Amos was mean and the benevolent Benjamin Franklin was portrayed as a dolt. Even my kids were unanomoured with this one. We own a vintage copy of this one with a blah cover with an ugly rat looking mouse.
We read Lulu and the Dog by the Sea first, as it was the one that introduced me to Lulu and was recommended by Sonlight Curriculum K 2020 as a read-aloud. We just had to go back and start at the beginning at the end of that fun journey. “Lulu and the Duck in the Park” is not as great, but it is still a pretty fun story and adventure for two little girls and their school field trips/nature walks. Lulu and Mellie are such a fun pair and I believe my children will make me read them all, from the toddler to the twelve-year-old, they all love her.
We read this as a Kindle Unlimited copy, as I type this review, it is no longer available as such.
Oh! the horror in reading this book aloud to my children! Bullying! Danger! Getting lost and abandoned! Bad guys! Be still my anxiety-prone mother's heart... This was such an adventurous read for us all and there was so much to be had in giggles and conversation as the small nerdy girl saved the rest again, and again. We finished this book with a sigh that it had to end, purchased the next one in the series, and swore to track down and read Shiloh and anything else, like Alice, that we can find from Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/storytime/When AppleBlossom was born my brother gave us a gift set that included a cup and bib with the illustrations from Guess How Much I Love You on it. We later bought ourselves the board book and read it often. My brother had two older children and one on the way a little younger than AppleBlossom and he told me this was one of his favorites. This is an excellent book! There is a full verbose text, conversation bubbles, and vibrantly detailed illustrations. There is so much information to be absorbed and devil's advocate for both sides of the debate. There was no good side vs. the bad side, but the good and evil in two men of the same name and the peoples that followed them. We read this on the recommendation of Sonlight Curriculum Kindergarten (2020) Exploring American History and while we read it faster than the schedule suggested, I do suggest you take more than a day or two to read it because there is so much information. I especially enjoyed as I was reading that even my oldest student (11.5 working through Introduction to American History part 1) was able to recognize the history repeats itself and relate these acts and moments of the Revolutionary War to the modern era and said without skipping a beat, well that sounds like Ant!fa tactics... Imagine a band of renegades dressing up as Patriots and causing destruction to cause blame in the wrong place. I own a copy of this book.
We finished reading this Landmark book aloud today, The Lewis and Clark Expedition from Avyx, a Sonlight and BookShark Reading with History recommendation for Introduction to American Studies part 1. We personally spent about two months on this read and every time they were asking for more and to keep on going so today we pushed through to the end with three or more chapters on our to-do list. So far, from what I can tell I am really enjoying the quality of Landmark books and I'm grateful for publishers like Avyx (Sonlight) bringing them back occasionally for us. Reading this brought back memories of a field trip to the Discovery Museum when they had an outdoor live exhibit and reenactment of the Lewis and Clark corps. It also brings back to mind the Vieux Quebecois Musee we stumbled upon during our honeymoon that included Lewis and Clark artifacts. The off-roading, Overlanding, 4Runner driving mama in me wants to plan a road trip. Perhaps when the baby is a little less anti-car-seat, and when/if the world is calmer.
We own this book as purchased second-hand from a mama who bought it directly from BookShark for use with BookShark Reading with History Level 3, now known as Level 3 as in Sonlight Curriculum Core D Introduction to American History, part 1.
I know that I have a picture book by the same name and for years I would confuse them, this is the first time I have ever actually read this little chapter book. We sat down to read a little bit and my son (Rascal 6.5) kept asking for more and more until we had read the entire little book in one sitting. This was a great follow-up to our adventures in exploring China that we have started with Beautiful Feet Books Around the World in Picture Books, Part 1. We read this on the recommendations of Sonlight Curriculum Kindergarten 2020 Exploring American History. No, this is not American History, but it is the perfect age to read and experience. It is also on several other reading lists I follow. It was moved from Sonlight A to Sonlight Kindergarten in 2020. We own a paperback copy.
For the last several months, my children and I have been immersed in the adventures of Mr. Bowditch from boyhood to respected manhood. I love the person that he is and the example that he creates. For months, I have seen other parents talk about how sad this book is, but we never felt that. Yes, people die, it was a historical time of short lifespans and dangerous professions and disease, but there is so much hope. There is joy in the small places and such intelligence to share with anyone with an ear willing to hear. I really enjoyed this book and my children loved the adventure as well. I'm wondering now if we should travel off on other journeys by boat and ship or continue along our merry historical way. There was definitely a fire of creativity lit with this novel for us all.
