Definitely Grimdark to say the least! If you get your panties in a twist about graphic sex scenes, rape, or dismemberment then do not read this book. If you can handle all these things and love unique monsters, crazy “aww shiiiiit” revelations, a character driven story, with a great battle scene towards the end then this is for you.
This book has been said to be like Dark Souls but I don't really see it. If you take out the morbid creatures and just the fact that the world is brutal then it's nothing a like.
I loved reading about every character but Chroma was probably my favorite but he barely had a part in this one. It became much more Nora focused but she turned into an absolute badass as well.
The authors writing is very good, although he was just showing off on some words I've never even seen before. I definitely will be reading all of this series!
This is the first werewolf book I've ever read and it was awesome!
The story is set in 1930's Georgia. The Nichols just moved in and for some reason the town always sends their pigs across their river even though they can't afford to do it. They have a meeting and convince the town folk to stop. People start being mutilated and they have to go across the river to figure out just what's out there that the older town folk have been warning everyone about...something with sharp teeth.
It was a slow burn but the last half the book was a thrill ride and the ending was super good. Love this book and it was a perfect October read.
Kind of disappointed in the last book in this series. This one has expanded POVs that I didn't care about, confusing action scenes, and it just felt like a lot of padding. I pretty much skimmed the last 50 pages just to get it over with but I give the whole series 4 stars as a whole and hopefully I'll understand it more on a reread and will give it 5 stars!
There's a possibility I'm just going through a reading slump since this is the 3rd book in a row that I have 2 stars or less, and they were all very popular authors. I can see why people might like this since his writing style is pretty good but the story as a whole was unfortunately not working for me at this time.
Cronin's prose is top tier among writers of any genre and the first 60% of this book was wonderful to me. But I quickly became very confused and when I get confused I get bored and when I get bored I zone out and have read several pages and can't remember a word I just read. I had to read spoiler reviews just understand the ending. Honestly I didn't miss much because it wasn't that interesting of ending when you take into consideration how great the build up was.
My lord this is awesome. I don't understand how this series isn't very popular when the original was so famous. This series might even be better than the original because he took the same elements and just made it even better. Extremely excited for the last book but I also don't want it to ever end
A fun little story about a ruler of a planet who's people have been annihilated, but Hadrian must find out if it was the evil Cielcin or the Queen herself who did it. It's also followed by a history of the Marlowe family
Definitely well written but I like my books to be more serious than this. If you like Nicholas Eames then you'll definitely love this book. Just not my style.
Well I really wanted to like this one but I guess it's just not for me. I didn't care for any of the characters. No death mattered to me and that's a huge problem for me. That's kind of the whole point of the book. I did think that he portrayed violence very well and that's about the only positive thing I have to say.
Holy cow I enjoyed the heck out of this. It's YA and while I would prefer there to be blood and guts I had a blast with this. If you're a fan of Scythe or Hunger Games then absolutely read this.
Conrad was nobility but his father and mother were killed and his Uncle captured his sister as bait for Conrad to do his bidding. Conrad must join a competition where he must rise to captain of a flying ship and kill the most Gorgantuans (massive serpents) but it's not easy by any means and even if he wins he still must save his sister and seek vengeance.
Caveat to this review is that it's a romance novel and that isn't really my forté.
I went into this knowing nothing about it other than that it involved Vampires. I personally love supernatural horror especially involving vampires so I thought this would be perfect for me during October but this had little to no horror.
The story was told from the perspective of one of Dracula's wives. Its told similar to Bram Stoker's Dracula in the sense that it's told through the medium of letters. She is writing to Dracula talking about their lives over the centuries and all the different partners they had before she kills him and why she kills him. (Not a spoiler because it's on the first page)
I will say on a positive note the prose is really good and I blew through this book but it had little pay off for me being that there was little to no action at all, but that's not what to expect of this novel. If you enjoy romance with a vampire twist then I urge you to read this but it's just “meh” for me.
Holy cow what a surprise. This may be one of my favorites this week although part of the reason is because the narrator for the audiobook did such a great job with the voices. I'm also a huge fan of Sci-fi horror so this is right up my alley. I would call this a love child of Dead Space, Presidents Day, and The Last Of Us.
You have a boy who wakes up with amnesia in the middle of an alien war, but they're not there to attack humans per say. There are 2 different races fighting over Earth because their border line goes through the center of our world. They have annihilated most of the humans but this boy, who doesn't know who he is, has special powers that could save all humanity but he doesn't know how, he just knows there is a voice in his head guiding him.
The world-building and supporting cast of this book is wonderful and Robert's prose is perfect. Two five star reviews in a row for this author, making him a must read going forward.
awesome
My first taste of McCammon and I must say that I am impressed. It's basically a western Blade The Vampire Hunter novella. The first story has fun character building for Trevor, he is a Vampire For Hire who only drinks animal blood and works as a private investigator in a way. On the side, he's searching for his maker to suck her dry to hopefully become human again.
