Most of the other reviews here have already stolen the words I would have used, but I do want to reinforce the fact that this is a great book, and I'm actually upset with myself that I waited this long to read it. I love well thought out magic systems, and this is a perfect example. King Henry himself is one of the more entertaining “heroes” I've ever encountered. And I'm a bit of a foul mouth myself, so what's not to love?!
Anyway, I loved this book, but yeah, you had better know before you start that “foul mouth” really means foul mouth. If you don't want to read that kind of language don't pick up this book.
Now off to book 2!
2.5/5
Not bad, but nothing I haven't read before except for the memes. If you've read Defiance of the Fall or Primal Hunter you have seen everything this book has to offer, this is just less of those. And I started book 2 and after about 15% I realized I didn't care about any of it, so that's enough of this series for me I think.
For a short story, Split gets a lot done. The main character, Erika, immediately becomes familiar and comfortable. As the introduction to another character in the Eternal War (begun in Spiral X), it accomplishes its purpose of making me want to find out more about her while still giving me a distinct and satisfying story in its own right. Don't let the fact it is only 15,000 words fool you, this is a meaty story and well worth your time.