I own a nice classic paperback copy of this book which we read along in the schedule from BookShark Reading with History, Level 3, now known as Core D Introduction to American History part 1.
I stumbled across this one while reading a “Memorial Day” book by [a:Eve Bunting 19126 Eve Bunting https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1261108322p2/19126.jpg] and at a glance, I think this might be another one. This is by Eve Bunting, but this book is about family and parenting. I read this book on a Kindle 10” Fire using Amazon Kids+ (formerly known as Kindle Freetime Unlimited). This is a picture book that is formatted horribly for Kindle. It has the original picture book images and duplicated the text to a size that is readable. I find this formatting to be very choppy and almost not worth it to experience reading in this manner. This is one that is heart-touching where a girl who has lost her mother to death is adjusting to a new wife for her father and memories both hard and good. There is room for new memories and getting to that point is the main purpose of this story. I can see this being a good one to explain many feelings to children that may not quite understand.
Here is another one that I found recommended on the Beautiful Feet Books Memorial Day Pack and was available on Kindle Freetime Unlimited (also known as Amazon Kids+). I have seen this book in the past as a recommended read and at a glance, I always assumed it was an [a:Allen Say 121814 Allen Say https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1365480667p2/121814.jpg] picture book, but I was mistaken as it is a classic [a:Eve Bunting 19126 Eve Bunting https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1261108322p2/19126.jpg] story with [a:Ronald Himler 41505 Ronald Himler https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1314391908p2/41505.jpg] illustrations. It is no wonder that it is a Reading Rainbow choice as Eve Bunting always tells a good and important tale. When I was a child, it seemed everyone would be able to one day visit Washington D.C. and memorials such as the Vietnam Wall Memorial, however, as my own children begin to reach the age of when I first visited, I realize that may not be an option for them. This book is a good field trip between the pages and is fairly accurate to the feelings of visiting the wall. My father made it back as did my uncles and others that I know but others they knew did not from their own wartime services. As I remember it, the wall was cold to the touch, but perhaps I visited early in the morning before the sun had time to warm it to the touch. But overall, the is right on key for remembering and experiencing such an important and historical site. I read this through a borrowed Kindle eBook, but would gladly add a physical book to my shelf even though the Kids+ version is made well. 4/16/2021 - Switch to paperback, I bought a ThriftBooks pb copy.
I'm looking and pre-reading books recommended by Beautiful Feet Books Memorial Day Pack and found this one available through Kindle Unlimited (not Kindle Freetime Unlimited). I read it through the Kindle Cloud Reader in my browser. Through the whole thing, I only noticed a handful of pictures/illustrations, so I cannot really comment on those very much, I felt that there should have been more and I'm curious if in the picture book version there would be more than what was in the Kindle eBook. The words, however, are the real gem for this picture book. This is a great way to open discussion and explain Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and in general the concept of MIA/POW (missing in action/prisoner of war). I think that the text in this book is very well done and if there were more images, it would receive a full five stars from me. I do not currently own a copy of this book, but will eagerly look for one to add to our shelves, preferably physical.
4/16/2021 - I own a jacketed hardcover from ThriftBooks.
I have spent today, Good Friday (2021), coughing from allergies and drainage, attempting to start a new cross stitch project, mothering allergy cranky babes, and listening to Sense and Sensibility—narrated by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, occasionally bookmarking myself with [b:Sense and Sensibility 20960708 Sense and Sensibility Jane Austen https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1393893711l/20960708.SY75.jpg 2809709]. I've read it before I'm sure, I have read the main books, as well as seen film renditions a million times. I never realized before just how many of the storylines overlapped with a similarity. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is an excellent narrator and I could listen to her tell a story all day, and apparently, I now have. Currently at 82% read of Sense & Sensibility. I own individual books, Kindle eBooks, and treasury editions of Jane Austen. I'm listening to [b:The Jane Austen Collection: An Audible Original Drama 55873397 The Jane Austen Collection An Audible Original Drama Jane Austen https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1605581936l/55873397.SX50.jpg 87088353] through Audible in the Audible + Catalog.
We listened to this in The Jane Austen Collection in full today and plan to catch a Britbox drama later. Will update my review/thoughts when Goodreads starts behaving again. This is my first experience with Violet Mackerel, I came across Violet Mackerel's Personal Space when it was first released into my world of digital eARC books but it never crossed my read to be read and reviewed. It wasn't until Violet Mackerel and the Brilliant Plot but my wishlist that I stumbled back upon this little eARC. It was a short and sweet read covering a wealth of emotions in little people. In the end I think Violet is with a revisit.