Book 2 doesn't pick off where the first one did and basically abandoned the main premise which was irritating but it was significantly more action packed so it paid off. It left off like there will be book 3 but I don't know why there hasn't been one...
I don't understand why this isn't higher rated. One of my favorite vampire tales of all time and probably my favorite audiobook. Graphic audiobooks are so much better than regular audiobooks.
The story is set in 2043. A comet has hit the earth covering the earth from the sun which created perpetual winter. The vampires now run free. Were they here all along or did the comet bring them? There are multiple kinds of blood suckers, some more sentient than others but all are unimaginable horrors.
Follow this amazing cast as they try to survive this vampire apocalypse
It was okay to me but I'm not a pre-teen girl so it's really hard for me to get into this.
Like all Sanderson novels it was very well written with lots of twists. It's also one of the most unique books I've ever read so kudos to him for that. I can see why people like it but either I'm just not super into it or im not reading it at the right time of my life.
I give it 2 stars for my enjoyment of it and 5 stars on its uniqueness and professional writing!
This series is just “light years” ahead of any sci-fi series out there but surprisingly my least favorite of the series. This book took forever to get going but the last 1/4 was really good with a wonderful ending. I love the friendship between Hadrian and Lorian and the relationship between Hadrian and Valka. One thing that frustrates me about this series is that Christopher won't ever go back to what his father and brother are doing. He gives little passive references about them but nothing substantial. I've been waiting for Hadrian to meet his father again so hopefully within the next 2 books he does.
Absolutely impossible to give this series anything less than 5 stars. Just an outstanding series and incredibly underrated. The fact that it doesn't have at least 20,000+ reviews and a movie deal is beyond me. I can only assume poor marketing is the ONLY reason Durfee's books aren't getting more recognition because everything else is flawless. I still haven't finished several popular fantasy series but as of right now The Five Warrior Angels is officially my #3 fantasy series of all time, behind ASOIAF and Memory, Sorrow and Thorn
Brian, if you ever read this, PLEASE write a prequel series, standalone, novella...anything!
DNF. I just can't bring myself to finish this. He rambles and rambles and it's not even relevant to the story for most of it. The main character, a teenager, talks like he's older than me and his actions are nothing like a teenager which is very common in a lot of people's stories so I'm not holding that part to hard against him. Still love King and as many books has he's written of course he would be bound to hit a few lows every now and then. Judging by most of the reviews either nobody agrees with me or everyone is fanatics to the point where every King story is 5 stars
Dnf page 290
Well I popped my Tchaikovsky cherry and it was not good. I've never wanted to like a book more than this one. The cover is my favorite cover of all time. I truly wanted this to be on my bookshelf and I've heard such great things about the author that I had to give this a try. Granted I've heard that his fantasy is not that great compared to his Sci-fi which is why I wanted to read this first before reading a sci-fi masterpiece.
Let me tell you I almost never give a rating on a DNF under 75%. I don't think it's fair to the author when it could just be a slow burn, but 60% is close enough when you take in to account just how much effort I had to give. Hell the first chapter was alarming for me. It reads as if Charles Dicken's wrote 1984 but included subtle magic with God and Demons. That might sound good to you but I don't like classics unless it's Dumas and while I enjoyed the premise of 1984, it was still a hard book to get into. Then you include religious creatures but in no way could you imagine how he portrays them in this.
All in all you might like the book if you can make it to the end but I tap out, but by no means am I giving up on the author as a whole.
I can understand why some people can't handle this book due to the language being of Old English but I think that's what makes this book all the more better. Pyle did a great job in telling a story as authentically as possible as how it is to become a knight in those days as well as dealing with social status all while telling a story of a young squire reaching knighthood to kill the man who ruined his fathers good name. Very well written and if Pyle's other stories are up to par with this then he may be one of my favorite authors.
Another outstanding performance from Crouch. I'm not well versed on Sci-fi and especially not sci-fi thrillers but he simply has to be the best!
Definitely no punches pulled from this book. Fonda gets a little more ambitious with this one by not only expanding the world from just an island to an entire world full of continents, she throws in more characters which comes with even more drama!
The Mountain clan have seemingly put a pause on their beef No Peak, but that doesn't mean they're not plotting and making political and economical moves behind the scenes.
I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel but my only issue is with Anden. I very much understand that he his gay from the first book so there was no need to keep bringing it up and instead build on his other qualities. In this book she doubles down on it and every single time he appears in the book it's making references to him being gay or having sex. Like WE KNOW! He likes butt stuff! Now is there any other quality that this guy has that's actually relevant to his character? He seems to be a very powerful character that I am sure will be expanded upon in the next book so fingers crossed
