This book was not at all what I was expecting! Seems to follow one kind of genre and then flips into something else, but I really did like the twist. Though as with most short stories I did wish that it was a bit longer, the ending felt a little rushed and also a little out of nowhere. But Jess as a character is someone you can really empathize with, no matter what's happening she is very kind and it really makes you root for her. The writing while good felt a little heavy in some points and I found myself drifting out of focus now and again but did enjoy it overall.
What a page turner! The action starts almost right away really gets you into the story, didn't want to put it down, the action never stop and was relentless.
This however is maybe the one time I wish a book was shorter I think trimming it down it some place would have made for a even more enjoyable read. Also there was just some parts that felt a little out of place as far as what horrible people would actually do that felt like it was only there to add page count.
But still this was a great book and is a quick read, so if you like a secluded horror feel then this is the book for you. Definitely check trigger warnings.
This book is perfectly relaxing, it's a super cozy read. All the characters are lovely, and I loved every minute with them. It's a new take on fantasy that was very enjoyable, and I hope he writes more about Viv and her coffee shop!
This was an awesome book! Felt like watching an exorcism movie, and yet had some pretty unique elements to it that made it different to the typical story one might expect. Had some weird lines here and there, and near the end the story felt a little bit longer than needed but still overall was great! 4.5 :)
It was pretty good, but I wouldn't look into to much before reading as a lot of reviews make the ending super obvious. Though it doesn't typically bother me, it is a super obvious twist and I found the end to come on quite quickly. It was written well though and I think would make a pretty good full length novel or even a decent movie thing just need to be more fleshed out. Needed a few more pages.
This was an excellent book! I wish the twisted had been revealed slightly later because after it was there was quite a bit of book left and it felt a little off but a great read it is hard to talk about with out spoiling it though. 4.75/5 but rounded up.
I adored this book! A tale about the strength of women and those who are weird or don't fit in. It was sad and heart breaking but also extremely powerful, perfect for anyone really but especially women, though I do highly suggest checking out content warnings. The three women in this book are strong, kind and fighting their way through a male dominated world. Though I often struggle with multiple POV books this one was done so well that I loved reading from each character, found that their stories wove together wonderfully, I hope this author writes more!
Since there are only three stories I'll give them each a rating.
Things have gotten worse since we last spoke.
This wasn't bad, it was definitely creepy and I could the descent into danger and madness that our character Agnes heads into. I think that end lack a little bit and maybe due to how much it was hyped I expected it to be more disturbing. 4/5
The enchantment.
This one was odd and I don't think I really caught on to what it was saying until I read the afterword. It seemed a bit all over the place. I'd give it a 3.75/5 as I still do enjoy the writing.
You'll find it's like that all over.
Weirdly I think this one might be my favourite it really fit into the good short story formula, he got in he got out and I could easily pick up the ideas the author was exploring, I also think that as a woman the idea of social expectations of being polite is something that really spoke to me. The end wasn't wasn't perfect but overall was good. 4.5/5
So all together I think the collection sits at about 4/5 definitely worth reading, and will give his other works a try.
This book has some really good moments, most of the stories did hook me however they all left me wanting more and had a two sentence horror story feel, where I could see a good idea surfacing but not enough in how it was done. Though for transparency it could be that shorter stories aren't for me and those who love shorter stories might love this.
I think that this had really great potential, such an interesting idea, however it didn't quite follow through. There wasn't enough world building and the relationship between Lady Mae the community was very confusing. The characters also felt pretty one dimensional and the theme of forgiveness wasn't really fleshed out. I also had a hard time with some of the internal monologues that felt super repetitive. I think an idea like this works best in a series of books so it can really stretch its legs and breath. And last the writing felt very YA, which isn't bad in itself but just felt weird when reading and adult horror novel.
I love this man's writing, it really does invoke a sense of creepiness and suspense that is hard to shake, and keeps you coming back wanting to know how it ends! It was also a wonderfully depicted exploration of anxiety and the transition from teen to young adult.
I know that this might not be other peoples favourite series but I really enjoy reading these books, yes they can be a little over the top or silly but they have a lot of heart I think. Really they're about the resilience of man and our need to band together.
So while I did enjoy this book I think it's hard to compare sequels to the first and I definitely enjoyed the first book a lot more, I found the multiple character point of view a lot less enjoyable, and I also found that it felt at times like there was just too much going on. The end also wasn't great and felt a bit rushed. However it was still very enjoyable and a good book ! Closer to a 4.5
A beautiful story, great for those of us out there that have a strained relationship or no relationship with our mothers especially us daughters. But a great read for anyone who wants to gain more empathy and understanding for children of abusive mothers. Also a horrifying look into how easy it can be for children in the film and tv industry to be abused. So glad I read it and definitely hope she writes more.
Absolutely loved this book! It was thought provoking and mysterious, and it managed multiple POVs wonderfully each character was interesting and I enjoyed reading each one. A very interesting sci-fi that is quite different to so many of the sci-fi books I have read, much more contemporary but still amazing.
I love this book's approach on the climate change and capitalism issues that we face, it was very unique and
I found myself highlighting many of great quotes that I felt spoke to real world situations. The characters were interesting though some I enjoyed reading about than others. The only thing that leaves me to review it 4 instead of 5 is the end, didn't enjoy it as much as the rest of the read and found it went really fast in some sections. But definitely a must a read!
Really an interesting graphic novel that
manages to tell a story that has very deep themes, while still keeping an overall whimsical and magical feel.
Felt a little empty in some spots a few things happening to fast but very much looking forward to the next one.
I loved most of the Rob sections, and didn't mind the Callie sections especially towards the end the arrowod sections however I could do without. It's definitely one of those books that keeps you guessing until the end, and has lots of cool twists. I did however find Callie a little too annoying which I think I understand why but still made some her parts hard to get through. I also found the end a bit abrupt. Definitely one to read the warnings on. But overall an enjoyable experience.
I really wanted to like this book, in the beginning I really enjoyed the story, I liked the way it was written it was creepy and I was excited. But I didn't really enjoy the authors added bits, though it becomes more apart of the story later it really took me out of the story, I ended up skimming some of those parts. And near the end I was wanting to be done reading it. So not really my kind of book though I do think this book will work for many in the queer community sadly just not me.
Though I loved this book, I did find the beginning a little slow and the end came very quickly. But the characters were great a the mystery held up till close to the end. But overall I really enjoyed this read especially once I got a bit into it and I didn't want to put it down.
This was just a really creepy novella. Doesn't say anything ground breaking but was a very enjoyable read. It could have been longer but didn't feel like it was missing anything at the same time. If you have a fear of the ocean already maybe skip this one.
As with most collections of stories some are better than others. This one did a pretty good job across the board. Little lights and Flower Crown being my favourites. My least favourite being The glass window. The stories were cute and sweet, and the characters are fun. I look forward to seeing more from this author. Would really give it a 4.5.
I liked the idea of this book I think more than the execution. Not all the stories were equal and I found it hard to get through some of them. And the over all message was pretty heavy handed especially at the end. But I did enjoy some of the stories enough that I can't say it isn't worth a read, just a bit of slow one.
This one might be my favourite one so far, this author doesn't let up on his characters and I love it. They are quick and fun reads, not some great work of masterpiece literature but an enjoyable story with fun characters and a cool plot.
This was a fun book, felt like watching a typical horror teen slasher. The characters were a bit too one dimensional but overall it was a fun read.
