3 1/2 rounded up
liked the atmosphere, but found it a a bit long and character motivations not totally convincing + missed opportunity to connect to bigger themes
Better than I expected - a really interesting alternative world European crime novel. Alan Furst meets Zelzany.
Interesting idea, novel setting, but not nearly as powerful as Half Made World or Rise of Ransom City. I enjoyed the book but expected more.
Good English spy novel. Non-cold war or world war 2 spy novel. Contemporary spy fiction on Russians in London, money laundering, and London as Butler to the World
Good story but given setting and size of book missed deeper digging into imperialism & ecological change
Enjoyed a lot more than many of Ondaatje's books. Funny and interesting. A near five star book, but I found something visceral missing.
Funny but a bit too cute. And I prefer a bit more realism or grit even with the comedy. Especially when the comedy includes Stalin and Mao.
Expect it would be funnier in Swedish, but a good translation.
Collection of science fiction short stories that range from fair to very good. Stories have an mild feminist focus on current dystopic trends.
Buildings on characters in series, which was both a plus and a minus.
Didn't really like the meta-fictional aspects
Effectively set during Covid
Four stars for people reading the series, or interested in covid in fiction.
Three for others.
Enjoyed early 19th century novel from Boyd. I found it quite comparable to Restless, better than Ordinary Thunderstorms, but slighter and without the weight of Any Human Heart, Brazzaville Beach , or New Confessions.
