Really enjoyed this one. Reads like a mystery. Alice loses 10 years of memory after a fall and has to piece together what went wrong/right with her life. It's a fast breezy read. I raced to the finish. Really enjoyed the characters and the relationships they have with one another. Story is told from Alice's perspective, her sister's perspective, and their grandmother's perspective.
Fast, funny, and enjoyable read. Loved all the characters but the McGuffin Margo; but I think that's the point.
Starts strong, but this puppy went on farrrrr too long. Could have hacked 100 pages from it and it would have been a pretty good read. Ending was a little...erm... but by the time I got to it I was wishing I had cut a chunk out of the middle.
Loved this. It's a spin on Sleeping Beauty. Would love to read more about Toadling.
Tried listening to this one...hung in there for 1/2 an hour and wowza was it a relief to flip the car stereo to ‘FM' and throw in the towel.
This has been on my ‘to read' list forever. I slogged through it. What an array of dysfunctional characters! I recall enjoying Jane Eyre. This one not as much.
Well-told, fascinating, and at times funny, story of a former child actress and former co-star on Nickelodeon's iCarly. I suspect the described abuse this young woman endured growing up is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Absolutely heartbreaking.
This one was fun. Academic goes to Norway to do that last bit of fieldwork for her book. She's a little too obsessed with work and his horrible at reading people. Cough So things go sideways with the local townsfolk until her dazzlingly charming coworker shows up to help out. I thought the characters were fun and I liked the story. Have book 2 queued up and ready to go.
Was hoping “The Hidden Ones” would turn out to be trolls. The book would have taken a turn into horror if that had been the case.
Seems from the reviews you either loved it or hated it. I fall into the group of people that enjoyed this one. I liked that Marcellus the GPO
Short sweet novel about a long distance friendship between foodies. I listened to it while scrubbing my kitchen and it had me looking forward to cooking.
I'd never read any Kipling before. This was an enjoyable ‘toe in the water' - and I look forward to reading more. This would be a fun one to read aloud to kids - lots of opportunities for different voices.
Whoamygod is this one long. And dull. It became more like a personal challenge for me to just be able to claim I finished the thing. I did it.
I kept shunting this one to the bottom of the pile, as I wasn't enthused about diving into a WWII Holocaust story. Because of the good reviews, I tossed it into the book bag and dragged it along with me on my last roadtrip. Glad I did - I couldn't put it down. It's a depressing topic, but well told, and covered an aspect of the Holocaust I was unaware of.
I really enjoyed this slice of life story about teenager Mary Jane and her summer job nannying for a neighborhood family. The story does a good job of describing that point in time where households were beginning to transition away from the Donna Reed housewife era. I grew up in this era, and the descriptions of little Izzy's feral Gen-X upbringing were pretty spot on. Loved all the references to the music, I'll have to look up the author's playlist.
Listened to this one in the car. Enjoyed the last quarter of the book as the pace sped up and things were wrapped up. I found parts of the story repetitive. And the ‘she was so very very beautiful' thing got a bit old.
Sweeping multigenerational family saga about a Korean family's experience in Japan. This is not a part of history I know much about - and this story made me interested in learning more. The book follows one family, and the story jumps forward a few years for each new chapter. Felt like a series of related vignettes, but I was very engaged with the story and the characters. I really liked this one.
Listened to this one in the car. Very enjoyable. I look forward to the 2nd in the series.
