A sweet little book about loyalty, the powers of an education, the importance of self assertion and judging one by one's actions and not his/her religion. Excellent read about tolerance without it being preachy. The main character is reminiscent of Anne from the Green Gables series.

Torn between 3.5 and 4 stars. It definitely was a page-turner. And the unreliability of the main character's memory at times really made for that nice twist that kept me wanting to read on and on and on.

I never knew Steve Martin to be an author until I came across this little novella in a book sale and got to talking to the librarian about it. Like the comedian, it was a pretty sharp and witty read. Perfect for a day in the park.
