To be honest I don't really like this author, I'm pretty sure I won't be picking up any more after this one. I picked this one up because it's an MM romance and I love those.
This just fell flat for me. I see that there was a lot of effort to try to add dimension to the characters, but it just didn't work for me. Sculpting, violin, track and heavy backstory felt like too many personality traits for one character.
I did find a few plot holes here and there, like how Carrie's character was so badly developed throughout the book, sometimes she is treated like a 5 year old (oh no Carrie, we both were just WRESTLING and totally not making out) and then I find out she's 16?! and also the whole mystery that was trying to be developed, I just don't understand why Alis just assumes this anonymous phone number to be Canny, when there are clearly other scenes where they do text each other
There was low angst, their relationship develops quite messily but I can understand how some people prefer it to be that way for their reading experience. Just not my personal taste.
What I hated most about this was the same recycled plot of daddy issues, and drug addiction, and then the daddy coming in to kidnap him, I feel like I'm seeing this in ever single popular movie and book these days
Also im pretty uncomfortable with the mental health representation of Canyon's mother and everyone just assuming she has depression and basically neglecting her.
This is definitely a purely personal opinion, but this book felt incredibly YA, i wish I'd known that before I picked it up.
Small town, a group of people get together to stop the havoc. Underwhelming ending, and doesn't make much sense overall.
I mostly read adult thrillers, so this just wasn't well suited for me.
I enjoyed this book for what it is, a short and sweet romance with low angst and lovable characters.
Is this the greatest work of literature? No. But it did bring me out of my slump and so it served its purpose for me.
Oh my god.
This was so amazing.
I just finished reading this and I literally have goosebumps. Wow.
I was so immersed into the story, it really took me there. The courtroom thriller setting, all the commentary, and the running plot, it was amazing.
Zara's character was the highlight of the book for me. She was always the bigger person, even during the hardest times, she just keeps going, but also we see her break down a few times, rendering her a human with flaws.
I will definitely be thinking about this for a while.
After reading ‘for the fans', I knew I wanted more from this author, and there was nothing more in this world that I wanted more than a gay incestuous threesome. And this DELIVERED.
I love how contrasting each character is but deep down they're all basically the same as in they're all seeking each other's love. I love Cyrus, his introvert nature written so well and how he denies the relationship with his twin brother every step of the way. I'm talking if you want TABOO, you get the TABOO.
And Colson, he's such a sweetheart deep down. Tauren had a very strong saviour complex, and some unresolved issues, but he was overall a very likeable character.
The sex?! Fantastic. I don't know how to explain it, but these scenes are just different. They felt very unique and unlike any other gay romance I've read. It was INCREDIBLY steamy, (in the words of Colson, so hot my clothes melt off of me) but it also has a surprisingly strong plot going on too. It goes fairly deeply addressing the twins' trauma dealing with their parents, and also the ‘coming out as gay' experience for the both of them.
I love this book a lot already, and I'm gonna wait for a while to see how well these characters reside in me, and if they feel very memorable I will definitely give this a 5 stars.
Amazing book!!!!
I LOVE the friends to lovers trope, the way they are already so familiar with each other and the comfort they mutually build over years that sizzles into something hotter eventually.
This book was no different. I loved Aspen and Keene's friendship and the romance was so good. C E Ricci doesn't disappoint, brought me out of my slump.
My favourite part was probably the way they give each other sexy dares that was so fun
Knocked down 0.5 stars for the third act breakup/misunderstanding, do we really have to? Especially for this story with such a strong romance already built, it was ready to end in my opinion.
Also loved the crossover with Head Above Water, albeit very tiny.
I loved how easy this was to read.
What I was not expecting to love is the setting. This is set in the early 1900s with fantastical elements, and that's not something I would usually enjoy but i actually loved the atmosphere.
I loved Iris. She was such a nice character and I was rooting for her all the way.
Enjoyed this book, although it did wane off at the ending for me maybe, but my opinion could change after the next book comes out.
I just finished this and the only thought in my mind is “what the fuck did I just read?!”
This was such a ride, much more so than any other Nyla K books I've read.
I'm not sure how I feel about this particular type of plot twist, and i definitely think a reread would help to sort out the confusion I have right now regarding a lot of the story. Maybe when i reread this I'll realise the story is actually incredibly clever, I don't know.
What I do know is that this did a great job of immersing me into this world, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Especially Luth and Ren's story, I love them so muchh
I loved this!
The premise is so interesting and so fun, it was hilarious to watch these 2 dudes who can't stand each other irl but jerk off to each other's dick pics online.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
It's cute, it's hot, it's funny, it's gay. What more do you want?
I was a monster, I realised, by choice.
This was a fast paced, addicting, compelling book that I could not keep my hands off of. The rage is so raw and unfiltered. The romance was so hot. The revenge was so satisfying.
