It was an ok story. Didn't hit me big with revelations or insights. Nice, quite a quick read.
DNF @17% Didn't really grab me. Prose was interesting in the way that it went back forth between flowery and normal descriptive style. I had hard time connecting with it. May try later again.
Sorry, this was not for me. 72 pages in I dropped. Nothing interesting happening that would make me want to continue to read. No plot or characters that would be interesting. Also laborious descriptions about exotic environments that don't really give me a reason to pick up the book once I put it down.
It was ok. I couldn't really connect fully with the characters. The pace was a bit uneven, with some interesting and good scenes that had faster pace or something else interesting that held my interest. I think could be edited for a more tighter package. Unfortunately, I seem to have middling reactions to books with huge hype behind them. Personally as an overall package it's a solid 3 out of 5.
Coming off reading Yumi and Nightmare painter may color the rating somewhat as they are pretty much totally opposite in terms of mood and other aspects.. However, there was still something I enjoyed here quite a bit.
I've read Koontz before with middling feelings but here I think the characters and the plot were good. Even the despicable antagonist was interesting in its sick depiction. Also the main character and their background and struggles were interesting to me. It got very claustrophobic at times with varying degrees of stakes on the line.
Something about the flow of his writing here also worked for me.
The overall package was quite tight. Few somewhat overly descriptive scenes but nothing to bring it down too much.
Very bland for my tastes. Dropped Abt 140 pages in. I wasn't feeling the need to pick it up unfortunately.
Interesting characters. Nice interplay between them. The plot was ok. I do not feel pulled in to read more though. I do not see why this is heralded as one of the greatest scifi books ever created.
Excellent, really interesting concepts. Great prose, can't wait to read other books in the series.
I mean it's a huge achievement of a book. I don't like to rate it a 3 but I think you can get to what the book was after with significantly fewer words. With less pages it could easily be 4 or even 5. I cannot give it more now because I have to enjoy the book pretty much throughout to give 4 or 5.
I liked the characters and I liked the story. I think people misrepresent "when it picks up", It's much closer to the last 100 pages than the last 300 pages.
Those last beats of the story were good. But to get there was really drawn out. I have the next one, which I will probably continue with at some point.
