Dawn by Octavia E. Butler is my first finished read of 2023! It was my first time reading this piece of work, and I really enjoyed it.
I have a phobia of aliens, which I've mentioned in the past. I was very creeped out going into this book, but I couldn't put the book down once I started (I finished it in two days!)
This book explores themes of gender, society, humanity - and what that means, sexuality, and I'm sure I'm missing some.
I enjoyed the world building. <spoiler>The aliens and the ship were all so creatively designed.</spoiler> This story just had so many great working parts, and it all came together to make a creepy but wonderfully written story.
I knocked off .5 stars because of how heteronormative the story was, with all the males trying to find a female within their groups to "hook up" with. Someone pointed out that was a unrealistic that everyone was so heteronormative, and I agree
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4.5/5 Stars
I'm giving this a 3 ½ stars but rounding down to 3 stars because I loved the art but I didn't like how the magic system wasn't really explained! The story was okay, it was a little predictable. I wish there was more back story on the mother and I wish the last few chapters had a little more explanation. All in all it was an okay comic book
Rounding up from 2.5 stars
I didn't like that the main character was drunk when she hooked up with the main love interest that one time. I also don't like how the love interest cusses at the main character so much. I'm just not a fan of the love interest, he rubs me the wrong way. I shouldn't have read this back to back with another spicy romance novel because the last thing I read over shadows this story by a lot.
This is a comic dedicated to Wonder Woman and it's a view into the future! What does Wonder Woman look like in the future ? Three stories of what Wonder Woman looks like in the future; Nubia, Wonder Girl/Brazilian Wonder Woman, and Immortal Wonder Woman! The art in the comic book is stunning, all of it!~ Absolutely breathtaking!
(SPOLIERS BELOW____)
Nubia ★★★/3½ Stars
Nubia fights Grail over some enchanted artifacts, these artifacts (when pieced together) have the ability to summon gods, minor gods , as well as do other powerful things. Nubia asks her aunt for help and ends up getting help from someone big towards the end! This comic was okay, the most exciting part is when Nubia tells Grail to “fuck around and find out!”. I really wanted to like this more but it just wasn't very exciting. I really love the art here, I especially love the depiction of Nubia's beautiful hair.
Brazilian Wonder Woman ★★★★/4 Stars
This is our first introduction to Brazilian Wonder Woman! In this story Wonder Woman, Yara Flor, is trying to get to the underworld so she can find her sister and so she can save her sister from Hades and the underworld. I really enjoyed the ups and downs of this comic, I loved and passion and flaws that Yara displays. This was definitely worth reading!
Future State: Wonder Woman/Superman ★★★★/4 Stars
This was interesting and really creative. I enjoyed this story because we get to see more of Yara and we meet a new Superman
I had really high hopes for this book but I just didn't love it, I barely liked it. It goes at a very slow place, I just remember wishing something entertaining would happen but the writing is just so slow. I was happy that it had queer representation (as seen with the main characters two mothers). The relationship the main character ends up having herself has no depth, it's really unfortunate. I plan on reading the sequel because towards the end of the book things picked up and became more interesting,
This story is like cyber punk in Mexico City and that was new and cool. I wish we got more descriptors relating to the futuristic environment but I didn't mind it so much because of the amazing clan building when it came to the different kinds of vampires. I really loved Domingo, he was so sweet that I got teary eyed while reading. Domingo is definitely my favorite character. I basically have an issue with the main character being 23 and her love interest being 17 and that's why I gave this 4 stars instead of 5.
EDIT- 2 hours later //
So I give this 5 out of 5 stars because I've been introduced to a new perspective!
This book is about who we identify with, both of these people are trying to survive and they're trying to take this plant back to earth but I needed to be reminded that this book was through the perspective of North. Of course she's going to seem like the hero but as the story progresses you start to question if she even IS the hero or not?
—–
It was a bit difficult to rate this for me because I wasn't sure if I should give it a 4 Stars or a 5 Stars so I decided on a 4.5 Stars! There was only one part in the story that I disliked and that's why I took .5 Stars off!
This was a beautifully made book, I love the cover art on the book on the dusk jacket and underneath the dust jacket. The art is stunning and the color palette is just gorgeous. I like how the chapters were split up, the panels and images looked really nice with the large roman numerals overlaid on them, it was very dramatic and I enjoyed it.
I loved the Guardian system (which is the AI assistant) and how it worked, I think it's interface was really interesting and that was something I definitely appreciated! I loved the characters and the world building.
Overall this is definitely worth a read! Check your local library or your local book store!