The only issue I had is with the way the feminist commentary was delivered. I would say this is very loosely based on Medusa's story. The commentary was too... In your face? I feel like i would've appreciated more subtlety. Some of the characters were comically misogynist, especially for a college setting with adults. I don't know if that's what the author was going for, but i feel like this book would have hit harder if the misogyny and the victim shaming were done in a way that i could relate to in real life.
Also this is just me but LEX AND LUX? Like?!?!
I think it's supposed to be cute but it was kind of annoying to me tbh
Overall it's a fun book, worth the time. Not perfect, but fun.
It was the deranged gore I was looking for and this book definitely delivered. Very dark, very disgusting stories.
Especially the last 2, they really stepped it up, and the artworks accompanying the story made the experience so much better.
This would definitely be one of my top recommendations if you're are a fellow extreme horror reader.
If gothikana and the L.O.R.D.S series had a gay baby
5/5 gothic boarding school atmosphere
5/5 spice, sometimes overrides plot but hey I'm not complaining ;)
5/5 sexy french snobs
Felt a little bit insta love but otherwise amazing read. Can't wait for the whole series to come out!
For me, plotless stories are always a hit or miss, but with Dennis Cooper, something about the scene he sets up, the characters involved, always makes me so fascinated.
This is a type of horror that I've really come to enjoy. Slow, disturbing, and you're wondering where the hell it's headed. The characters all come from difficult backgrounds, and are very detached, if I can say that.
I understand this book isn't for everyone but it terrifies me and I love it.
I loved this book! I felt like I had an immediate connection with the characters, especially Holden was such a fun character to follow, and their tension was amazingly well built.
This is a best friend's crush romance, so obviously I can see why that wouldn't work for some people but i could definitely overlook some of the social ethics for the sake of fiction. I can't say I agree with the decisions Phoenix makes, but I still enjoyed this book overall.
Can't wait to read the next books in the series, especially Kasen he deserves so much
This was BEAUTIFUL.
SO BEAUTIFUL.
LUSH. EXQUISITE WRITING.
My favourite part about this book is how much Elio longs for Oliver. Just, burning, intense, desire, so raw, so fresh. Unbelievably beautiful.
This is definitely an all time favourite book for me, because the way they characters are built, and the direction this took, and the writing obviously makes it so perfect and unlike anything else I've ever read.
5 stars.
The orange was a poem I randomly came across and loved so I decided to read the whole collection that it's from.
I liked a few others, but overall it was just okay. Some were funny, others cute. The number of ones about alcoholism was a little bit alarming ngl.
Even though the content matter is dark, you know, since the protagonists are serial killers, this book still read like a sweet romcom to me, idk why just the vibes.
Rowan was such a fun character to read about and him giving her absolute ✨princess treatment✨
Also I was not expecting Rowan to be so feisty goddamn
Blew my socks off with how much there was beneath the story on the surface.
Again, it's ambiguous and up for personal interpretation so if you're not into that, and magical realism, this one isn't for you.
Very weird, yet brilliantly well written. Had me thinking about it for weeks later.
Definitely not for everyone, but worth a shot.
I loved it.
Enjoyed the witchy shit! Makes no sense but I love the wild ride it's taking me on, so invested
Don't mind me reviewing my first omegaverse read, one thing is for sure, I'm not looking back.
This book was so unserious and self aware and constantly made fun of itself, I LOVED IT. This is exactly what I needed right now.
The banter! There was more build up than I was expecting, I was actually laughing out loud into my screen all alone in my room. I haven't had this much fun with a book in a long time!
Probably unrelated to this book, but looking into some of the omega and alpha anatomy as a med student was the highlight of my day today.
This was a heavy read for me, and knowing that this is based on real life events just felt like a bottomless pit in my stomach the whole time.
I love the feminist commentary, the fact that he is never named, and the beautiful way the book portrays the victims, because they were humans with complete lives too, not just numbers on a board.
Also wonderful commentary about the incompetence of the legal system, sensationalisation of serial killings by the media, and the absolute trauma of having to live through your terrible experience over and over again.
I liked this one substantially more than the previous installment of this series. there was an epic slowburn that led to the spiciness, and i loved all the references to popular serial killers, you can tell the author had a ton of fun with this one.
I didn't necessarily like Felix's or Lem's character, i didn't agree with a lot of things they were saying but i think that is the point, these characters, Felix especially is literally a serial killer.
Can't wait for Luth and Ren's book!
I swallow her as if she were a sword, little by little and with enormous care
Beautiful writing. Heavy with themes of motherhood and growing out of a relationship, but also funny sometimes.
Nice little novella for those in the mood for a toxic literary sapphic story.
How many centuries have to pass before a woman can give birth without it looking like an experiment?
