I love this series. I love the apocalyptic world. There are so many horrors the group has to deal with as well as the game and the gray areas the books is working into (What's good and bad). I love the use of Tarot cards as the symbol of these teens and their physical supernatural power. I cringed at the thought of a love triangle but Death is a surprising character. He is moody, sad, angry, can't touch and madness but it is all understandable after you learn about his story. At first, you may hate the character but by the end you feel for him even if he is making the wrong decisions. Evie is bad ass now that she is coming into her powers. Love Lark and her power. One thing that annoys me...Cliffhanger!!!! Now I have to wait...again.
Needed to read before the movie was released. Adjusting to the narrator, the beginning was a little confusing, strange, and slow. Midway through I couldn't put it down. Great character development. The story of times when children have to beyond their years.
Quote page 526: “Her hand was sore by page three. Words are so heavy, she thought, but as the night wore on, she was able to complete eleven pages.”
Intriguing characters and interesting world building. Honoria is a tough, loyal, and confused character. Blade seems dangerous but his personality grows into a more protective, and kind character. The steampunk world is not focused on the gadget side but the medical developments, which makes for an interesting twist. Great debut. Although I love the cover art the main male character is blond.
First let me say I'm happy there was no love triangle. Roth showed Tris and Four's relationship have enough to deal with when there world is falling apart. I loved the reader was able to see more of the fractions and factionless. The characters were more developed with personalities becoming more three diminutional do to situation and war. Some lesser characters from book one end up surprising Tris and the reader. The ending made this worth reading.
Another dystrophia type novel I recommend. I find Tris, being a 16 year old girl, is complex and likable. She has trouble making decisions, reading people and situations in the beginning but it is understandable. These are life changing decisions and there is no turning back. She finds and learns to trust her inner strength. Four is another good hard to read character. The author does good on the teenage romance factor without the angst. Love the cover art. I wish there was more world building but that the problem with first person, you only get the one view. The end of the book left a lot of questions but I'm sure the author will reveal a bigger view of the world, it's look and characters in the next novel. A good start to a trilogy.
It was ok. The characters and their fears, desires were clear. As you can see from other reviews many character's personality where un-liked. My issue was the author explaining to much instead of showing action, or dialog. I've read many reviews before picking up this book. Anyone who says Rachel should have ended up with Ethan has not read the book. I think that option is movie based. Ethan is long distance in this and he is rachel's vacation escape from the wedding. The book had Hilary as the friend mostly in the know, giving advice, and challenging Dexter.
I've seen the speech and like seeing it reading it will take about 20 minutes. It is funny, inspirational, and fantastic. I only had a problem with the graphic design. I expected more art. Sometimes the type was difficult to read either because of the size or the way it was presented. Otherwise, this speech has the same impact whether it is being heard or read.
I love and found the main character's jewelry/weapon/design skills unique. The main male was a little to Alpha. I knew how it would end but I mostly liked the twists and turns throughout the book to get to the ending. I like the tournament that added good fight scenes. I love the elaborate world but to throw in random slang or pop culture from our earth world sometimes was jarring. I also was taken out by the last complication Trehan had during a battle. It seemed so, sweep under the rug, problem solved. The nicknames where a little repetitive. Fun read. I like the writing style. Think I will try one of Cole's other series.
Still love the wonderful unique prose. The first half of the book was slow and made it hard to get into until it wasn't. Still the same engaging characters and a few new interesting introductions. Love how this young adult novel has found a grown-up voice with the cold truth of the ugly side of war. This is not just about star crossed lovers but the depth to save a people, save two worlds, and save themselves.
I would say just pick up this book and start reading. If you don't read the book blurb you will be hooked by the twist beginning. If the blurb is read, the premise is new and imaginative. At first I was happy this book wasn't a series but after finishing I wish there were more books about this world so this setting could be more flushed out. Liked the characters. The constant action kept the story moving. I found the ghost protocol so interesting and cruel. I love how the author played with the human ability to ignore as a norm and the side affects of not existing that was created for the aliens and the world. I ate this book up.
I was surprised with how fast I read this book. Ione did a great job creating and building the world. Well written. The characters had great depth and complexity. The reader gets more of a feel of the “evil” side and I think I would like to learn more about the “good” side. The story was fast paced but not lacking deepness. The plot wasn't lost with the sex scene. I was (pleasantly) surprised and loved how the sex scenes help build the background and personality of the characters. So what bothered me? Every other word had to do with how hot someone looked or every character thinking about sex all the time. But for sexy fluff it was a good read.
This is a fifth book in a series but the author did a good job of not confusing the reader introducing characters from past books. I haven't read any other book in “The Others” series and I felt this could be a stand-alone story. Liked the main character, Luc, and the main female lead, Corinne. The book was a fast, easy read. What bothered me was the romance was a big focus through most of the story and the investigative tale took a back seat a lot of the time. The inquiry and search didn't seem very urgent.
Eve was still kiss ass. Roarke came across less creepy. It was an easy, fluff type of read. Again future world was the backdrop. Murder still is piloted by the same motives. I was disappointed to find when I was close to the end I all ready knew who the murder was from the beginning. I lost interest in the chase. But writing was good. The POV change was much more clear in this installment.
The Sci-Fi world is not a major role in the story. This book is more of a Sci-fi backdrop, murder mystery with some romance thrown in. I like the strong, clear writing. The mystery was good. I like the hint that even though there have been advances some themes will always remain constant in the world of money, and politics. What rubbed the wrong way was the change of POV in from one sentence to another. Became a bit jarring at times.
The main character, Eve, is a very strong, independent, and smart female lead. Not sure how I feel about Roarke, the love interest, who is smart and strong but can be alpha at times. In these Alpha time I find Eve holds her own and that allows Roarke to grow on the reader. But in the beginning he comes off as a creeper and it's hard to shake that image.
Annwyl was a good strong character. Morfyd was a great character. Strong and smart. Wish we could have seen/learned more about her. I liked the second story, Chains & Flames, but I was a little tired of the land by that point. The switching of multiple points of view could have happened less. I would have switch the heavy on the sex for more plot. Maybe half the amount of repetitiveness like ass slapping/growling /descriptions of Annwyl's breasts, and double the amount of plot and character development. More character development on her brother's wizard and the lightning dragons. There are a lot of questions left unanswered and a cliché seen was needed where the bad guy give up all his motives and explained how he came to making this plan. With out this information it was hard to care about the characters.
Liked the main character, Gavyn, but the dialogue was a bit stereotypical/clique. My favorite characters were probably the side characters like Ian, and Tory. They seemed more real. I liked the plot/storyline but I thought it took to long for the story to play out. It felt like one long boring road trip of prolonging the inevitable.