"Emergency Skin" by N.K. Jemisin is a short story or novella from the short story collection, "Forward" published by Am*zon. A scout or explorer travels back to Earth to collect information, the danger lies in that Earth was destroyed by climate change centuries ago. When the explorer discovers that there is still some humanity left on Earth, he worries about how dangerous they are. He's instructed to get off Earth and survive any encounters. Will the soldier make it back home intact? Or was the mission more than the explorer could handle?
This was amazing. I am blow away by the fact that Ms. Jemisin created these characters, this story, and the world building within 29 pages. I'm not going to spoil anything, I want everyone to read this story while only knowing what the synopsis is.
"Emergency Skin" is definitely the best short story in the "Forward" Collection published by Am*zon. It's an amazing short story, I was speechless by the ending of the story. I can't believe she wrote this in 29 pages?! Ms. Jemisin is such an amazing writer, I know this and she still manages to surprise me with her talent. I'm giving this book 5 stars out of 5.

Rafe: A Buff Male Nanny by Rebekah Weatherspoon is the first book in the "Loose Ends" series. This book is about Dr. Sloan Copeland, M.D who is a single mother to two twin daughters, Avery and Addison. Dr. Copeland needs to find a new babysitter and she gets a recommendation about a male Nanny named Rafe. Well, his references are good and he has the experience so he might be the right person for the job, it also helps that he's very handsome and fit. Will Dr. Copeland and Rafe keep things strictly professional, or will they pursue each other due to mutual attraction?
This romance/erotica felt cozy and wholesome for the most part, it's advertised as low angst and I definitely agree with that assertion. Although the story was cute, it wasn't one of my favorite romance stories but I'm glad I read it, though this isn't a book I could see myself reading again. I did however like the little surprise in the epilogue. I'm a 30 year old non-binary women who is child free by choice, so it's possible that's the reason this story didn't resonate with me.
The spicy scenes were nice, I appreciate that the couple used condoms until they've been dating for a while. I'm giving the spicy scenes three chilies 🌶️🌶️🌶️ out of five chilies
Overall this romance/erotica was cute. I'm giving this 3.75 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book! I liked the world and character building throughout the book.
I gave this 5 stars because it was written, illustrated, and colored really well like all the other Saga volumes/issues before it. This volume broke my heart, I screamed out loud and sobbed and sobbed until I finally accepted what transpired. I'm hesitant to read any of the next issues, I think I'd like to wait for the next volume to come out. I'm so sad, I'm trying to remind myself that this story is worth finishing even if it makes me sad sometimes (most of the time).
I enjoyed the art in this comic so much! It's to the point of wanting printings of the different individual issue covers! I need to give the book 4 stars based on the art alone. I don't think I'll give it the final star because I think the story needed to be fleshed out a bit more. For example, I think that the storyline about Akai being murdered by the police needed to be discussed more, nothing happened as far as justice or punishments. Akai got to live again because of his mother so that is an ending that I really like.
This is a horror, thriller, slice of life manga and I'm not the biggest fan of slice of life. That being said this was entertaining enough and I enjoyed the increase in encroaching creepiness as the manga goes on. If you're looking for something creepy with a slow burn, this is it!

The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong is the first book in the young adult series "Darkest Powers" by the same author. Chloe Saunders starts seeing ghosts and suddenly her life is turned upside down within the next 24 hours. She ends up in a group home for unstable teens but there are things that she doesn't know about the group home, her peers, and even herself. The group home might be more than it seems, will Chloe figure out what the deal with this group home is and why she's been seeing ghosts?
I don't think this story is as interesting as it could be, but it still ends up being better than average. The majority of the story takes place in the group home and the repetitive scenery was a bit annoying and it wasn't as entertaining as the author aimed it to be.
I first read this when it was released in 2008 and I liked the story more back then, but this was still okay. I remembered about half of the details about this first book from the first time read it 16 years ago, but there were some details that I forgot all together. I think going into this story semi-unknowing means that I could somewhat experience the story in a similar way to the way I did 16 years ago.
I think this story was okay, I remember liking it a lot more when it first released but around that time I was in the book's target demographic, so it makes sense that I liked this young adult book back when I was a young adult. Rereading this was an interesting experience because I didn't remember all of the things that took place in this novel so some of the surprises and reveals were still surprising to me. Overall, this was an okay story with a good plot twist.

The Drifting Classroom by Kazuo Umezu is a horror manga from the 70's about an entire elementary school (with the students, staff, and teachers included) disappearing. When parents and the police come to investigate a giant explosion at the elementary school, all they find is a giant gaping hole in the ground where the school used to be. Meanwhile, the students, staff, teachers, and school are all transported somewhere, but where? The main character Sho, a 6th grader, must fight to survive alongside his friends. All hell starts to break lose, will Sho and his friends survive? Will he ever make his way back to his family?
This manga had so much going on and most of it was unpredictable. I don't want to say too much because spoiling it would ruin part of the story. I will say that all hell starts to break lose by the time the end of the first volume comes along. I'm so excited about future reveals.
The Drifting Classroom is delightfully creepy and I would suggest volume 1 to all my horror comic/manga friends. I did take issue with how long the "story" took to start, other than that I liked everything else about this manga. I'm giving this 4.5 stars out of 5.

