I love super hero books, they just tend to be written pretty well and since they always seem to be in the first person, it makes for a fun read. Anyhow, Steelheart despite taking a different spin to the “Superhero Book thing”, is really a fun read. I'm glad there's gonna be more to the reckoner's story.
I can sense a long series and what bums me out is each book gets worse worse.
1. I'm willing to forgive the (British IIRC) author not being able to write American english slang well, but the american characters don't read at all like Americans.
2. The editing is atrocious. I forgave the first book, and mostly the second, but now by the forth, I think it too is getting worse. Sentences with misplaced or wrong words. Words that must have been dropped in by autocorrection and not caught, etc. It makes it hard to read when you're editing on the fly.
3. the character development is taking giant leaps backwards. Major Taylor grows and gets more awesome, as do a few others in the first two books. In the Third he starts to devolve to a one dimensional character. By the forth he's not just a one dimensional character, he's bipolar. He goes from being down on war to pro war in the span of 3 paragraphs, and back again. Then he goes from sympathetic towards another character to opening disliking the character.
Lots and lots could be improved in this book, except the overall story. That is actually good and engaging, despite the obvious “tune in next time ending” that is getting common after book 2. If only the rest of the book could live up to the story
I don't read much King. No real reason, the movie adaptations are always interesting, I just don't read him. But when I saw this title listed on Amazon, i had to see what it was about.
Glad I did. Really good read. he kinda wraps it up in a hurry, which after investing so much time leading up to the end, a few more pages/chapters to really close it wouldn't hurt my feelings, but ending aside, awesome book.
Definitely a good read.
I'm about 70% thru as I write this and am really impressed. I'm always kinda torn when it comes to Gary V. Sometimes he's really inspirational as an entrepreneur, and sometimes I just wanna sock him, and most of the time I don't pay attention to him. BUT this book is pretty remarkable.
There's some internet 101, which I could do with out, but I suspect that part of the book isn't meant for me. The rest is quite interesting and really helps get the entrepreneurial juices flowing. I suspect anyone who reads his book and isn't doing what they love, will be leaving their jobs (good for the economy, those that want the work can get it and those that should be working on their passions will be) to follow Gary's words.
I consider this a business book, and have sworn those off in the last few years since they're mostly lip service about how great the author is and how with hard work you too can be great, without ever actually offering advice. Gary offers advice.
Great read at only 70% done.
I try to shy away from Star Trek books, since most are just so poorly written, but I tried my luck and was richly rewarded!
This entire trilogy is just awesome! It's Trek at it's best. Besides the typical trek writing, my other fear was “Oh great, another book about the borg, the Enterprise narrowly escaping and saving the day” but was pleasantly surprised that that wasn't the case (well of course to some degree it was LOL), and along the way, huge things happened that were just awesome.
If you're a sci fi fan, but leery of Trek books, give this series a shot, it's a good read!
