Didn't know what to expect after the opening jolt vis a vis the narrator. Flynn is an excellent story teller and she built the story heading in one direction and then had a surprise finish. Quick read.
Nice fast paced read thru a good plot. Barton did not add anything unnecessary to moving the story along which I appreciated. The alternating and at times unreliable POV was handled nicely.
The subject of Physics causes brain freeze in most people, including me. However, this book is accessible! (Though at times a bit deep) It will open you up to thoughts you normally wouldn't think about. It is an amazing world we live in and this book helps to understand it.
An inside look at one of the worlds most fascinating innovators. I didn't realize just how forward thinking Musk is, of course, as the book reveals he can be ‘awkward' and downright mean. I liked the way the author told the story and look forward to seeing what Musk's next big idea is. It also reinforces the idea to Dream Big.
May not be Grisham's best but I liked it over the last couple I read. Quick paced, multi-plotted story told in first person. I did feel that there was a bit too much telling rather than showing though.
The Hanging Girl is the latest in the Department Q series by Denmark's best selling author, Jussi Adler-Olsen. The story opens with Detective Carl Morck and his two assistants being asked to investigate a twenty year old death. The petitioner, a policeman as well, had obsessed over the case for 20 years, unable to prove that the official hit and run determination was wrong. Plates already full, lead detective Morck, declines to take up the old case.
However, a reversal takes place when the petitioner kills himself at his own retirement party and they are drawn into the case. Morck is reluctant but his assistants are intrigued as they take the case over.
The trio investigate and follow leads all over Bornholm Island as Adler-Olsen separately introduces an esoteric group of higher conscious seekers. The group is lead by a charismatic man who runs an enlightenment center for money with the added benefit of providing him with a steady diet of woman. The reader begins to assume that a jealous follower, who eliminates her romantic competition, may be the murderer of the beautiful girl found hanging but the author deploys several twists before the killer is revealed.
The setting for the Hanging Girl is accomplished in a skillful way, as Bornholm Island, seemingly an idyllic island which tourist's overrun, is instead, revealed through encounters, to be a cold distant place whose inhabitants wear chips on their shoulders and are frankly a bit weird.
Carl, Rose and Assad are believable law enforcement partners whose interactions serve to strengthen their characters. Their relationships are well formed and represent the reality of professionals who must work together despite their differences.
Despite the craft exhibited at times, I didn't enjoy the read as I felt it was terminally slow moving and went on for far too long. It was too wordy and some of the dialogue was unbelievable and immature for such an accomplished author.

Latest release - Am I the Killer?
Hesitated with only a 3 star rating for Price's new novel but it was just too slowly paced. It also seems like a bunch of individual stories. I also felt, though at times he nailed it, that he over dis-functionalized (if that's a word) a NYC detective's existence.
No shortage of twists and turns in this story! A strong voiced, unpredictable protagonist tells her life story and all its ups and downs.
A good début for sure. Interesting, if at times, over done characters and nice setting detail. Enjoyed the read and was anxious to find out what would happen.
A captivating read. could not wait to see what happened to both the kid and the Judge. He paints a very real picture and the courtroom/legal detail was perfect and realistic. My only complaint was that the opening ‘chapter' was much too long and way too much backstory before the real story begins in part two.
A quick read that follows a couple of newly minted police officers. The officer's fears and needs clash with the realities of the ‘street' and they ‘evolve'.
Interesting if different type of book. It explores intelligence, emotion, seriousness, purpose and coming of age. May not be everyone
An ‘insiders' account of how decadent and violent the times were. Claudius, whose lineage provided an interesting vantage point, narrates and illuminates the privilege and precariousness of the ruling class.
Re-read this classic examination of death and dying. A reflective read sure to cause some to reassess.
Enjoyed the book. Good plot and sub-plotting but a lot of detail was unnecessary and bogged down the read somewhat.
Went in wanting to like it. I loved the premise but it just didn't deliver. Character developement was pretty good but pace too slow and the seeming effort to tie up all the loose ends in the trilogy weighed the book down
A good read but way too long. The plot was simply brilliant. The two story lines, one of his struggle to survive until a mission could be launched to rescue him and NASA back on Earth trying to come up with way to grab him before his food supply ran out, were simple on the surface but provide an endless stream of obstacles for both to overcome. My complaint was they went on too long and the last one really stretched thing.
Good fictionalization of an amazing story. Set mainly in Paris, the author reveals a startling story of the framing of Dreyfus and the staunch defense those who perpetuated the travesty. Its yet more proof of how institutions, in this case the French Army, circle the wagons to defend themselves.
Decided to try this book based upon a reviewers description it was “Grisham like”. The book, an impressive achievement for a debut by Glenn Ogura, was a fast enjoyable read. The author seems to have the insight/background in the tech field and brought the business environment in Silicon Valley to light without technical terms etc. He showed good skill at character development and the story before the surprising ending, was very believable. Bravo!
Good plot with many twists and turns but a laborious read. Too much backstory that failed to move the plot forward. Tangential discourse is the order of the day. A redemptive ending helped to soften it.
The best in the Sean Duffy series yet! Many twists and turns and it was totally engrossing! Can't wait for the next one.