Thank you so much to NETGALLEY and the PUBLISHER for my arc (advanced reader's copy) of this book.
This story is about Venus, a Witcher (a person who controls a type of magic) and her family of Witchers. Venus is a powerful brewer and her and her mother sell illegal potions to people for money. At around 25% of the way through the book someone <spoiler>kills Venus' mother.</spoiler> Eventually Venus is offered a chance at revenge, will she take it?
The pacing in this book felt slow and I had a hard time caring about the characters. The side characters all seemed one dimensional but I'm putting this novel on hold until the audiobook releases, so I can't be for sure. The world building felt very heavy but not in a good way.
The world building was interesting but the way it was delivered felt really clunky. At the beginning of each chapter there was exposition in the form of a newspaper article, an email, or some other source. On top of that at the beginning of every chapter, there was exposition littered throughout the conversations and through the narrator's comments. The information overload became too much.
What I read of this book was just okay, I'm going to DNF for now and then finish it once the audiobook is released.
DNF until later date.
Wow, this was really spicy! There were some parts that I didn't care for, like when the sex was too rough. I.E - He tells her that he's going to “take” anal from her if she doesn't give it to him and that made my skin crawl. Father Bell also talked about God a lot, I understand that he's a priest but I wish we got more scenes of him just doing non priest related things (other than fking Poppy!).
I'm an atheist and I still really enjoyed this story. I took a star off for the things mentioned above. The story even made me teary-eyed towards the end. I can't wait to read the rest of the series !

Radio Silence by Alyssa Cole is a dystopian romance and it was surprisingly good. For some reason I didn't think dystopian and romance genres went together (I guess I wasn't paying attention while reading The Hunger Games.) I thought this was cute and some what action packed, the story kept my attention for the duration of the book.
Arden, a Black woman, and John, a Korean man, were roommates in college when suddenly all the power went out, technology stopped working, and water stopped running (no one seems to know why). John comes up with the idea to walk the 100 miles from the college to his family's home with Arden, but on the way they come upon some trouble. It's John's brother, Gabriel, who helps Arden and John out of a dangerous situation. Now Arden, John, Gabriel, and Maggie (John and Gabe's teen sister) are tasked with surviving the apocalypse. Gabriel is stubborn, mean, and treats Arden like she doesn't know anything. How long can they last going at each other's throats? Or will they eventually notice each other's softer side?
I think some of the decisions the character's made were really not well thought out. One example is at the beginning of the book, John and Arden make some questionable decisions and that ends up with them being in danger. Later on in the story, Maggie makes a really silly decision and that ends up putting the entire family at risk to being harmed in the apocalypse. In dystopian and apocalyptic stories, I expect the characters to try harder to live.
The spicy scenes were enjoyable and I liked that condoms were used, because that's what makes sense in an apocalypse. I'm giving the spicy scenes three point five chilies 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 out of five chilies
Overall this dystopian romance was cute. I'm giving this 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed this book, I really loved all the commentary on “boys clubs”, racism, and bigotry. I'm excited to read the sequels to this!

Mind of my Mind is the second book in the Patternist series by Octavia E. Butler. I think it's my least favorite out of the series, along with Patternmaster.
This is the story of a few of Doro's children, but in particular, this is the story of Doro's child Mary. From a young age Doro could tell that Mary would have immense power after she psychically transitioned so he decides that he wants to ensure her protection.
Eventually, after her transition, Mary grew to develop what's known as The Pattern, which is a psychic avenue that telepaths can use connect with each other. Mary develops this "Pattern" and then proceeds to gather some of Doro's active telepaths from around the country. After collecting a few active telepaths Mary decided to connect with lantents, people who have psychic potential but they're not active telepaths.
After Mary connects with the actives and latents, well things start to get messy. I won't spoil anything for you, I'll just say that this is honestly worth the read even if I didn't like it as much as some of the other Patternist novels.
This is my second time reading Mind of My Mind and I honestly enjoyed the story more the second time around. I gave Mind of My Mind a 4 out of 5 the first time I read it, this time I'm going to give it a 4.5 out of 5.
Interesting...
No one actually reads this to their kids, right? I didn't care too much for it, the art was cute.

