I wanted to find a light book to read at work in downtime, one I wouldn't have to pay too much attention to or think about too much. I will say by the time I was almost finished this book I was about to give up. some parts of it were genuinely funny. At times I really liked the main character and thought she was hilarious.
But...
I honestly wanted to strangle pretty much every character. Emma was funny sometimes but insecure, naive, immature, and just completely stupid at times. Her roomates (mainly Jemima) made me want to rip the book apart (I guess it's good that I had it on Kindle and not paper). I wanted to like Jack but he was basically a cardboard cutout. No substance. Nothing. He literally could have been a cardboard cutout that Emma carried around everywhere, and I might have found the story more interesting.
I am sorry I didn't enjoy this book. I wanted to like it. But it was like Bridget Jones with even more crazy drama and less enjoyable characters.
I find it as hard to review this as it is to say goodbye to this series after 7 books. I feel like there's just so much to say, but I want to keep this brief. I've definitely had my issues with this series, because the main character at times annoyed the hell out of me and the writing style often bothers me, but... SJ Maas sure does know how to hold my attention. The drama, the romance, the epic battles...I can't say no to her. So I'll eagerly await her next series, and until then I'll try to fill the void this book left with something new.
I'm just gonna keep reading books by this author until this stressful time in my life let's up and things go back to normal. They're a good distraction and I really enjoyed this one for the most part. The ending had me on edge but I'm happy with how they ended the story.
How did it take me this long to write a review for this? Maybe I couldn't find the right words to describe the feeling that this series gives me. I had my ups and downs with this particular book but overall this series remains at the top of my list. The mix of new characters in with my old loves was refreshing. Just a bloodydamm good book, brutal and exhilarating to the end.
I read this last year, but I wanted to refresh my memory before starting a Court of Wings and Ruin, so I read it again. I remembered loving this book but I think I loved it even more the second time. I also remembered hating Tamlin so much the last time I read it...and this time I hated him even more. My only regret with this book is that it makes me annoyed with myself for thinking Tamlin was so great on the first book, when he's really such an assclown.
Destroyed. It's going to take a while to recover from this one. Watched The Untamed and the Donghua...now what?
I. Am. A. Mess.
Happy crying. I just...I just love these characters so much. All I ever wanted was for them to be happy and together and in love and here it is. I'm so glad I got to spend even a few more pages with them. ❤️
Damn this book was awesome. Not only was it physically gorgeous (cover art swoon) but it was such a rich and original story. It was really unlike any other fantasy book I've ever read, and I loved how the stories of the characters wove together to create a truly intricate and captivating tale. Can't wait for the next book.
Really enjoyed this book. I loved the banter between the main characters, the wit and sarcasm made their interactions both cute and funny. Definitely want to read more from this author.
hyperventilates I. loved. it. so. much. I love this series. I loved this book. I can't wait for the next one. Sarah J. Maas just take all my money. please. I want you to have it. just keep writing these books.
I want to rate this more than 5 stars. Where are the extra stars, Goodreads? I demand extra stars!
I want to tell everyone I know to read this book. The writing was flawless, the characters were well developed, and I absolutely loved them all. The friendship, love, laughter, heartache, tears... All of it just hit me so hard but I love the feeling that this book left me with.
