It's been years since I read detective stories with any regularity, but right now I'm really enjoying the Miss Fisher mysteries. Fun and easy reads.
I really liked this story. The world is fascinating & the characters interesting. Now to get ahold of part 2...
This was really good. Interesting world, good characters.
It's taken me a long time to read this one. When I'm stressed I tend to move from book to book and the only one I'll read consistently is the one I keep in my bag, to read on the bus to and from work.
Side-note: this was the 1000th book I marked as “read” here.
I watched Sally Kohn's TED talk on hate with my students and we had such fantastic discussions. And so I decided to read this. This book is both interesting and important.
This was the daily deal on audible a while back, and I got it on a whim. Partly because it's read by Mary Robinette Kowal who is a great reader. The book's not the kind of thing I normally read, but it had some charm.
When I was a kid I got this book somewhere, I think as a prize in the local library's summer reading programme. You had to read and write about 10 books over the summer and then you got to choose a book. To my disappointment you could only get 2 prizes in one summer. In hindsight it makes sense - would have cleaned them out.
Anyway, I LOVED this book and read it multiple times. I still have it, and I've read it a couple of times as an adult, for the nostalgia. Today, for the first time, I read it in its original English which felt a bit weird. ;) Anyway, it's an atmospheric read, I've always liked Laura and Jacko, and Carmody Braque is a pretty scary villain.
Strangely, I've never read anything else by Margaret Mahy...
Super-interesting. Exciting read, creepy killer. And a very determined woman, as well as the people who worked with her.
I have a soft spot for the classic monster tales. Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, Dracula etc.
So this book was great fun to read - it was exciting and fun and I'm looking forward to continuing the series.
I mostly read this for work. We're hoping to buy it so a whole class can read it together. It's an important story, and a strong one.
This uses a story structure that seems to be very popular in historical fiction: parallel storylines, where a woman now is learning about an earlier woman's life. It's not my favourite trope.
This is my second book by Chanel Cleeton, I read Last Train to Key West last year. This one wasn't quite as good for me, though there were many things I liked. I preferred Elisa's story over Marisol's. But, the perspective of a person returning to their family's homeland, and finding it changed from the stories, and still having a lot of home was interesting.
I like C C's writing style, and I own a couple of her other books, I'll gladly read more.
“Do you remember where you were when the Meteor hit? I've never understood why people phrase it as a question, because of course you remember.”
Oh, wow. I loved this book! The combination of space program and the 1950s was fascinating. I loved Elma and Nathaniel, and many of the other women computers, pilots and trainee astronauts. I really didn't like Parker.
Mary Robinette Kowal is one of my favourite authors and this is one of her best, in my opinion.