Darkfever is the first book in the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. MacKayla, more commonly known as Mac, is grieving because her older sister was murdered while abroad in Ireland. Mac's sister left one clue, one enigmatic voice message. So when the criminal murder investigation halts, Mac decides to travel to Ireland to find out who murdered her sister and why. As Mac digs deeper she finds maybe an enemy or ally in the peculiar Jericho Barrons, who happens to be shadowing her. Eventually Mac discovers that she's a sidhe-seer (she-seer), someone who can see and sense the monsters on the other side of the veil. V'lane, an alpha Fae who glamours women into wanting sexual intercourse from him, also has his sights set on Mac. The one thing that Mac discovers is that she needs to get her hands on the Sinsar Dubh, a one of a kind Dark Book that has the power to control both the human world and the fae world, before anyone else finds it.
The first part of the book was really boring, things don't pick up and get more interesting in the book until after the 50% mark. This book also had some inconsistencies as well as several scenes not being explained at all. It felt like nothing relevant was happening in the first 50% of the book. We get world building when Mac learns more about the Fae world and she writes the information down in her notebook, I suppose that's okay? It feels a little like lazy writing. The first time Mac finally sees a monster up close is at the 31% mark and that felt like the story was going too slowly. When Mac sees the monster she notices that it is naked and has a large "member", for some reason the monster stares back at her and begins to stroke itself?!This was never explained "why". To be fair, I think it's okay if some things weren't explained because I understand that this first book is meant the be the beginning of a long series. I just don't understand why the monsters want to stroke themselves when they see her and that is not explained. There are a few inconsistences but I'll just share the first one I found.
"then turned out the light and fell almost immediately into a deep, dreamless sleep. Someone knocking at my door awakened me. I sat up, rubbing gritty, tired eyes that felt as if I’d just shut them seconds ago. It took me a few moments to remember where I was—in a twin bed in a chilly room in Dublin, with rain tapping lightly at the window. I’d been having a fantastic dream."
Moning, Karen Marie. Darkfever: Fever Series Book 1 (pp. 48-49). Random House Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.
So Mac starts off saying that she "fell almost immediately into a deep, dreamless sleep." only to say at the beginning of the next paragraph, "I'd been having a fantastic dream."
(TW - mention of physical assault)
I don't think the relationship between Barrons and Mac is really possible without Mac continuing to accept Barrons' physically and verbally abusive behavior, at this point. Within the first few days of knowing each other, they get into one of their many arguments. Only this time, Barrons decides to "snatch" Mac up off the couch she's sitting on, by grabbing her by the hair and neck and shoving her against a wall.
He was on me before my brain processed the fact that he was coming for me. It was the third time he’d pulled such a stunt and it was getting darned old. The man was either an Olympic sprinter or, because I’d never been jumped before, I just couldn’t get a grasp on how quickly it happens. His lunges were way faster than my instincts to react. Lips compressed, face tight with fury, he dragged me up off the couch with a hand in my hair, grabbed my throat with the other, and began walking me backward toward the wall.
Moning, Karen Marie. Darkfever: Fever Series Book 1 (pp. 77-78). Random House Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.
This is not described as consensual non-consent OR romantic behavior at all. This is described as the abuse it is. Barrons is supposed to be the main love interest but he physically attacks Mac several times in the beginning of their acquaintanceship. Towards the end of the book Barrons saves Mac and for some reason the author sort of paints this idea that it's okay to forget or that we should forget that Barrons was physically abusive towards Mac almost every time they were in each other's proximity. Barrons saves Mac and so the character is expected to be redeemed of his earlier behavior. Well I still don't like him, he's awful and abusive, I want Mac to get far away from him.
The audiobook narrator was okay, I didn't love their performance but I could stand it. Mac, the main character, is supposed to be from the United States South and so the narrator tried to use a "Southern" accent and sometimes the narrator would lose the accent for two sentences just to pick it back up in the third sentence. It was a bit distracting and took me out of the immersion of the story almost every time it happened. Someone gifted me every audiobook in this series (there was a sale at $2.99 per audiobook) so I plan on finishing this series. I think I don't mind that the book's narrators changes to new narrators starting in book 4, Dreamfever.
There were no spicy scenes in this book. All the scenes having to do with arousal had to do with monsters, fae, and creatures of the night being sexually aggressive and even almost sexually assaulting the main character by using fae glamour to make her think she "wants it". Nothing happened but I don't want to read about "almost sexual assaults" in my paranormal ROMANCES. I'm giving the spicy scenes zero -🌶️ chilies out of five chilies
Overall, I think the beginning of this book was not good, though the premise was interesting. The ending of the book is where the action and the full story started to come together, it was definitely the most interesting part of the book. I don't understand the "slow burn romance" in here because Barrons is terrible to Mac and even physically abusive to her in the days following their first meeting. That's not romantic at all. Some of the writing was also inconsistent. I'm giving this 2 out of 5 stars.
