After reading some of the other reviews, I was hesitant to read this book. In all honesty it is very different from the giver, but it is a good book.
The best way I can tell you how to read this book is to assume it takes place in another village outside of the giver village or just forget about the giver when reading this book. This book revolves around a girl that has a handicap with one of her legs, she experience loss, she grows throughout the story and learns the truth.
Edit 2022:
Due to recent events, a star will be deducted.
I was bored with this book before page 10. I stuck it out to see if it would get better, due to other books starting slow. I stuck it out and wished I didn't.
Here are some pros:
There is a person that will like this book a whole lot better than I did.
Interesting (i guess)
I just couldn't get into it.
I loved it a lot. I was in a reading slump and after reading crawl. I wanted more.
It is so hard to leave a proper review without giving spoilers. But, fabulous job. Please keep writing and creating books like this.
Thank you for getting me out of a reading slump.
Thank you for allowing me to review an copy ( even though I volunteered for it lol).
Must read more of your books. I'm obsessed now.
This books has never been my cup of tea. The underlying messages with in the book are good, I guess. Don't judge someone based on appearance and unncondtional love. They are all good messages, but sadly many are unrealistic and forgotten as we mature.
It is not a bad book to read just not my cup of tea.
I would like say congratulations on being self published, that takes strength and courage.
Honest review: In regards to this book/novella it seems to juvenile for my taste.
I have been reading the preview of it to see if it is worth the buy, to finish reading it. In my opinion, for me, I will not continue reading it due to how juvenile it sounds and a few other reasons but I will not nitpick a self published book that took the time to write and had the guts to publish it.
Example of what I am taking about:
“The were one for all and all for one , type bros.”
“This royal family was one of the happiest family in this universe. And they have all the technologies of great qualities. As the ages passed the two bros were read to take the control over their fathers throne......“
“........he believed that he had much more knowledge of keeping their societies more happier.”
“Yes the Jupiter is the largest planet and because of it beauty and abundance of technologies and good facilites and more people started to settle on.....” Facilities was spelt wrong but like I said I will not nitpick all the small details because that is not fair.
There are very small spelling mistakes and grammar mistakes that can be overlooked, but as I continued to read the more childlike it seemed. I DO believe that the audience for this middle schoolers and not adults, unless this is your type of book.
Another reason why I will not be continuing to read this book is because I honestly do not like this type of genre, the whole Greek, Fantasy, sci-fi feel of it is not my prefeed read. I do tend to read Fantasy or dystopian, because Greek, Fantasy and Sci-Fi pretty much all in one is not my cup of tea. I was never able to get into that type of genre because it seems over rated and over done (just my opinion)
I will give you 4 stars for being self-published and having the guts to do what many are to afraid to do. I give you 4 stars because there are people out there that will love your writing and books. I am just not one of those people. Take my review with a grain of salt my friend, It is just an opinion, I am sure others will love your works of art. Please keep writing and keep pushing. I do recommend that you should broadcast this towards the younger audience.
Keep up the work, keep trying and keep going.
I read this about 2 months ago for one of my college classes. I rated it one star not because I did not like the book. I rated it one star because there was a lot of mistakes in the book. There is wrong information within the first 16 pages. Then throughout the book there is more.
I enjoyed the content within the book when it was correct but the majority of my time reading this book. I was fact checking just to make sure it was correct.
I have an issue with reading books like this and majority of the information on people they speak about is incorrect. It takes away from the overall book.
You find one mistake, you think okay someone didn't catch it, too easy. You see two, then three and more after that. Now you as a reader do not even know if the book is trustworthy and have to fact check every time they mentioned a name, date, location etc.
But overall it is a decent book. If and when i find another book like this, that is actually correct. I will come back and insert it here.
I read this book in 2014 durning NTC. I honestly did not think I would enjoy this book but I was wrong. One day before I was going to spend 2 weeks without phones, showers an all that good stuff. I went to the px to buy a book or two for this field training. I saw a whole bunch of books but this one an some other book caught my interest the most. So during most of ntc I did forget about these books until the last 3 days. When one of the vehicles could no longer move or be fixed. So during the last three days, i did nothing but read an wait. An this book was surprisingly good. The main character was a little annoying and the plot was simple.
I have never finished this book. I have attempted to read this book so many times since it was turned into a movie. I always end at the last few chapters due to me being personally bored. I never understood the hype around the book or the movie, but that is just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt. If you like the book or want to read it. Then do so. Do not let my opinion stop you from reading this book or any book.
I read this book back in middle school and thought it was… not good at all. Over the years I’ve forgotten the reason why I never liked it.
Here we are in 2025 doing a reread and well. I still don’t like it. It’s just not good. It’s boring, redundant and the was the villain speaks to the 12 year olds FMC is weird asf.
The first time I read this book was back in 2008. I was in 8th grade. I hated reading because every book that I ever picked up was not my style/cup of tea. Then one day I saw this little book on my teacher's bookshelf and asked if I could read it. That day was the day I fell in love with reading. This book is unique with a little hint of W.I.T.C.H. elements in there. Ever since 2008, I have been looking for similar books like this. Yet, I have not found any.
I just finished rereading it in 2023, over a decade later. One of the oldest books on my shelf.
Update 2024:
I still do not know how I'm supposed to feel about Crank.
But... In my opinion I feel as though It's a powerful book for older middle schoolers/high schoolers to read. This book is one of few books that have touched upon heavy topics relating to teens in a way that they could relate too.
As for me, i think my biggest issue I have with these books is the fact I hate the formatting of them. It annoys me and waste paper.
Was I captivated by this book? No, and the reason for that is my personal experience (witnessing and living with) with someone on “crank”.
Older review:
When I was a teenager this book was popular because it just came out. I have attempted to read it many times and each time it has failed to captivate me. I always felt like I had read a different book than the ones that loved it.
sigh
I don't know.
I have read this book a few times since being out of school. I personally cannot get into this book. When I was first introduced to holes in middle school I did not like it. An I always thought it was me being forced to read it, but that was not the case. I just find this book personally boring an dull. It does have scene of excitement but I think for me it wasn't enough excitement. But there is an audience for this book, it is just not me.
