enjoyed every page!
this is a really unusual book and I love that about it. I adore the characters and I can't wait to read more about them!
A great 3rd book! The first half was uneven but the second half amped everything up in a fun heist plot that I am here for!
I loved this book so much. Everything about it was truly perfection. The dynamic between the four questers was exactly what I love about Percy Jackson in general. This book was thrilling and it just made me happy!
This book is a gift to young therapists and has gotten me through more than a few crises of confidence as I learn to do this work
I love Amy. She is my “spirit guide” in so many ways. I take her words to heart. And she makes me laugh till I hit the floor which is a wonderful trait in any book!
I haven't read comics in years, but I've recently started to get back into them, and this one has me hooked! I am so proud of the creators for making this story, for making this character. More please!
This was a perfect comic. I loved every moment! The character bears were fantastic and it had the right blend of comedic and dramatic beats throughout. The art is also stunning!
It was an interesting concept, and as it is a first novel, I feel like the author has potential. But as a book itself it really didn't live up to its own challenges. Though I love the idea of 14 different perspectives, some of them just fell flat–the bench POV was creepy, honestly. I also had a hard time believing these 12 different people were that involved in the romance of other people for over a year.
I did enjoy Gabe and his brother and best friend. They were a sweet bromance trio.
Otherwise...not so much.
It would be hard to put into words how much I loved this book. The characters have all grown and developed so much since the first one, and I love every twist and turn! It's incredible! One of the most impressive thing about this series to me is that the author continually enters new characters, and makes them so believable and human that I love them instantly as much as I do the characters that were there from the beginning. That is so hard to do, and often series get bogged down by new characters and all you want is to return to the main ones. In this I was actually excited for every plot line (and there were many going on at once).
This book was flawless and the ending left me weeping! I can't wait to see what happens next...
Would rate 2.5 if good reads allowed. This book felt award thirsty and I don't necessarily think it earned the emotional resonance it was going for
I love love love this graphic novel with every fiber of my soul. I came in expecting this funny little heroes and villains comedy and came away with my heart feeling so many emotions. It was genuinely sweet and sad in the best way. Blackheart may be one of my favorite graphic novel characters of all time. So beautiful. Fully recommend
I absolutely loved this book. It made me want to hop on a plane and just go. Fascinating. I recommend it for every travel or positive psychology lover.
No Spoiler Review:
This was my first foray into Markus Zusak's writing and I was not disappointed. The story was fascinating, well paced, and poetic. It chooses not to take the easy way out of emotionally charged situations. In that way the novel is quite daring. This is a rougher read for that reason also, so don't come looking for a by the pool book here. The characters are compelling. They feel like real people, full of flaws and emotions.
Sometimes the scenes weren't as emotionally impacting as I think they should have been, and I have mixed feelings about the ending (more on this below the spoil line), but ultimately it was a wonderful book with a great message. Definitely worth the read.
**Spoiler Review!*****
There are so many wonderful scenes in the book. I love the messages and the characters he meets because of them. My favorites were the priest and the Christmas light family.
That being said, I did see his friend's being the last messages coming, but despite that it was still the perfect way for the story to go.
My other thing was, sometimes I couldn't understand how he figured out what to do for people. It often made sense, yes, but sometimes he seemed supernaturally gifted in figuring these things out.
Now the twist end. Huh. I spent the whole ending going “What...?” which can be good. I do understand what ultimately happened, but I think it deflated the story a bit. It was a stranger. There were no clues to figure out who it was, because it wasn't anyone he could have known. It was a strange choice to make. I did wonder if that stranger was supposed to be Markus Zusak in a sort of Lemony Snicket twist, but even still. And the whole “am I real?” thing. How did someone manipulating Ed convince him that he wasn't real? That end twist did not work for me.
